Joe doesn't get the credit he deserves, I doubt he even would have if we won the Superbowl.

. . .this isn't good news.

I absolutely loved Stover, and he is the fourth best/most liked/respected player in Ravens history, but he doesn't have the range anymore for 40+ yard kicks or touchback kickoffs, and I don't want to carry two kickers.

The only reason I'd want Stover back would be if the two young guys completely and totally tank.

I agree, out with the old and in with the new. The Ravens are in full re-build mode!

Look, I know that we should stick with our two young kickers and let them battle it out. But on a team that figures to battle and be a pretty good team, I would think Matt Stover is pretty clutch and I wouldn't be opposed to him returning. It's like Mike says in his article- with a crucial game on the line, who do you want kicking that 40 yard field goal? I'll take Matt Stover. Maybe most of my feelings for him are nostalgic. I'm not old- just 20- but I'm old enough to clearly remember the entire existence of the Ravens franchise. I remember him carrying our offense for years and years, and it's tough to let go, especially for such a classy guy as Matt.

Yea i could see how it would be tough to let a class act like Stover go. However that 40 yard FG thing is a load. Stover is no more clutch then most other Kickers in the league. Yea all know and love Stover because we have watched him for many years make FGs and we don't really know of any other Kickers in Baltimore. However i would line up with 80% of the Kickers in the NFL for a 40 yard kick with the game on the line in decent weather.

Now i will admit that i expect either Steve or Graham to struggle early on in the preseason, however once one of those guys seperates themselves in that competition and find their groove they will be as automatic as Stover or any other Kicker in the NFL.

I posted some numbers about Kickers in the NFL and Stover didn't stack up well against the better kickers. So what are we truely losing in Stover? A Great guy and teammate, but what else?

Yea and Dan Marino still holds a lot of passing records in the NFL, doesn't mean he can come in and perform well this year.

Brett Favre is top 5 on most peoples list of QBs, you want him to take over for Flacco this year?

Mike Vanderjagt is listed a the number 1 most accurate kicker in NFL History, where is he now?

I could continue if you need me to.

Yea Stover has been great during his time in the NFL and as a Ravens, and i think he could still be a great kicker from under 40. However the kicking game has changed, you need your place kicker to be able to consistently hit for 40+ and even 50+ sometimes. Stover can't do that anymore. You need your Kicker to be able to be a weapon in the Kickoff game because field postion is so important. Stover doesn't give you those touchbacks to control those good KO Returners like Cribbs.

It's not knock on Stover, because i love him as a Raven but his time has passed. No matter how touch it is.

90% of the Kickers in the NFL connect on atleast 80% of their field goals. Stover connected at a 82% on FGs last season and that was good enough for 25th in the NFL.

I know we all love Stover, but the fact is that numbers don't lie. 90% of the league kicks at the same or a better percentage as Stover on overall kicks. Stover kicked at 56% from 40-49 range, 30 other kickers had a better percentage then that.

Stover is one of those players that u truely hate to see go, and i hope that he comes back to the team in some form. However, i think it is one of those tough decisions that just had to be made. Yes its hard to see the Ravens without Stover, but i think many will get over the loss of Stover quickly.

I don't know how many people can relate to this, but..........It's like when your grandparents had that really old TV. Now this tv has been in the family for decades and it still works. However that TV doesn't operate nearly as good as it did years ago. The Picture fades, the color is bad, the nobbs on the front are off, so u have to use pliers to control them, the anntenna broken, so you have to use foil wrap to get a better picture. Now even though all of this is going wrong with the TV, grandma and grandpop just refuse to let it go. Everytime you try to get them a new one they say, this TV is just fine, i haven't had a new TV in all these years i don't need one now.

Then you finally convince them to get a new TV. You buy them a nice Plasma TV, hook up Directv to it, and they absloutely love it. You couldn't pay them enough to take that old TV back now. I guess what i'm saying is that when you've had something for soo long and it still works, it's hard to imagine that there is something out there that would be better. You get into a comfort zone and really don't allow yourself to think there is a better option, even though it's clear that it is.

Stover has been reliable for many years, and if we had to rely on him this year, i'm sure he would be the same old Stover. The problem is that old TV just doesn't work the same, and there is an better option avaliable, but many of us won't realize it until we see it.

Think about JO, how many thought that his not being at LT last year would have been such a non factor?

Yeah that is true; and I believe he was the second best in field goals. He also holds the record for most consecutive good kicks... and I have no idea what the number is, but that's beside the point. It is just like RF23 said, Favre may hold the record for most tds, but who wants him now?
