Playing In College And Someday Maybe Getting Into The Nfl...

10 posts in this topic

hey guys i just have some questions on what you guys think about this.. rite now im 5'10'' and weight 150lbs. Im am fast but not fast enough to be a wide out. my 40 time is like a 5.2... keep in mind that that time is before offseason work has started.. My gpa is around 3.5 and i got around a 1600 on my SATs. Im currently a junior in high school and really want to play college ball.. i can catch pretty well so i could play tight end the only problem there is that im not bulky enough to block... i could be a wide out however i dont know if im tall or fast enough.. and then there is QB. I have a fairly solid arm and can throw the long ball... my max distance right now is probably somewhere around 50-55 yards.. what do you think i should do? My dream is to play proball.. what colleges would be good to look at to feed into the nfl?

Well, academically, you should have no problem getting into college with a regular scholarship alone. As for playing college ball, you'll definitely need to add some bulk to your frame. Even at a lean and muscular 150 lbs., that's still light for even a running back or cornerback. With your 40-time being around the range that it is, you'll definitely want to look at playing tight end if you can bulk up, or play QB like you said.

Honestly, unless you have an amazing arm, I wouldn't suggest going for QB unless you KNOW depth is thin at whatever school you're aiming for. The reason why I say that is because it'll be harder to practice/play your way up the depth chart since coaches will usually be set on a starter. And if they're not set on a starter, they'll just go with whoever jumps out at them with size -- which works against your favor here. However, if you have your heart set at QB, at least bulk up so you can take more hits and can at least look the part.
yeah i know what you mean.. what feeder colleges do you guys think are good to look at where i would get playing time?
Since you're from Baltimore, I'm obviously gonna throw the University of Delaware your way. However, it's not too much of a stretch, seeing as how there's no solid starter at tight end this coming season with the departure of Robbie Agnone (now a training camp body for the Washington Redskins). Also, there's definitely vacancies at the wide receiver position, and it wouldn't be a stretch for you to make the cut even at your given size and speed; former #1 receiver Aaron Love was only 5'9", 160 lbs. and he was Joe Flacco's favorite target (other than Agnone).

The other reason why I'm suggesting UD is because the team has a history of awarding full athletic scholarships to walk-ons; one of my classmates this past semester, Siddiq Haynes, just earned a full scholarship and is projected to start at defensive tackle after being a two-year letterwinner and making the most of his time as a situational player -- and he wasn't even guaranteed to make the team at first as a walk-on.

I'd definitely stress bulking up though. And do it HEALTHILY, of course. All the muscle mass in the world won't help you if you can't absorb a hit.

Just bulk up. You can probably make it to like a CAA school like Towson or Richmond at least.

Another recommendation is to get in touch with a regional scout (not just with UD) and speak to him about possibly sending in game film of yourself. If he likes what he sees, he might give you a tryout or more. The key is to catch someone's eye, period. Once you get your foot in the door, all that's left is to show that you're everything the film says you are, and you're in.

To be honest, great academic future Probably not an athletic future. Now, if you add 30lbs of muscle maybe you ould have chance. It sounds like you have a very small frame, without some divine intervention that kind of muscle mass does not pop up over night even with the ilegal substances. Can you kick a football?

i wouldnt be so sure.. any "D1AA" school is still extremely competitive.. heres the thing: you have one of two choices.. you either need to get a lot bigger or a lot faster.. coming out of high school i was 5'11" 185ish and ran a 4.7, but to play at a big time school, i was too slow to be a DB and too small to be a LB.. thats just the way it is.. granted, i was an all county, all conference, all area, so on and so on OLB/SS, i was kind of stuck in the middle. im not trying to brag by any means, because i certainly know thats not anything to brag about, but i got a bunch of offers from smaller schools (D2, D3)in this area to play both baseball and football, but decided to play baseball at a D1 junior college to try and transfer out to a big school, but blew my arm out and now im stuck as a intra-mural superstar lol.. jk, but my biggest regret was not going to a 4 year school right out of high school and getting a chance to play football at the next level.. just keep working hard because when the day comes to hang up the cleats you'll find comfort in knowing you did everything you could to do what you love to do.. football is a fun game. its not always about getting to the NFL because the guys that actually make it are few and far between.. enjoy the time you have putting the pads on. its certainly something ill cherish for the rest of my life
