Suggs' Contract

35 posts in this topic

I was reading this article on profootballtalk.com and it talks about how a franchise player has until July 15 to sign a multi-year extension, and that if that doesn't happen, the player can only sign his one year tender and has to wait until the last game of the year for a long term deal. I don't know if I misread, but see for yourself:
The key text comes from Article XX, Section 2(k) of the CBA: "Any Club designating a Franchise Player shall have until 4:00 p.m., New York time, on July 15 of the League Year (or, if July 15 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the first Monday thereafter) for which the designation takes effect to sign the player to a multi-year contract or extension. After that date, the player may sign only a one-year Player Contract with his Prior Club for that season, and such Player Contract may not be extended until after the Club's last regular season game."
Here's a link: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/07/12/a-closer-look-at-the-july-15-deadline/

Does this mean that if Suggs is to sign a contract extension, he has until Wednesday to do so? If so, that freakin sucks...

yeah, exactly. we've been looking for a deal for a week or so, but no dice so far. many think that if that deadlines comes and goes this will be the last time we see sizzle playing for the ravens. tagging him a third year would cost 17-18M and getting into a bidding war in free agency would end up costing us a pretty penny. ozzie needs to get this done ASAP or he may be gone.

Agree. My gut says everyone is waiting for the dust to settle on McNair's death. Seems tacky to announce a new (probably large) contract while we are dealing with the loss of a former Raven.

Wrong, Suggs has been crapping on our contract offers for 3 straight years.

Well he did want to take a "hometown discount" until Scott and Lewis both got paid.

I'm going with this one. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I'm hoping they are just giving everyone a little time to grieve. And maybe each party is waiting until the last second to see if the other side will crack and they can get just a little bit more.

You can't Franchise a player more than twice.

uhh, yes you can. it will cost you; however, as the CBA requires that the player's salary is the average of the top 5 salaries OVERALL in the NFL. a third tag would cost around 17M next year, which we may or may not do. but it is definitely possible to do.

I thought you could do it unlimited times.... but the salary will keep going up like 10-20% every year (after the average of the top 5 players in the league)

the tag value is the GREATER of 120% of the last year's salary OR the average of the top 5 at that position. peppers is making so much money already this year because he made a ton before he was tagged. the 120% trend continues even as other stipulations (top 5 salaries in the entire NFL for year 3).

Ok, I stand corrected... I've just never seen it happen, and it seems like a very bad financial move on the part of the teams.

I'm surprised the NFLPA would allow that.

well, if next year is uncapped it would give us one more year of sizzle. at that point, he wouldn't be so young anymore, we would have had time to develop his successor, and we would let him walk. SB has the money, so it's just a matter of whether or not there is a cap to maneuver around. i don't think it's ever been done, but next year would be the time to do it for us.

If we tag him again next year I am going to be very, very pissed. Let him go somewhere else and when he realizes they aren't going to give him Albert Haynesworth money he will come running back.

Now at this point, I think that Suggs was just lying about his contract, when he had absolutely no idea how the negotiation were going.....

I think Suggs is good as gone

It is very easy to assume if the Ravens can't offer him something by the deadline this year, next year the Ravens will have nothing better to offer. It is safe to say RoflDogs "Suggs is as good as gone"

I only hope Suggs will give us a better last year than Scott did.

dont be so sure.. he could still get a long term deal done, if the NFL goes uncapped next year he could become a RFA under the one year rule, or could sign after this year.. its not that far-fetched to think one of the three scenarios could happen..

i still have hope.

I appreciate the trying circumstances around McNair's death; therefore I am less concerned than I usually would be - however, that's not to say I'm not getting nervous, things are getting a little close for comfort! Cmon, lets do this!

To be honest, I see Suggs not signing a contract this year regardless of what we offer him. He knows damn well the Ravens are 99% not likely to tag him a 3rd year and pay him 17m for a year and he also knows he can get a BIG pay day on the market. So I don't expect him to sign a multi-year deal.

They'll get something done, i'm 100% on that one. They're probably still working out minor things and don't want to cave in until they really have to right before the deadline.
No, someone will give him Albert Haynesworth money, even if that isn't his asking price. There's always teams that overpay -- and not just the Cowboys/Redskins/Raiders.

Next year, the best thing, at least, in my opinion, is to tag and trade him
so we can get SOMETHING out of this, like I don't know, a 1st and a 2nd?
