The Cb Plot Thickens

Here is a good article about how KJ Gerard is impacting the coaching staff and front office.

This CB race is gonna be really interesting. I think Rolle, Washington, Foxworth, Carr, and Webb are all locks. That leaves 1 or 2 spots for Walker, Oglesby, Anwar Phillips, and Gerard (probably others too that I can't think of right now). In the article it hints at Gerard fitting in at safety but we are loaded there so I don't think he can steal a roster spot there. If he can play safety and corner, he might surprise and earn a spot over Walker and the other guys because of his versatility. I cant wait for training camp when the pads come on.

I'm so confused. They said kj was slow because he ran a 4.49? Most of the cornerbacks ran that fast in the combine this year. Sounds like a stud we got. Thats really cool. He has good size and can tackle. Cant wait to see this guy mature.

Yeah, you're right...hey may have a "slower" 40 time but as the coaches say he has great instincts, that should make up for his speed even if people don't think he's fast enough for a cornerback.

Agreed, I hear he is slow but the article implies he "has to be" the interception leader throughout OTAs even though they don't officially keep the stats (Im sure Gerard has made a mental note), apparently he gets 2 per session. And I'm not sold on LarDarius Webb, we haven't seen him play, heard about him or anything, and last time we picked a small school CB who sat out OTAs it was David Pittman....tell me how well that went <_<

I think it's safe to say Frank Walkers days are limited.

1. Foxworth
2. Washington
3. Rolle
4. Carr
5. Webb
6. Martin
------------
Walker
Gerad
Ogelsby
Phillips

Now of the remaining CBs, Walker would be the most expensive. $2 million for the 2009 season. Is he really $2million better than the next guy on that list; whom by the way could be had at minimum salary?

Webb has been wearing the red no-contact jersey because of an ankle injury I believe. Not serious, but he couldn't really do many team drills, just individual ones.

i think KJ is fightiing with Derrrick Martin and Fran Walker for the spot and unless fran restructures i think KJ or Martin will get in. IMO i would actually prefer depth liek this

Foxworth
Washington
Rolle
Webb
Martin
Gerrard

So we drop Carr as i believe we are paying him too much and we still have Figurs, peerman and eric decosta believes that webb is the best returner in college football so that would be my depth. All young corners with an experienced veteran in rolle

No way we drop Carr. He played decent at CB last year for the Titans and he is a great return man. I remember when we played Oakland at home a few years ago, the only players on their team that impressed me were Sebastian Janikowski and Chris Carr. He runs like Leonheard does- north and south- but he has better speed and cuts better. Figurs shouldn't even be on this team anymore as far as I am concerned. Once a guy runs scared, he's about done.

we aren't going to drop Carr, we just signed him. Walker is the odd man out because of his salary. Walker is a bum anyway... Gerard had 19 picks in college! he has a nose for the ball, i don't care who you are playing against. i want to see him make this team. and i agree the article was hinting at a possible FS/CB hybrid for Gerard. which wouldn't be a bad thing for a dime back.

Foxworth
Washington
Rolle
Carr
Webb
Gerard

Oglesby, Martin, and Phillips fight for 1-2 PS spots.

you beat me to it!! i agree 100%. Figuars is done with us. we have Carr, Webb, Zibby, Pearman, and Rice that can all return kicks better then Figurs, and they can play another position on offense/defense.

Yeah Walker is the odd man out. He's taking up a lot for a possible 3rd down and nickel CB.

I think we could probably trade Walker before the season, or i hope we could. I love the depth we have, i cant recall us having this much depth in the past 5 years. I wouldn't mind seeing Martin, or Gerard, Either one would be fine.

This is a good problem.

I love these type of articles, gets the fans all perplexed. I see a diamond in the rough with Gerard (by the way that's how you accurately spell his name, lets not mess it up people).

We went from a team that was begging for cornerbacks to now having a very tough decision. Why did we not have this problem in the AFCCG?

the more the FO looks at trying to sign Suggs, the better Walker's 2 mil is gonna look. Just keep him for the meantime for camp fodder. what's the time frame for cutting him to avoid the cap hit?

Sounds like we have a luxury of options at corner back! Glad we have such speed at the position, especially matching up with the likes of Ochocinco, Coles, Edwards, Holmes etc in our division.

Yes, IMO they will be forced to cut some decent players, but as we found out in 07, you can never have enough depth at that position. If the Ravens can have a good pass rush this year, it will be very hard for teams to go verticle on us because we have the speed to stay with those receivers while hurrying the QB = TURNOVERS

And there Reed and Landry covering over the top = MANY TURNOVERS!!!

yes walker played well and he is very physical but we are paying him farr too much money. I love Frank and love his swagger but he costs us 2 interceptions last year beacause of Pass inteference and also a Punt retunr for a tD by Yamon for holding. Yes frank had a 60% incompletion rate which is one of the leagues best but he is too much money agianst the cap when we are negotiating with Gaither, Ngata, Suggs etc and Gerard cost next to nothing

Also you say Gerard isnt physical. well there is a reason, its because he is a playmaker CB not a physical one. Similar to Cromartie, Asanste Samuel etc. Always getting picks

Could he be this years Orlando Scandrick??
Who do you guys think will be the number 1 CB? Foxworth or Washington?
Foxy just beacuse he is more physical than fabs. Its differnt this year beacuse usually C-mac would always play left side and samari would always play right side no matter what. So this year we might rotate to our advantage. Fabs will defends the quciker guys and foxy will cover the bugger guys IMO

I think Fabs is great in man to man coverage but foxworth is very good when the ball is near him. He seems to have eyes in the back of his head lol. He has looked very good in OTA's according to duff man so ill give him the nod altough i think we wont have a 1 or 2 but jsut play who suits who better if you follow me lol

Haha, yeah I get ya. I think someone said it earlier but surely this could be one of the fastest CB combos in the league. I can't think of a quicker combo off the top of my head...

I dont like our CB situation, everything still seems up for grabs and Walker/Foxworth are getting paid like proven starters.

Walker is getting something like 2 million dollars a year and Foxworth is getting something like 7 million dollars a year i think. I hope we cut Walker. We can find someone that is equal to him in talent for less. Foxworth needs to prove himself. I like our cornerback position. They just need to prove themselves.

D-Fox has the physical skills to thrive in our defense, here's hoping he does!

I'm starting to think that Webb is going to play a lesser role this year. I havent anything about him other than he had or has a hamstring issue. I'm hoping this isnt going to be a third round bust.

Well this is exactly what i remember seeing from Pittman, i hope Webb doesn't fare the same way...hopefully it's his hamstring injury, but he needs to get that fixed soon for training camp.

Hamstring injuries tend to linger for some annoying reason. Hope he's good to go in time for camp!
