Nfl Might Ship Two Regular Season Games To Uk In 2010

22 posts in this topic
After seeing fans jam London's Wembley Stadium the past two years to watch an NFL game, the league is considering sending a second regular-season contest overseas in time for the 2010 season.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday that the second game also could be played in London or another location in the United Kingdom. The issue will be discussed at next week's league meetings and could be included in a larger plan to add up to two regular-season games to the NFL schedule.
I hope they consider the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff, i suppose Murrayfield will be considered if Scotland are interested or maybe a Northern England stadium like Old Trafford or St James Park!?

But outside of Wembley the Millenium Stadium is the best option imo (could be biased lol)! In travelling terms (for Europeans by car) it's a bit more ideal and to have the option of playing the game with the roof open or closed would be an advantage.

What do you guys think?

i dont want to offend you fans on the other side of the big pond, but i dont really like the NFL overseas.. with all the economic hardships in the U.S. today, moving the NFL abroad has a bigger toll than many of us think. On Sundays in Baltimore during the NFL season, local businesses earn about 40 million dollars in one day thanks to the Ravens.. plus, season tickets holders probably wouldnt be too happy about paying for a "home" game thousands of miles away.. i dont know.. if it brings in revenue for the organization because of a widening fan base, fine, but i think the NFL should stay in the U.S. until a wider array of foreign players start making an impact on NFL rosters

We discussed the pros and cons of an International Ravens game a couple of weeks ago and i agreed with a lot of points made even though i'm from the UK!!

But we know that these games are happening Internationally so i made this thread to discuss potential venues for the 2nd game more than anything. ;)

No offence taken btw, i do see your point. :)

gotcha.. well looking at it that way, i couldnt tell you any venues i see fitting because ive never been to the UK, so im sure your points are much more valid than mine..

quick question out of curiosity though... how many fans can fit in some of these stadiums? i know they're all packed for soccer games.. again.. just out of curiosity

Wembley is the biggest stadium in the UK with a capacity of 86k for NFL games, the Millenium Stadium in Wales has a capacity of 74.5k, Murrayfield in Scotland has 67k, Old Trafford 76k and St James Park 52k.

There's also Twickenham that holds 82k but since that's in London like Wembley i doubt it will be considered if they are looking at other locations in the UK!

Selfishly i'm hoping it's the Millenium Stadium because i only live 20 miles away :)

i don't think the ravens will.... probably the eagles, cardinals, steelers, patriots, colts, cowboys (really any of the "big market" teams) ( i put steelers and cardinals cause they played each other in the superbowl)

This raised it head again last night during the SKY broadcast of the Chargers Vs Cowboys game.

The NFL UK Commissioner during a telecon did confirm that there would be 2 UK games in 2010, the Home Teams had been agreed, though not officially named, the Away Teams or the Dates could not be confirmed until the Full Schedule was sorted in mid-January 2010

You wanna lend us the Ravens for a week ?

I agree 100%. Not to mention the toll it takes on NFL players. I travel overseas a lot and a 7 or 8 hour plane ride (even longer for midwest and west coast teams) across time zones really screws you up for several days. The NFL is asking players to play their regular games here, then travel overseas and shake off the jet lag, play a game, and come back and be ready for the next game in the USA. Just to much to ask. The players are only human.

Jaguars and Raiders home games would be the most logical to export due to attendance issues. There's a reasonable chance that the Ravens would be scheduled to play the Jags on the road.

How do you think we should market the games if the Jags and Raiders are comming ?

America dont wanna see em, so here they are !!

By the way, I dont think many of the Raider Nation would get past Passport Control

I think Twickenham is a better stadium for it than Wembley to be honest. Everyone complains about the state of the pitch at Wembley, because it tears up easily, but no one considers that Wembley is a football stadium, where 11 150 pounders prance around for 90 minutes. A rugby field would be much better suited.
As for the second game, I think Millennium stadium would be a good move too.

While this is true, you have to remember that the NFL looking at this from the NFL's perspective, not the USA's perspective. They sell nearly 90000 tickets virtually instantaneously, without seats being discounted by season ticket holders (unless home fans still get their seat... just in a different country) they're bringing their product to an unsaturated market. Sundays don't usually mean half the people in attendance go and buy a Jersey, because they'll already have one, but it's the not the case here. I think it's a good business move for the NFL until the novelty dies down.

No. I am, however, happy to give you the Colts, Bolts, Bengals, or Redskins. You may borrow the Steelers but I want them back promptly, thank you.

Bingo. It's a novelty. They'll do this for a few years until it becomes common and forgotten.

Just make sure they take home games from teams that get blacked out anyway.

Checked the schedule of opponents for next year...

Toilet Bowl #1 - Rams Vs Bucs
Toilet Bowl #2 - Bills vs Lions

No one is gonna miss those games, lol
