Wr Eron Riley

54 posts in this topic

Ok, I know there are about two threads on this, but I wanted an organized thread with as much information as you guys can present about Riley. I'm not very familiar with him at all, so please post some info and links so I can know what he excels at. I've heard he's a blazer, and similar to DHB. Thanks...

I believe so.. ESPN has him listed at 6'3" 205lbs..
NEGATIVES: Intermediate-range target, as he lacks the second gear or ability to stretch the field. Marginal skills running after the reception.
I like this part as they list one of his weakness as something that I don't think could not be more false. His speed.

That's the worst scouting report i have ever seen. It sounds like they took Derrick Mason's scouting report from back in the day and just pasted it in there. Riley is the exact opposite of what the scouting report says. He's weak, he's not a reliable target, he drops passes. The only thing he does good is stretch the field. Yet the scouting report has it the other way around.

This one is a bit more accurate:

Strengths:
Excellent size...Outstanding timed speed...Terrific leaper...Able to do some damage after the catch...Proven vertical threat...Smart w/ good awareness...Can contribute on special teams...Has a lot of experience.

Weaknesses:
Marginal hands and will drop some balls...Inconsistent...Is not very strong...Needs to be more physical and aggressive...Has some trouble beating the jam...Bit of a Workout Warrior....Wasn't super productive.

Notes:
A three-year starter for the Blue Devils...Named 2nd Team All-ACC in 2007 and 2008...Was honored as Duke's Most Valuable Player as a senior...Really improved his draft stock by running much better than anticipated at his Pro Day...An intriguing Height / Weight / Speed prospect with some tools to develop...May be worth a late round flyer.

All I know about Eron Riley is that in WalterFootball's wide receiver prospect rankings, he is the second-lowest prospect and the only reason he isn't last is because Dante Love had a career-ending back injury. Not a positive sign:

Not plausible whatsoever.
The fact that list has "projected" 40 times and because Pat White who hasn't even ran a legit route is that high, makes me completely disregard that list.

i wish everyone would just shut up about this guy. it seems like people only get excited about "skill" players. there is no way that this duke wr is going to come in and actually make the roster over the guys we already have.... Mason and Clayton are locks, maybe even Figurs. Then we still have Harper Wheelwright and Smith. All these guys have experience the NFL now. There is a reason why we didn't draft a WR.. We Don't Need One!!!

i'm sorry, but i can't agree with you there. you never know what kind of intangibles a player brings to a team. he may just show up at camp and work his butt off, eventually beating those same guys out for a spot. i was impressed with his tape. i'm not saying he's the savior of our receiving corps or anything, just that you should never automatically count someone out because of where they're drafted or not drafted. let's just wait and see.

Everyone is just excited because they wanted a WR. Give these guys a break and let them enjoy this moment. It's very easy to get excited over skill positions and I'm not going to lie I was pumped to see that we got Riley. I found this guy about a month before the draft and was excited because he shows a lot of potential. I don't think that you can say we don't need a WR, but at the same time I think our WR's are reliable. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that nobody gets excited with reliable WR's because they want a homerun hitter. Hopefully Riley can develop into that homerun hitter and we can have a nice group of WRs. I think this first year will be strectch on offense for him, but you never know because Davonne Bess was a UDFA last year just like Eron Riley and he posted 54 receptions for 554 yards and 1 TD. Obviously, that is a great season from a UDFA let alone most rookie WR, but even if Riley caught 15 balls this year and had two long touchdowns I would be happy. The point is anything can happen, so give this guy a chance.

I totally agree with you here Samic. I think he definitely makes the roster though because of the special teams attributes he brings. Remember Harbaugh loves these type of players. Riley could make a huge impact as a gunner for us.

Harbaugh also said that he would have serious problems drafting a WR that isn't willing to play special teams. One that does tells him the he is tough, willing to go over the middle and take a hit and is probably good at blocking down-field. That sounds a lot like this kid. Someone said that the big fast types just run straight, well I saw some plays where he had to make some moves to beat the defender. This kid has the natural tools, let's see if he can take that next step to play at an NFL level.

He really is a Ravens type player, people have said there is no chance he makes the team and they're dead wrong. Harbs LOVES receivers who play special teams. Watch 5 minutes in and see what Riley can do on ST. He is a total player and I think the Ravens made a really nice move picking him up.

The thing is that Riley does bring a skillset that we do not currently have on the team. What other 6'3, 200lb WR that runs a 4.3 is on the roster? (Please don't mention Yamon "No Heart" Figurs).

Is this guy our answer? Who knows. It is too early to crown him or cast him off. I will say that if he has any kind of hands and runs even average routes, I think he sticks as the 6th WR that is inactive each week.

Marcus Smith, Wheelwright, Harper are all the same type of receiver: slow possession types. I think one of them makes the team.

Heres a pretty cool article I found online about him. It looks to be from his hometown newspaper.

He did not look to slow in that youtube video. But he did not look that agile either. Kinda stiff even in the open field. Not sure what to think.
