I thought this was kind of interesting:

7 Points: Merriman's Chargers future in doubt

by Ed Thompson, Scout.com

Point 1: 2009 could be "Lights Out" time for outside linebacker Shawne Merriman in San Diego.

With the 16th pick overall in the 2009 NFL Draft, San Diego selected 6-foot-2, 274-pound defensive end Larry English, who will play outside linebacker in the NFL.

Did the Chargers front office folks lose their minds? After all, they already had Merriman

Interesting. I feel a lot of teams will be after him including Baltimore.

I thought about it for a second after reading the article, but as much as I love Terrell Suggs, I could see a situation where Shawne Merriman comes to Baltimore as a free agent and replaces Suggs.

I was thinking this as well, I think he is more explosive and could be cheaper for us than Suggs will be.

I doubt Merriman will play his final year in San Diego. I believe the Chargers will lock down Rivers and Merriman and play Larry English at DE(though some believe he will be a OLB.) Last I remember the Chargers lost a starting DE to Dallas, so they need someone to replace him, and I guess Larry English is the guy.

Oh about the comments of Merriman replacing Suggs, I'll choose Suggs over him anyday.

The Chargers are a 3-4 team, i highly doubt English could play 3-4 DE.

How well has he played since he got popped on the steroids test? As I recall one year he is a juggernaut, the next he comes up hot on a roids test sits out 4 games and now his talent is back to earth amongst the mere mortals.

Can anyone say James Harrison???

As far as I'm concerned, they would have given that divisional title to the Broncos if they had won. They need to give us the divionsional when we don't win.

Can anyone say James Harrison???[/quote]He was suspended 4 games in 2006 for the steroid violation, and came back to record 17 sacks in only 12 games. Then, in 2007, he had another strong year while playing through a nagging injury and recorded 12.5 sacks. Had he not gotten hurt in the first game of the season in 2008, there's no reason to believe he wouldn't have had another double-digit sack season.

I'm not sure if those numbers are what you'd consider to be "amongst mere mortals." -_-

He is not going to be cheaper then Suggs if he returns to his pre-injury form. With 44 less games under his belt he's only got like 14 less sacks then Suggs career total. He put up atleast 10 sacks in each of his first 3 seasons.

He's torn it up since his steroid scandal.

2005 - 57 tack, 10 sacks

2006 - 62 tack, 17 sacks

2007 - 68 tack, 12.5 sacks

He was suspended for steroids half way through his 2006 season, came back in 2007 and was still just as productive, if not more. He's the real deal!!
