This deal had to get done, but at what cost? So much for building around the true centerpiece of our franchise (Joe Flacco)
Who did they just draft in April? Well, gosh dang, look at that; someone to keep him on his feet. There are are more ways to ensure a QBs success than one.

And what were the Ravens supposed to do about Mason anyways?

Flacco is under contract for years! After Flacco, who are this team's most important players, for now and the future? That would be Suggs, Ngata, and Gaither out of the guys who need to get a long term deal done.
This was an extremely important resigning. Do not under estimate what Suggs means to this team.

What are you talking about? Oher, Gaithers, Rice, Marcus Smith is developing. Our o line is set and running backs are set with young talent. Some people will never be satisfied until we get a big name. I'm glad we need to be like the cowboys

I just came back from summer school, when ESPN was on right before commercial break. They were saying that coming up was news on Signing Franchise Extensions. I was like "Damn...... I'm depressed." And when they talked about Suggz, I was like "HOLY $#!%!!!!"

With this move, we can be assured Ngata will be getting the Franchise Tag in the upcoming offseason.

And to the person who said "way to give Suggs money instead of building around the true center of the franchise... Joe Flacco" you're an idiot! Who was the Ravens number one pick this year? A TACKLE! AN OFFENSIVE TACKLE. And since you don't seem to know much about football... a offensive tackle plays on the offensive line. He protects the quarterback. Joe Flacco is the quarterback. So that means, the offensive tackle protects Joe Flacco. In case you still can't figure it out, what the Ravens did with that draft pick... is build around Joe Flacco. Even though the offensive line was not the problem at all last year... they still went ahead and got another guy to plug in. Oh, also... they got Matt Birk. He will be a HUGE upgrade in calling out blocking assignments and picking up what the defense is wanting to do. Brown was younger, but Birk is a much better center. The running game should see huge improvement, which is scary because they were already great. Let's just hope everyone stays healthy!

Funny rant. :) I enjoyed reading that. I don't know if Birk is that much more of a improvement over Brown. Brown is very good. Birk's age will start to affect him, but centers don't age as fast

Thank goodnes he signed so we can just MOVE on folks. Now we will be bowl winners for sure right ? Now back to the real concerns of no receiver, no proven field goal kicker and Leaning our hopes on the Mcgahee, Rice tandem. Not to mention the hopes of Heap returning to form. I love the ravens and i am an avid defender to all comers at work but sometimes we get stuck on the wrong things.

I think we should have brabbed a receiver in the drafts 1st round and or gave Mase the extension when he asked for it. All eyes were on suggs and now where are we ?

here goes
says the compromise between the two got the deal done.
to be the highest paid guy it was a shock it wasn't as high as he was gunning for he just wanted a fair salary for basically cover 2 positions
second only to peyton manning in bonus money said it is flattering and makes jokes that he has never sacked peyton almost but not yet
didn't mind franchise tag because it kept him a raven...said he isn't greedy...he wanted a long term deal and he is glad the deal is done...talking while dropping kids off at school doing his daddy duties lol

Suggs puts the deal down to compromise - wanting to stay and the Ravens wanting to keep him.

Suggs is "shocked" to become the highest paid LB in the league - was not his aim, "wanted a fair deal".

Flattered at being 2nd to Peyton on the $33 million next 2 seasons.

Suggs didn't mind franchise tag because he could remain a Raven, "wants to play in purple and black" - tag kept him here, "happy to have the deal done."

He's dropping his kids off at school also. Lol
Thanks, guys! Suggs sounds like a great guy to have on the team!

Ozzie did well in the sense that he managed to get him signed for less than 70 mil. because he wanted more than that. But he still overpaid. This was out of desperation because pryce is close to retiring, kruger is unproven, and the deadline. It was definitely the right player, but not the right price. At least when we were paying guys like Ray Lewis, we knew we were paying a guy who not only brought numbers but made everyone else better around him. Suggs is a guy that plays well when the guys around him make him better, but he can't do it on his own, nor does he really make anyone else better, and if the defense is playing bad - suggs will play bad. You don't pay a guy like that. Trading for a high priced WR isn't really a question anymore now, now the question is how we are going to lock up Gaither and Ngata. We can't pay everyone, and ozzie decided who was most important today unless he plans to trade him. We have the highest paid OLB but couldn't generate a pass rush last year... GREAT.

What is your proof that he doesn't make anyone better? That's a statement that you could say about anyone but doesn't need any proof to back it up. And when our defense plays bad, the whole defense plays bad, not just Suggs, so what are you getting at with that point?

In the AFC championship game when we weren't getting that much pressure on the QB, Suggs got two sacks with a seperated shoulder (which everyone gave Mason credit for playing with one shoulder but Suggs doesnt get that much credit for it). Those sacks were huge in that game. He is a playmaker and a unique player. You can't find those kind of players anywhere. He isn't a product of the system and he is one of the most important players of our defense. He creates an element of versitility for our defense.

Good job, Suggs and Ozzie.

I think 63 mil is very fair on both parties.

I do kind of speculate that maybe the reason they waited til the last day of eligibility of a contract was not exactly shopping Suggs but maybe to generate interest on him from other teams to either gauge how much to give him or to gauge what they could get for Suggs. Either way it seems like it was the FO that was holding out and not sizzle

I have a dream. I have a dream that one day, Shawne Merriman will return HOME to don the purple-and-black, just like his former teammate Domonique Foxworth. And one day, "Lights Out" and T-Sizzle will work in tandem to produce the greatest double-team sack EVER on a quarterback. And on that day, the clouds will part, the skies will turn blue, the heavens will echo, and a man's brain will be scrambled. And then, and only then, will tears of joy stream down my eyes as I scream at the top of my lungs until a vein pops, leaving me with a mini-seizure and the happiest feeling I've ever felt in my life.

(In other words, I hope Shawne Merriman eventually comes to Baltimore as a free agent at a reasonable price to team with Terrell Suggs.)
As long as we're making wishes, I would ask for the Ravens to sign Cal Ripken, Eddie Murray, Artie Donovan, Lenny Moore, and throw them all in on a statue of liberty play in the Super Bowl where Donovan trucks a fur coat laden, distracted-by-Suzy-Kolber Joe Namath and piledrives him into the endzone for the victory, on top of a whining Frank Gifford.

Thus, the dispute of Gifford's first down in "The Greatest Game" and the horror of Super Bowl III erased simultaneously.

Yes, for four more years, until 2013.

No worries there.

Great News, i was shocked when the number was 63. He really did take one for the team. I was expecting 70 mil or so, so this is great news for us

Lets start with Ngata and Gaither NOW as we dont want another Jason Brown on our hands do we

Now i know this is exciting for us but this is great news on so many levels
One - we get Terrell Suggs for a long time
two - If this is the deal Suggs got and Lamar Woodley keeps up his sack numbers the burgh wont be able to resign him. They have Starks(40), Roethlis(100) and Harrison (50) contracts and heaps of other key FA so this could mean that he might leave Pittsburgh.

Also Demarcus Ware is going to get an astronomical amount of coin lol

Great day!

If we could spend all this coin on Suggs, how come we couldn't spend some serious coin on a young Jason Brown who is supposed to be one of the best centers in the league? Now im not complaining about Birk (he's phenomenal), I'm just inquiring.

" Talks between the Ravens and Brown broke off Thursday night when he tried to get the team to move off their contract offer, which was in the $6 million range. Brown was hoping to land $7.5 million to $8 million a year in free agency."

we couldn't have paid a million more?

Worth every penny. Lets hope he stays healthy and hungery.

***some what off topic***

Its funny watching the posts around here. I would love to cross refrance who says what.

In the Masen thread it reads "Masen is retireing we are doomed for the season"

This thread reads "Suggs signed for six years we are going to the super bowl "

Not that I agree or disagree with either but it is kinda humorous...

$8 million a year for a center?? Hmm.. the deal he got from the Rams makes him the highest paid center ever, he gets $24 million guaranteed the next 2 years. Big money.

Sizzle is an extremely important part of this team. He is already in good shape from off season training, if he gets in a good training camp we can probably expect 80+ tackles and between 12-15 sacks from him. At least that's what I am hoping on.

We just need this team to be focused on staying healthy this season. These trainers need to get these guys on some injury preventive workout regimens.

Actually, I agree with his post. Birk has way more experience and will bring leadership to our young OLine. With the addition of Oher, Heap should be free from him blocking duties and contribute to the team as a TE, thank God. Hope he still has it in him to contribute

Great News!! Now we don't have to worry about Suggs hitting FA. I am so glad Ozzie made it priority # 1 to keep Suggs over Bart Scott and other Free Agency players. This is just one step made toward taking that elusive trip to Super Bowl 44 in Miami. Now let's use that extra cap money to lock in Jared Gaither, Ben Grubbs and other key players on this team so we don't have to worry about them hitting Free Agency in a uncapped year. Hopefully we can give Haloti Ngata a new contract as well.

We've got an extremally young offensive line and we can only spend so much on it. 8 million a year is guard money. If we would have given that to Jason eventually we would have lost Grubbs, Yanda, or Gaither to free agency.

Besides STL was tampering. His agent had the deal worked out with them before we even broke off negotiations. Raising the offer would have given crediability to the tampering that the Rams were doing. Exclusive negotiations means just that exclusive, we shouldnt have had to be in a bidding war before he was actually a free agent.
