Barnes doesnt really look like he runs a 4.4, but he does (workout warrior?). He also threw up a combine high 31 reps for a LB.
We have very good speed on this defense.

We could maybe be the fasted Defense in the leauge........I see barnes coming in in pass rushing situations, and if we can get 4 or 5 sacks out of him, that'll be great.
NFL is way diffrent then college. how does everyone assume because someone did something in college, they can do it in the pro's.. Just because they <could> play ILB dont mean there best suited to be there. McClain is making a case that he can because there having him compete with Gooden who is a Natural ILB.
well i have to say both guys have the body to play inside and both tackle well from what I have seen. When it comes down to it, its still just football. With Ray Lewis as a mentor I think almost anyone can play ILB...so I do not see what how it is so out of the realm of possibility.
4.45 i bloody fast
Thats what Jeremy maclin ran and he is way faster than Godden altough id love it if he could run a 4.45 :P
I don't remember where, maybe from the Baltimore Sun, but apparently Gooden was chasing down WR during minicamp. Wherever it was I know it was a reputable source so apparently he is really fast.

From what I remember (key word there), McClain is more of a power rusher (that doesn't mean he bull rushes only, but that he uses his motor to redirect a tackle to another direction, etc etc) than a Speed rusher, and Barnes is a speed rusher that uses his hands to get pass rush.

I agree. JJ is very talented and versatile but he is not giving us the pass rush we need opposite side of Suggs. What is his stats since he has been starting OLB for us? I believe all OLB's no matter what D you are in (3-4 or 4-3) needs to have a little speed and JJ lacks that attribute.

agreed about JJ, he should bulk up to about 285 -290 and play DE, he has great strength and excels at taking on blocks so he could replace Pryce although his cap id ridiculously high so unless he perfomrs this year i see McCLain or Barnes starting at LOLB and JJ being cut

I think he is damn near that weight right now as we speak. I was thinking more around 300-310 area!

JJ is like 265-270, he is not near 290.

Well, he was a defensive tackle. And it's not like we cut him so he's strong enough.

But we did force him to change positions. If he was good enough at DT or DE, whatever position he used to play, then we wouldnt have asked him to change positions.

I never said he wasn't strong enough,he just doesn't put the pressure on QB's at DE. He's more of a Run-stopping LB.

Maybe at the time we didn't need any DT/DE's so you neva know but I just know that JJ needs do for us what Woodley does for the Steelers and I don't think he can do that. What I don't understand is why we let Adalious go. Suggs/Thomas combo was so deadly!

I would rather my OLB be more of pass rushing LB's than stopping the run. Let the MLB's and D-Line put most of their attention to doing that!

I quoted you as saying 'he's not strong enough'.
But I get what you're saying now.

JJ is a bit slow and lacks coverage skills, maybe he should bulk back up and play on the line. At least hes a lot quicker than Dwan Edwards. McClain and Gooden are ready, I doubt Barnes is, hes got some way to go.

I really don't like Barnes, just looks too small to play LB anyway,he's 6"1 and 255 maybe a little too slow.

Uh.... Barnes has a sick nasty explosion at the snap

and Mcclain is the same size and bulk as Barnes, so you can't blame one for being too small and ignoring the other who's the same size

You know I havent seen Barnes named mention for this competition. I was wondering why but then it hit me, in Barnes rookie season it was the Eagles punter who Barnes took that cheap shot at during the preseason, Harbs was still their coach when that happened. Thats a bad first impression to make on a coach, I dont think Harbs likes Barnes very much. I remember hearing that deactivited him for a game during the season because he didnt think Barnes was playing hard enough on ST. I have no proof that Harbs doesnt like him, its just a hunch.

Slow? He's one of our fastest LB, if not the fastest.

Wow, that makes total sense and is probably correct, but their are injuries that limited him too

I would think it's because Barnes' primary position is OLB whereas the position being battled for is the Inside position. We already got suggs and jj there...he's just a luxury, occasional pass-rush linebacker if ya ask me.
