why do people always assume the worst... maybe it is, maybe it isn't.... Idk how most of you would feel after one of your closest friends was murdered, but I would def want to take some time off

Thats what I thought as soon as I heard it, but I think it was a rash decision because his friend McNair died and he realized he wanted to spend time with the family. He'll be back this season.

This whole situation pisses me off. If he did "retire" this is a HUGE downfall for the ravens! When we went into the 2009 draft and picked 0 receivers ppl seemed to be ok with that which really confused me. Going in are #1 need was WR and when we got none i was pissed, but for some reason ppl seemed ok with it. Now are #1 receiver could be gone and we are left with a below average bunch of receivers. I feel like the ravens really screwed up. I believed that we were possible sb contenders but know i have extreme doubts. These "workouts" with WRs is stupid. They are all scrubs and will never have a profound impact!! The managment is usually the best in the league but they messed up here. They need to make a move for a playmaker and if we dont i feel like we will not live up 2 what we all expect.

Unless we pull off a trade for Boldin or Marshall, or another big time WR, it is hard to get excited about any changes we may see in our WR corps considering what is available out there.....

I dunno....kind of hard to trust the FO when they absolutely refuse to upgrade our weakest position.......

just like they "refused" to upgrade the QB position the last few years, bringing in McNair, drafting Troy Smith, then taking Flacco in the first round..... yeahhhh..

right player, right price.

I think the best thing for this team and organization to do it prepare as if Mason is retired and no longer a Baltimore Raven. That way if he actually stays retired it's no big deal, and if he comes back then great.

The quicker the Ravens can dead the story of Mason the better. The longer they allow it to hang around and be a Brett Favre type situation, i think it will start to become a distraction, especially for a younger Offense.

I think they have started to prepare for life after Mason. There was that article on BR.com which said that Clayton is now #1. They also had that work out for other receivers.
The Raven's cannot control the media's reaction to the retirement announcement; there's not much else going on with the Ravens besides this so I can understand why the media would pounce on it.

Derrick Mason's retirement has in no way even come close to resembling the Brett Favre drama.

Ok, everyone needs to stop with all of the panic. Who knows there might be a dynamic receiver already on the roster. Who knows that these guys can do unless they get some balls throw their way in games? Everyone knocks on Clayton but truth is, he didn't get as many passes thrown to him. That had more to do with Flacco and Mason then it did with Mark Clayton. When Clayton DID get the ball thrown his way, he made plays a few of them were spectacular. Williams is a question because he hasn't been able to not get injured but sometimes that happens in football. In all, the Ravens success has never and does not start and end with WR's. It starts with the Defense, running game,O-line,and Quarterback. I think Flacco will make the receivers around him better.

No the Derrick Mason retirement is not where near Brett Favre, but i didn't mean as a national story. I just meant as far as will he won't he.

In my opinion if Mason is not in camp by the first preseason game then the Ravens have to give the impression that they've moved on. When a question about Mason returning is asked, the answer seems to be, "We're holding out hope". I think at some point sooner then later, the Ravens have to turn that answer into.......If Mason wants to be here he would be here, and until he returns we can't worry about Mason.

I know they can't control the media asking questions, but they can control the perception imo. I think the quicker they give the perception that they are moving forward with or without Mason the better. So if he does return then great, but if he doesn't then big deal.

I think Flacco did a really good job in his first camp interview, when asked that question. He said something like he spoke to Mason, and just let him know that he'd support whatever decision he made. Flacco went on to say that the team would love to have Mason back but he had all the confidence in the world in the guys that will actually be out on the field.

And that goes along with what the Ravens have been saying all along, I just think it'd be best to eliminate the story as quick as possible, if at all possible.

I bet all of those that were dead-opposed to us getting a WR either by trade or in the draft have suddenly changed tunes. I think it's kind of funny. Sucks for the team though. As far as McNair, eh. I see all of you saying what a terrible thing it is to lose such a great person. Cheating on your wife with some girl, and leaving your kids for a piece of a$$ isn't what I would call a great person. He deserved to be punished. Maybe not THAT much but hey, you reap what you sow.

And you'd be very wrong.
