Tony Gonzalez To Block More

9 posts in this topic

Tony Gonzalez-TE-Falcons Jul. 7 - 12:26 pm et

Coordinator Mike Mularkey indicated that Tony Gonzalez will be asked to do more blocking in the Falcons' run-first offense.
"He's a productive blocker and that's important in our offense," the OC said. "As successful as he's been as a receiver, he's a good blocker too." Gonzo was essentially a rocked-up wideout for years in K.C., but Mularkey made it clear that Atlanta's offense will continue to revolve around Michael Turner. Don't expect Gonzalez to repeat his top fantasy TE finish from 2008.

thanks for the article, but i'll still take gonzo as one of the top 5 TEs from a fantasy standpoint.. witten, gates, and gonzalez have been in a league of their own it seems like the past couple years of FF

I'd still take him if available. I tend not to believe much of anything teams say in the off-pre season. I refuse to believe talent like his will just go to waste blocking. Not to mention save the top 3-4 there wasn't a lot of difference among TE last year.

He was a top 5 TE pick on the Chiefs, with Ryan throwing he should be top 3. I might even risk taking him as a #1.

Look for D Clark to get more catches from Peyton this season.

That is a good find. I was almost considering drafting a TE higher this year, but with this news to one of the already few highly productive TE's, I think I'll pass lol.

Looking at Atlanta's schedule they have some tough defenses to play this year. Especially defenses that specialize in stopping the run. It makes sense that Gonzales will have to block more. Because they are going to see a lot more pressure this year than last.

Tony Gonzalez admits he is still "uncomfortable" in the Falcons' offense and is doing more blocking than ever before.
Gonzo caught just one pass for seven yards in the preseason opener. "You get in a whole new system, I'm blocking more at the point of attack, I have different route-running schemes and I'm working with a new quarterback," he said. "You either adapt to it or you don't." Expect Gonzalez's numbers to drop dramatically this season. Let someone else take him on draft day
