Derrick Mason Retires!?

436 posts in this topic

Yeah you just beat me to it...

I wonder if its because he wanted a contract extension or raise or whatever. Maybe its from all the stress of losing a former teammate and friend. Either way, he will be missed if its true.

Now I think we can all agree that its time for Ozzie to pick up a receiver, even if its a veteran.
Emotionally there are things that are more important. It’s time right now. I don’t know what’s going to happen from here, but it’s going to be really nice to see what life has in store for me. What I want people to remember about my NFL career is that I played hard…played hard in practice and the game. I tried to make everyone better and would do anything to help.
Adam Schefter said "Ravens News" on Twitter with a link to the article!! I was expecting good news for some reason, maybe Suggs signing or a new pick up and I read this.

I'm speechless!!!! Didn't see this coming whatsoever. :(

thats a big loss for us, but i cant say i didnt see it coming.. after learning that he had to have the shoulder surgey, i understood that a surgery like that is tough to come back from.. it looks like the death of mcnair didnt help the issue.. thanks for your time in charm city 85.. you'll be missed

Well, here's the link to the Sun:

I hope Ozzie has a serious contingency plan for this situation, and have a 50% feeling he does not.

Ugh, yeah Ozzie. You might wanna go get Marshall or Boldin now.

Great, great career Mason. You served us well.

Well, that just made my stomach sink.

I'm not mad at him or anything, [okay, maybe a little upset] but I was really looking forward to this season and hoped to see him connecting with Flacco for a LOT of yards.

Is this really true? I don't know anything about that site.

I'm not really surprised. After McNair dying and surgery I don't think he was as motivated to play. I think we need another receiver though. If Smith is our number 3 we need someone else because Harper is not good at all. Maybe Washington will serve a purpose this year. He was a great Raven.

Nothing on Ravens website or the official NFL website about Mason retiring???? Why would he annouce his retirement to an unknown Jock????

That's a real shame. There goes Flacco's shot of having a good season. He won't have any even halfway decent to throw to.

Ouch. Flacco felt so comfortable with the guy. That really sucks.

But life goes on. More cap room to get the Suggs deal done, AND we could trade for Marshall now.

I'm also excited about Demetrius Williams who's gonna be our starter unless we bring in Marshall. If he stays healthy he could put up some sick numbers.

Looks like we might be lookin for someone in the Supplemental draft after all.

2 birds one stone, Get Suggs to agree with a trade to another team for a reciever.

there's the profootballtalk link.

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO???

Ozzie made it clear that we made it to the AFC Championship game with the receivers we have now. Well we just lost our best one. So Ozzie needs to make something happen. We can't do much with what we have now...

What exactly was he thinking when he complained publicly about not getting a long term deal a few months ago when in reality he was already thinking about retiring? This whole thing is bizarre. Maybe the McNair thing is messing with his head, but this is bizarre.

If true, he's saying he's not emotionally into playing. Of course it has something to do with McNair's passing, but it likely also has at least a bit to do with being thrown into fire again, as the #1 receiver, with no contract extension and no additional help.

How long can a guy spend flapping one arm around, going above and beyond, being the man and still have no contract or extra help? I don't blame him at all. He was giving it all and via action they told him, "Give it all again and we won't give you any more help or compensation."

I am thankful for Mason helping Flacco get developed so the Ravens can get over the hump. Maybe if we win a Super bowl we can give a ring to Mason.

If this turns out to be true, then obviously, thanks for the memories, Derrick.

This offseason has been too much for me to take. Steve McNair's passing, Bart Scott and other Ravens leaving via free agency, the Terrell Suggs contract situation, the questioning of Ray Lewis' loyalty, and the wide receiver dilemma.

Last offseason didn't even have this much news for us Ravens fans to take in, and we were just going through a coaching change!

We just lost our best WR, we won't get anywhere near the Superbowl unless we replace him.

I hope Ozzie doesnt panic and make a poor decision, trying to replace Mason. The last thing we need is to give up the farm to get another quick fix wideout. Mason is 35, we knew we would have to replace him eventually. I hope Ozzie continues with his long term plan and see what the guys we have can do.
For the past couple of years, everyone's said that Mason was a #2 at best. But even with a shaky QB situation, he still performed like a #1 even if the numbers weren't always there. I'd rather have a guy that can convert on downs and do all the little things with no help, than a guy who needs a great QB to make things happen.

80+ receptions and 1,000+ yards "wuz a #2 at best"? No... Please stop.

Mason deserved to have the pressure taken off of him. He deserved help, and a contract extension. He got neither. Pile on top of that set of insults the fact that reality came freight-training into his life, very close to home, and he saw clearly there were more important things for him to spend his life on.

I've seen people on a couple of websites blame Derrick. Bullcrap. If there is any blame at all, it goes to those that buried his extension request and didn't raise one finger to give him some help.
