Whats It Mean To Be A Raven

17 posts in this topic

guys with the recent WR controversy I see one thing brought up a lot and I mean A LOT we need to stop as fans and think whats it really mean for us to want a player to suit up under our colors, do we want some one who is going to make negative headlines time and time again but get us super bowls, do we mind a mediocre player in place of the prior spoken if he will try to perform and fits well in the program where outside he was poor he is now a valued asset cause of something he brings unique that other teams didn't see. Guess what I am hinting at is do we want to see our expectations of a player on the field override our good conscience off the field , do we want to be a cowboys or a Bengals where we hirer out of desperation some one we know is going to fail please remember we tried in the 90's that same thing by hirering Bam Morris he was later bust a 3rd and 4th time with cocaine in his system , also what would you expect if you had ozzies job a player you dont know if he will make through the season with out drawing negative headlines or one that will only draw those type from a bad game as apose to red and blue lights?

Well you said "make negative headlines time and time again but get us super bowls". Think that answers it right there. You play to win the game.

As far as it goes, I don't think we ever 'go after' mediocre players. Otherwise, players with negative history depends on if it really represents 'long running problems' or something rare.

I don't think off field distractions are good for team chemistry.

Depending on the player and how many times they have gotten in trouble and if I think there can be a change. In desperation to win many things can happen. But a lot of times greed doesn't pay off. I don't mind players that get in trouble (such as Jamal Lewis who made a stupid mistake when he was 19 but didn't repeat the offense and learned from his lesson). Repeating offenders don't just change. Maybe I'm just a cynical person and don't think people can change but that is just me

this was what I was talking about , we had 2 players that got in trouble one not only learned his lesson but he is now on his way to retiring a raven. tell me why we fans should pay a penalty , the penalty of shame in our teams off field behavior . anything DUI to domestic violence , if you got kids you understand , I will one day tell my daughter about what happened with Ray Lewis and why he turned his life arround , he is a true lesson learned . from shame to mvp people said he didnt deserve it now he has the RLF that helps needy family and kids of DV Homes. what it truly means to be a Raven is to represent an orginization of integrity , reason bart scott was let walk in my opinion was his anger issue , he started to lose control case in point our third game against pittsburg he nearly got in 2 fist fights during a defensive series, does this fit a raven on the field no, bam morris was let go in 1998 why because of off the field antics involving cocain. once again did he fit us off the field no. the point is integrety is key, you want a hienze ward fine you build a team you sign people of his mold on the field cheapshot artists , you want chris henry ok go to betty ford and pick one up but please as a Raven Fan with a child I want to see a team with integrity so my daughter doesnt ask daddy if its ok fo him to do illegal things then can I.

Men that represent themselves well in their personal life, I think, will be more apt to be team players and be less distracted and not cause a distraction to the team. If a guy is thinking about his next fix, or drink, or court date he may not give it his all.

Oh, I know for a fact that repeat offenders can change very quickly, if given the proper motivation.
Therein lies the problem.....finding the proper motivation.

I agree with all you said except I'm a little less cynical - I think sometimes repeat offenders can change. Unfortunately, it is hard to determine when they will decide to do that, and if it will "stick", so it's tricky knowing when to trust them.

I understand what this poster is writing. I agree off field distractions can seriously ruin a teams unity. Oz does a fantastic job selecting people that are high in character and low on controversy. Besides the Ray Lewis debacle, what can any opposing team fan mock the Ravens for? We've been to the show too. I think it's possible to find high caliber athletes that have good morals as well. We do it year after year.

its disappointing that this even needs to be discussed. But it does...

I didnt want to have to start this topic but the many marshall threads made me think we needed to discus this with the younger fans seeming to not understand my position , I am glad some one does and understands why I did it.

Stuff like sportmansship and fair play is hokey to some people, but it makes sense to me.
It can even win games!
Build a strong, moral team based on virtues and you will have a proud city, win or lose, and maybe a superbowl victory too.
The older I get, the smarter my father was.
