Wide Receiver Options In The Near Future

28 posts in this topic

So for this past offseason all the receiver talk has been about Anquan Boldin or Brandon Marshall. Well how about if we wait until next years draft and free agency? This will be a list of Free Agents/Draft prospects that will be available in the 2010 offseason.

Please Note if any of these players in the Free Agents have been re-signed to their teams, I apologize and will take them off the list.

Free Agents

1. Vincent Jackson, San Diego Chargers
Height: 6'5 Weight: 240 Lbs Current Age: 26
Personally, I'd love if he hit free agency and we could land him. He's got great size and I saw him make a few spectacular catches downfield this year for the Chargers.
Character Issue: Received a DUI in January, but I dont think thats a huge deal unless it happens again.

2. Antonio Bryant, Tampa Bay Bucs
Height: 6'2 Weight: 205 Lbs Current Age: 28
Has good size and had a career year in '08 with Tampa with 83 catches for 1,248 yards and 7 touchdowns.

Now I know that some of these guys won't even hit free agency, but these were four players who I thought would be in reach, and have good size and upside.

Draft Prospects For The 2010 Draft
I don't know much about these guys since I'm not really huge on college football, but these were the top prospects on the scout.com

Dez Bryant - Oklahoma State
Height: 6'2 Weight: 215 lbs
Stats For 2008 Season: 87 receptions for 1,480 yards and 19 touchdowns

Arrelious Benn - Illinois
Height: 6'2 Weight: 215 lbs
Stats For 2008 Season: 67 rec and 1055 yards, 3 touchdowns
* Went to Dunbar High School.

Brandon LaFell - LSU
Height: 6'3 Weight: 205 lbs
Stats For 2008 Season: 63 rec and 929 yards, 8 touchdowns

So there it is, a few potential free agents, and draft prospects for the 2010 season. This list will probobly change in the next year, but still it's always interesting to look into whats available in the future.

So lets get some opinions, and some people I may have missed on this list.

Numbers aren't off the charts with 777 yards in '08, would be an interesting pick up in '10 if he hits free agency.

Vincent Jackson intrigues me. He is a big physical guy which we need but according the Charger fans he is extremly inconsistent. Now id take a chance on him beacuse if his size, speed and stats. i think he can become great but i do wonder if he would be just a bigger clayton( Inconsistent )

Antonio Bryant, if this guys hits FA i would be waiting by the computer 24/7 until it says Ravens sign Antonio Bryant. He is everything we need. A big body guy who is a deep threat. I love him as a player and he would be a great toy for Joe. Would love him here.

Dez Bryant - Absolutely love him. he is larry Fitzgerald version 2.0. He doenst have larrys hands but who does lol. He is similar speed to Larry, i think a bit quciker. He runs the deep ball extrmely well and can jump over any defender. He will go up for a ctach and come down with it. Just doenst have the speed to be considered a top 5 pick. i think he has everything you want in a WR and would love if we could nab him

Arelious Benn - Think Brandon Marshall or Anquan Boldin. Has the body of a runningback and is a monster after the catch. Love him as a prospect but doubt he slips past 5. This guy is the next big thing at WR. Benn would look great in a rvens uni as he would dominate for along time.

Brandon Lafell - would be lieing if i said anything about him but what i do know is that he is a big bodied receiver from LSU who can run. Fast player who is going to the ravens in a lot of mocks

I also think guys like Brandon Marshall, Braylon Edwards in FA and Demaryius Thomas (who i think the ravens will get in the draft next year, or who i hope we get) or Jermain Gresham in the draft would be great options aswell

I love Thomas as i think he is the next TO without the mouth. And if we could get Gresham there would always be a missmathc on the field. We won a Superbowl with Shannon Sharpe at TE and we need another recieving threat there for Joe and Gresham is that.

Love the list except for Braylon Edwards. Watched him make SO many bad drops last year.

I rather get a reciever through FA or a in the 2nd round of the draft, than the first round. I really think we need to draft a playmaker next year for our aging defense.

Vincent Jackson is going to be good this year. He has been tearing up in OTA's and he dominated in the last half of the season last year. I really like him and would be awesome if we could get him but i'm not getting my hopes up. He will want a lot of money and I don't think the ravens will pay him, because that's not our style.

I think Bryant is overhyped and isn't going to be worth the money that he wants.

I don't know enough about college players to say anything, but I don't think the Ravens are going to spend a first round draft pick on a rookie unless they are best available.

I'm starting to become positive with our recievers. Maybe Marcus Smith can keep improving. I feel like his potiential is really high, and next year he will make another big jump. And if Clayton and D Will can stay healthy then we could have a solid recieving corp and not even have to make any dramatic changes (considering how much D Will is supposed to be improving). I still think we should draft a receiver next year though.

don't forget that mason, clayton, and demetrius williams are ALL in contract years this year. i think we will probably keep 2 out of the 3, but i definitely see us adding someone via free agency. also, remember that vincent jackson came to san diego during cam cameron's days as the OC. cam loves him some big WR's, so he will most definitely be in ozzie's ear about jackson. if we can snag him as our #1, keep clayton as our 2, then have marcus smith/demetrius williams/justin harper/kelley washington as our compliments we will have something going (and not have to overpay for mason)

I don't think that Williams and Clayton will cost too much even though they will have good years. Considering how much Williams has been hurt and how Clayton has only been mediocre, they wont cost too much. I don't think we will keep Mason unless he gets the veteran minimum.

Yeah he's worse than Marshall and Boldin when it comes to clashing with coaches.

Thank you!And do we really need him? He's going to turn 28,not really old,but 3-4 years down the line when he's exiting his prime and still wants top notch $$,will we give it to him?I'd rather get Brandon Marshall or even Braylon Edwards over him.Younger is better.

We look set for the future, powerhouse d-line, young LBs, young secondary, franchise QB, young HBs and a young o-line with Ray, Mason, Reed, Birk and Gregg to learn from.

All we need now is BIG PLAY WR.

I'd have a heart attack if we drafted Dez. But I expect him to be a top 10 pick, and I have my fingers crossed that we WON'T be a top 10 draft pick team... unless we trade up :P

Hahaha well I don't know too much about these college receivers but I looked up at the stats they had the previous year and Dez Bryant 19 TD's??? Ridiculous. This guy seems pretty good anyone have any good video on him? Plus yeah forget Braylon Edwards he is gonna make Flacco's passer rating plummet with all his drops, also Antonio Bryant, not the best team player, Harbaugh wouldn't buy into him either.

Its pretty safe to say that it may be Masons last year in the NFL. It is guaranteed if that shoulder gets injured again.

Yeah I'm pretty sure Mason will retire this year shoulder injury or no shoulder injury. I don't see the Ravens paying Mason after this season. I think Mason will hit the Free Agency and after nobody goes after him, he'll just retire.

I think some of the posters who talked about Vincent Jackson, is dead on. He is probably the only reciever outside of Brandon Marshall I would want out of all the recievers. Cam Cameron was in SD at the same time Vincent Jackson was, it would not suprise me that Cam will be in Ozzie's ear 24/7 if he is not re-signed and hits Free Agency.

I see SD franchising Vincent, he has too much potential to let go. If anything Chris Chambers will hit free agency and sign with the Raiders for a bagillion dollar 7 year lol contract.

I want a beast WR but I dont know how many will fall to the 32nd pick :P

Buc fan here. That is somewhat of a misconception. Bryant has had some incidents earlier in his career. The most famous was throwing a towel at Bill Parcell's face. You need to have thick skin around Parcells especially if you are a young player. When he was with the 49ers he did argue with Nolan but Nolan admitted later it was a mistake to release Bryant. Bryant hasn't had any off the field problems yet since coming to Tampa. I kept on hearing how he was one of the hardest workers during TC being one of the earliest players to go out and practice. Missing a full year taught Bryant to appreciate football even more. He has been a solid team player since coming here.

Here is a WR prospect to keep your eyes on in the near future. WR Malcolm Williams from the university of Texas. He is a red shirt sophomore who is poised to have a breakout year since he will be in the lineup. Seriously he reminds me a lot of Andre johnson. Big, fast, and athletic. 6'3 who can run a 4.4. That 91 yard touchdown against texas tech last year was SICK.

I will Add 2 names to the 2009 WR watch.

#1 Dezmon Briscoe JR, Kansas
6-3 200
2008: 92rec 1,407yds 15.3ypc 69Lg 15TDs

#2 DeAndre Brown SO, Southern Miss
6'6 228
2008: 67rec 1117yds 16.7ypc 97Lg 12TDs

I will enjoy watching both of these guys tear it up this year. I know Brown won't be coming out because he is not eligible, but Briscoe might come out early.

Both of these guys have good size and speed. They both have something to prove. Brown has to prove he can overcome a terrible leg injury he suffed in the Bowl game last year, and Briscoe has to prove that he can continue to produce at a level similar to Dez Bryant.

a guy that I'm praying has another down year is Braylon Edwards.. 26yo w/ tons of talent and upside if he can hold on to the football.. had a monster year in '07 and was slowed by nagging injuries in '08..the Browns just drafted Robiskie and Massaquoi, so although they might want to resign or even franchise him, they arent in a situation where they have to do so..

maybe a more realistic player I would like to see in Baltimore next year is Bryant Johnson - former 1st round pick who is physical but can still stretch the field, born and raised in Baltimore.. bring him home ozzie!!

Although I understand everyones desire to have a "big name" receiver come in, I'm getting sick of hearing about it. Our receiving group is NOT that bad. Mark Clayton was really starting to step it up last year, and under Joe Flacco going through all the camps he will continue to improve and get better. Derrick Mason is getting up there in age but he's a consistant receiver although mostly short route. My biggest point really isnt dwelling on the receivers we have but the fact that its more about the quarterback then the WR, think about it.. Did Mark Clayton do a whole lot when Boller was QB? Even Mason wasen't as consistent, with Boller it was mostly Heap(who I def. think needs to and will be more involved this year!) Having a good qb brings out the best from every player on the football feild because HE is the most important player on the team. I think that's been proven as we've watched our team change from 2008-2009. As long as Flacco improves our receivers will follow suit.

The thing I don't think people are understanding is that if we get a big play WR.... we will probably score too quickly, and for us that is a bad thing, whats the point of scoring those 7 points, if the other team will just eventually march down the field and score on us.... We are the ravens, our offense is the break for our defense, thats why they control the clock... than our defense comes on the field and hits them in the mouth

not to mention, we get our TE's back this year... the only reason everybody wants the WR is because our corps last year was always double covered due to they being the only ones to run down field

Our receiving game will be better this year due to the fact that teams can't afford to always have double coverage on our WR's... or even afford to put extra pressure on us every down

ask yourself... how many teams with big play WR's have SuperBowl rings, within the last decade

He has a lot of questions in my book and the only thing that Fitz and him don't share is route running which Fitz has but Dez is from a purely spread offense...

and also all he does is jump balls and I don't see much else from him...
Jump balls are nice, but he should get yards in other methods

If he can fix that, Bring him to Baltimore

EDIT: to Ravensfan23 above, I absolutely LOVE the idea of Dezmon Briscoe coming to Baltimore.

so it seems no one is talking about Demaryius Thomas - WR - Georgia Tech

This guy is a monster with ball in hand. The closest thing to Terrell Owens (on field) to what many have seen in a long time.

I think he could be there in round 2 because Georgia Tech will run the football a lot and he wont get throw to very much but he is a monster and have great size at 6'5 235 pounds. He is built very thick and is like Brandon Marshall with ball in hand. My dream draft for next year is this

Round 1 - Sergio Kindle / Jermain Gresham
Round 2 - Demaryius Thomas
Round 3 - Best 3-4 DE available

I don't think there will ever be anything wrong with scoring too fast with the Baltimore Ravens defense. IF the offense came out and put up 7 quick points, then that would put the defense at an advantage and we would be in attack mode. If the D got a 3 and out(which we usually do first possesion) and the offense comes down and scores again that is a 2 score game. Now i don't know the exact numbers but the Ravens are something like 60-1 when leading a game by 14 points or more since 2000. So imo scoring quickly is not a problem

Then u have to understand that scoring quickly and often will all the Ravens to still be that ball controll offense because we would be protecting a lead. Then u have to ask yourself, did the Colts score too quickly on us last year, or did the Gaints score too quickly. Bottomline line is if the Ravens offense is capable of putting up 28-30 points a game it will be hard for any team to beat us.

I'm not one of those people that think the Ravens can't win without a STUD WR, would i like to see one here? Hell yes, because it would only help(depending on the person). However i think our WR are very much capable and are as good as the Steelers or Pats Superbowl winning WRs groups.

Building the offensive line was the best thing for the Ravens to do. Having a healthy Heap and Smith will also allow the Ravens to open things up. The Ravens missed on a lot of opportunities last year and capitalizing on them this year will make the offense much better.
