Derrick Mason Retires!?

436 posts in this topic

OK, Ozzie... NOW it's time to get on the phone with Denver and get Marshall. Calling Rod Graves of the Cardinals wouldn't hurt either...

Oh, and sign T-Sizzle already. Sheesh.

I personally had to seek counciling after the passing of McNair...Imagine Mason who worked with him every single day...I honestly think that the Passing of McNair had a lot to do with the Stress and the idea of retiring at this time...

i hope this isnt true, if it is we are screwed.
We HAVE to make a play for someone now, Marvin Harrison, Amani Toomer, Marshall or Boldin

We will not make the playoffs with Clayton the 1 and Williams the 2, it wont happen
Good faith you have in your team....Do you think HInes Ward and Nate Washington are fantastic WR's?

C'mon man, with our new OL Flacco could make Figurs look good.

Dare I say, the 2009 Baltimore Ravens could be in trouble?
wile it is bad news, I think saying "we are in trouble" would be over stating things a bit.

Disagreeing with a course of action does not constitute panic.

You didn't need to see this particular event coming 3 months ago to know that we needed to add help to the receiver corps - if for no other reason than to relieve the pressure on Mason. I will say this again: Mason needed help. He got worked over last season. He got doubled. He came up lame and still kept going. He left it ALL out on the field.

How did they repay him for his sacrifice? No extension. No WR help. I don't expect Ozzie to predict the future, insofar as he is expected to know when people retire. But how do you not see that you're asking a man to do so much in return for so little?
I think you might be right about the contract thing being a slap in the face to him but I dont think he had a problem with his workload. He wanted to be the go to guy. I even remember him complaining about not getting enough looks after our loss to the Colts during the playoffs. He's competitive, I doubt that changed.

Anything else? lol

Siz needs to get signed because I don't want us to waste money on him this year from the tag when players who actually want to be here arent gettin thier contracts.

his legs r cooked his shoulder is gone n the only reason he caught so many balls is cuz joe threw to him 98% of the time and clayton could put up 100 catches n 10 TDs if joe throws him as many passes as he threw to D-Mase

To those saying, "Wait and be patient":

Training camp starts July 29th. I'll be happy to wait until then. See you in two weeks with one less Suggs and one less Mason.

how is that overstating it ? We got beat by the steelers 3 times last year. So losing mason makes us have better odds at beating them this year ? Thats confusing to say the least K-Dog

I wish i could keep hitting the +1 button because I totally agree. Joe Flex will grow with Clayton. I am just interested in if Williams or Marcus will be the guy at number 2 or if we will indeed draft a WR in the supplemental draft.

I agree with you, but he needed to get a rest when his wing was flapping down at this side... He didn't get it last year and he didn't get any help this year, in case that happened again.

A guy gets older, maybe thinks it's time to train a new talent, or take on a bit less. He doesn't look forward to another year of double teams, a broken body and his team saying, "No contract. No help."

It just rubs all kinds of wrong ways, the way they handled Mason.

If this turns out to be true, then obviously, thanks for the memories, Derrick.

This offseason has been too much for me to take. Steve McNair's passing, Bart Scott and other Ravens leaving via free agency, the Terrell Suggs contract situation, the questioning of Ray Lewis' loyalty, and the wide receiver dilemma.

Last offseason didn't even have this much news for us Ravens fans to take in, and we were just going through a coaching change!
The wide receiver delima will always be their? Who cares now we have an O-line to be proud off...

Lets not start bashing the guy to make it seem like a minor loss. This is going to hurt, if for no other reason then the fact that he has good chemistry with Joe.

Did not see this coming at all, This is a season killer. The ravens CANNOT afford to sit back again on whats on the roster or you can stick a stake in this season. I'm sure they will though.

wow, this is such a shock! Let's keep our heads high though. The Ravens are a great organization and we have the best GM in football. I know Ozzie will do whatever he can to get someone in here that can help this team. Now, if we get through camp without any moves being made then maybe it's time to panic.

If we don't replace Mason 2009 ravens won't go to the playoffs and they won't go over .500. Mason was the only reason the offense converted downs for the most part and that was double teamed. Why so much faith in clayton who couldn't put up numbers when Mason wasn't here and he didn't do anything spectacular when there was 1 less defender on him. Lets stop replacing old offensive players with old offensive players and pick up some young stud WR who already has a name.

Although this is a tough tough loss there are a lot of positives to come out of this.

1. Maybe this is finally a wake up call for the front office to find a young stud to replace mason.

2. This is a chance for Clayton/flacco to build that relationship and become the deadly combo we all want them to be.

3. We can clear up some money now for other things.

Although i don't like this, I think overall ozz should finally start making some phone calls to other organizations to find a solid player to add quality talent to our receiving corps.

And I mean really who WOULDN'T love to see the young clayton live up to his potential of being a 1st round pick, and growing with joe for years! i know i would love that.

I dunno about a season-killer. What stinks is that they're going to have to get another at least a currently decent WR then he's going to have to learn the system. I think Clayton'll be #1 WR at least to start this season.

Do you need a valium?

When Mason was out during that Texans game, we didn't really miss a beat and Clayton got a couple of catches in. Figurs even got in on the action. The Texans secondary were no slouches either.

Just something else to think about

Signing a big name is something that we probably CANNOT afford to do. It will cost us in the long run when it comes to future contracts and future draft picks. We may just have to hope that Kelly Washington, D-Will, Clayton, and Smith have what it takes.

Its easy to do good when the rest of the team is dominating but Mason could do good when we were losing and needed a comeback.

Easy there Mr. Glass - unlike you we are not made of "glass" and will not be broken that easily. Since when did one WR dictate the outcome of ANY Ravens game? Uhhh that'd be NEVER. As I mentioned it is a dilemma and one we could have more easily managed had it arose a couple months ago. But for reasons we all know D-Mase has been under a tremendous amount of pressure and possibly just felt he couldn't let it all hang out this year as he has his entire career.
We will be fine and this may just be the straw that finally breaks Ozzie's back into seeking out a new WR.
