Why No Mason Talk

36 posts in this topic

I see a bunch of threads on why we need to sign suggs. Has everyone forgotten about Mason or just take him for granted ? We desperately need him healthy and happy. He is our Offense when it comes to the receivers. I know everyone thinks he is no Boldin or Marshall but he is the BEST we have and has been a great receiver his entire career and after the perfomance he gave all last season while being hurt shows he is commited. So i hope you dont mind me saying this but here goes.

Screw Suggs and Sign Mason !!

Because if we cannot get a hard 3rd and 10 and cannot keep the offense on the field we will never stand a chance against teams like Indy or Pitt. Thats the honest truth.

Sign both! They both are extremely valuable to this team in multiple ways. It's hard to overstate their value.

Thats true, but doesn't suggs want HUGE money ? We are in no way capable of handing out a huge contract and sign mason to 2 or three years tops.

The salary cap can be manipulated in many ways, I'll leave that to much smarter men up in the Ravens offices. Anyways, all players desire the big signing bonus, something that has been denied to Suggs the past two years with the franchise tag. He's earned a big payday, he's a ProBowl player and a leader on Defense. Mason, too, is worth the money he wants, the reasons should be obvious. There's a lot of players we need to get re-signed, though, think about Jared Gaither, Fabian Washington, Justin Bannan, and a ton of younger players.

Here's a site that catalogs all the Ravens' contracts

Look at Jarrett Johnson's salary! OUTRAGEOUS! I've been an outspoken critic of his and he is not and will not be worth the $4 million he gets this season.

4 Million, i had no idea. That is outrageous and i see why you have been a critic of that topic. I hate to think anyone is on our team just for the money. I am in a dream world i guess where the guys actually want to be a Raven. I hope suggs does not prove me wrong. I have spoken out against him on several events in the forums just because he has a very good surrounding cast here and he should feel lucky to be a part of this D. I don't see this being Masons last year, he still contributes alot and it seems like receivers play alot longer now look at Holt.

Why do you think Suggs is our entire team slugz ? No one person can make us win or lose except maybe the QB. Suggs is a very good player but he is showing he doesn't want to be here unless we pay him top money.

I agree. I think the front office can figure out a way to sign them both.

As others have alluded to above me, the reasons why no one's talking about Derrick Mason?:

1) Mason is aging and near the end of his career; his short-term and long-term value isn't as high as Suggs', no matter how important Mason was last season.
2) Seeing as how Mason wants "financial security," there's no telling how much he's looking for in this final contract. He won't command a big payday, but it might not be cap-friendly given how short of a stay he'll have.
3) The coaching staff may know something about Mason's ability that no one else (not even Mason himself) knows yet. Coaches often know well before a player does when their production is at an end. A player's will to play often clouds their judgment at the end of their career.

Basically, there's too many variables at work here, and there's more risk than reward in signing an aging vet like Mason to a longer deal now, as opposed to signing a younger stud like Suggs. It's not that Mason still can't play, we just don't know for how much longer. If he can continue to produce as he did last season, then sure, he'll be re-signed -- after this coming season. If not, then it'll be time for both sides to part ways in the offseason.

We all love Derrick Mason, but he can't keep playing Superman when Father Time is his Kryptonite.

here we go again did i ever said he was. I just saying if he say sign mason forget suggs. mason is not gonna be here long and if he would take mason over suggs who else would he take over our other players. I was just joking when i called him Al Davis Jr. Its funny cause none of us have the power to sign or trade any one and its getting a bit intense with all these ideas about things we cant control.

I completely agree with that. dude's getting older, he can't pull out his heroics every game now, or even if he can, its not gonna last another half decade.

Very well said. I think we should sign Suggs to the long term deal that he deserves. D-Mase, on the other hand, should be signed to a one or two year contract due to his age.

ok so we dont sign mason to a 2 or 3 year deal and he doesnt give what he did last year, lets hope suggs can catch a football i guess. We are already hurting for receivers and we ignore the one decent one we have. Does not make any sense. It is like either or. If we cant score we might as well have a tight defense so you guys are right.

First signing Mason has nothing to do with signing Suggs. Mason is really looking for a contract extension but if he is not healthy, why would we extend his contract? If we were to extend his contract the money for WR at his age will not interfer with signing Suggs.

Though I can't calculate for sure yet whether that point total (385) included defensive touchdowns, the Ravens defense only had 6 defensive TDs.

Let's assume that the 385 points does include defensive TDs then:

If you do the math and take the 7 points for each TD and PAT combined, multiply them by the 6 defensive scores, you got 42 points out of 385 contributed by the defense; that's only 10.9% of the points the Ravens scored -- so it's not as if the defense is doing all of the work. After all, with a rookie QB under center, the Ravens could've easily been like the Boller-led Ravens and never capitalized on good field position at all.

Suggs is a crucial part to our defense. Mason is a crucial part to our offense. But the difference is we are going to need to find a replacement for Mason soon. There has never been a wide reciever over 36 that has had a 1000 yard season. Suggs is widely known as one of the best linebackers/DE/whatever he is. Thats why he is talked about so much. As much as people think they can replace him so easily, he can't be replaced so easily. Suggs is a like a trick play on defense. He can do so many things, an offense has to prepare for every possibility.

Eh, Jerry Rice did it, multiple times. But I agree with everything you said, Mason won't last forever and Suggs is under-appreciated for his amazing talents. They are both valuable members to the team.

When you say Suggs, I hear Haynesworth. Do you think for any second in your mind, that if Suggs was signed long term, he would've played in that Championship game? I say hell no! Man, he will not play his hardest, which is why I don't really want him on our team. IF he did prove me wrong, then I'm all for it. But trust me, his character is too needy. Think about it, the past two years, he's accumulated over 16 million dollars. Any person could retire with half that money. I don't get why he would rather have a lavish life style, when he could be known for being the most selfless player in history by taking a hit for just one or two seasons. Don't get me wrong, I know he deserves his money, but he is being like a spoiled brat about it. "OMG, I only have 8.1M! I'm supposed to have 8.2!!!!!" Yeah, cause your not gonna blow that on some worthless crap like a half an hour's worth of gambling, right?

well, my comment should have been.. im surprised our starting LT is making less than 500k this year

but about mason, the two most obvious reasons no one is talking about an extension is age and his now durability issues, which go hand in hand

Is there really any need to do all of that? Don't offensive rankings only include offensive touchdowns, not defensive touchdowns?

It includes ALL points scored, Special teams and defense included. Seeing how we had the second most defensive TDs in the league if my memory serves me correctly our ranking of 11th in scoring is kind of inflated. Especially considering our redzone offense was so bad.

I think the facts are like this, who do we have on the roster right now that can do what Terrell Suggs does? nobody. Also, we have no WR's on our roster that are even CLOSE to being able to do what Mason does game in and game out. Until we find those answers, we need both players on this team.
