Amani Toomer?

55 posts in this topic

I heard someone mention Amani Toomer on the radio.
He's younger than Derrick [well a year, but still]
He's 6'3

He would be here maybe a year or 2 before we get a wideout, why not?

Amani Toomer has been an underrated receiver, but I don't really think he would be an upgrade over Derrick at this point. Obviously, our options are limited. I never really buy into the hype that we are going to make a blockbuster trade, but this might be the time.

After Checking some stats, He is consistent.....consistently BAD,
he has not eclipsed 1000 yards since 03

and lately??
2008 48 Rec
2007 59 Rec
2006 32 Rec
2005 60 Rec

Well oh well, sorry for the false statement.
Besides a blockbuster trade, what are our options?
Plaxico? No.
If Toomer could stay healthy for a year, He'd be a decent replacement.

Stats mean diddly. He's been clutch in his career. "Lately", he has not been the Giants #1 WR, plus they had 3 other good options. He was there when they threw to him.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Girj2kUA1E8 at :35 what did we learn from this video

1. amani's got pin point accuracy
2. hes strong
3. he has no jump shot so he wont be leaving for the nba

hes got superbowl experience and a big target in the redzone
hes only had 3 seasons where he did not play all regular season games(one season was 15 games) harrison is 36 and the only highlight i remember of him in the 08 season was him burning chris mcalister

Yup, thewarden is trying to set us up! Nope! I'll take my chances with M. Smith and K. Washington.

Another speculation thread...

if we can't find something better to spend our money on why not bring in a Free Agent to bring depth where it is needed as a short term solution.

No.

Why not? I like Toomer for a one year fix. Experienced and solid. We don't need him to catch 80 balls. Just be a number 2 or 3.

Unfortunately, this is starting to look like a bad habit. Get a receiver when they are old and cheap. Opposite of our Defense, young and cheap. Some times we have prime and expensive not at receiver though.

everyone is talking about amani, maybe rightfully so, but he's not the only "proven" (or at least player w/ experience) thats still out there.. mostly, if not all would be short term fixes that dont have much more upside than some guys we already have, but it doesnt always hurt to bring in a vet that knows how to play the game

heres some:

Plaxico Burress
Marvin Harrison
Matt Jones
Jerry Porter (tried out, but coaches obviously see too much potential)
Marty Booker* (definately past his prime, but still has a couple years left in the tank)
Drew Bennett* (i think should get more attention barring injury recovery - had a 1200yd/11td year)
DJ Hackett
Dante Hall
Ike Hilliard* (only started 2 games and still managed close to 50 catches, but 33yo)
Sam Hurd* (played well in limited time in '07, didnt see the field in '08... young)
Darrell Jackson* (terrible last year, has had seasons w/ 877, 956, 1081, 1137, & 1199 yards)
Joe Jurevicius
Ashley Lelie* (hasnt hit 30 yet, already played for 4 NFL teams and has a 1000yd season under his belt)
Travis Taylor
Reggie Williams* (i still see potential after his 10 TD year in '07)

*denotes who i think could be at least a short term replacement at a decent cost

the first three bolded names would probably be a little more pricey, jones and plax w/ legal problems and harrison is far past his better years

Toomer is a good addition to a team who already has a true #1...look at his stats when asked to be a #1...when Plax wasn't in G land last season Toomer was asked to do more then he could and he didn't do it, he would be asked to do that here....NO THANK YOU.

Bring in Marshall..he fills the bill for years to come, not just 1 season

i definitely agree with the ideas for bringing in Reggie Williams and Darrell Jackson and CERTAINLY Amani Toomer. Jackson's 5 11, Toomer is 6 3 and Williams is 6 4 so they are all big targets. Id personally like to take a chance on Williams and see if our hard-nosed system could whip him into shape and finally meet and maybe exceed his potential. If the front office is thinking for immediate impact they'll probably take Toomer IMO

I wasn't saying bring in Toomer forever and he is the answer to all of the Ravens problems. But for a quick fix at depth he would be a good choice.

Unless something falls into our lap, I say we take a risk with the group of receivers we have now. It's not the quick fix that everyone wants, but who knows which one of the young guys may be able to step up. If, for instance, Marcus Smith can show the same kind of talent come gametime that we have seen in the offseason, this may be a great time for him to step up and start. We have a good number of young guys at receiver currently:

Clayton - 5 years
Figurs - 3
Harper - 2
Riley - R
Smith - 2
Washington - 7
Wheelwright - 1
Williams, E. - 1
Williams, D. - 4
Williams, I. - R

... I don't know. I'm really depressed about the whole Mason retiring thing :(

Toomer can bring in leadership but that's about it. The guy has nothing left, he can't even get a workout from other teams. At best he's a backup WR, there's no way he could replace Mason.

Unless we trade for Marshall/Boldin Williams should stay in the starting lineup. Marcus Smith could be a good #3.

Toomer would be a bigger Mason which is sadly better than anything the team has right now. He may be younger than Mason but he may not have the legs anymore. I'm sure the team will take a look at him in the coming weeks.
Reminds me of this one argument I had where someone was trying to tell me that our receiving corps was great with Randy Hymes, Clarence Moore, and Devard Darling.

With the exception of Darling, that group could make up their own reality show like "Where Are They Now?" -- at least Darling is still in the league.

I wouldn't necessarily agree with that - the guy is clutch on 3rd downs man... Look at some tape and see how many times Eli looked to him to convert 3rd dwns. Usually a short pass where Toomer was guaranteed to take a huge shot.
