Grading Our 2009 Draft...

16 posts in this topic

Round 1 - Michael Oher OT, Mississippi = A+

I like many of us wanted to see a wideout here, but I love this pick. Oher is a seasoned college starter with 40+ starts and instantly fills our arguably biggest need coming into the draft. He is a versatile lineman and will instantly help in our tackle rotation bejind Anderson at the very least, if not win the starting job right out of camp. He is a very durable player as well and has solid technique coming out of college. the knock on him is inconsistency throughout games but with the way Matsko managed to take Gaither (who a lot of people had tons of questions about replacing Ogden) and make him into a capable starter in his 2nd year. Oher has the work ethic to allow Matsko to improve his abilities as well.

Round 2 - Paul Kruger DE/OLB, Utah = A-

Our d-line definitely need some help and if you disagree than you weren't watching Ben Roethlisberger run around and beat us three times last year by successfully buying tons of time with his legs. I think theFRANCHISE pointed this out in another thread, but this guy is perfect for that. Has good pass rush potential, can cover pretty good and has the quickness to roam sideline to sideline right now, word is he may will put on some more muscle to without losing much of that quickness with which to get to QBs and RBs. I like the pick, it may take him a year to really start coming along but he will instantly help in the defensive rotation. Kruger also will provide some good insurance if we can't get Suggs signed long term.

Round 3 - Lardarius Webb DB, Nicholls State = A

Love this pick too, EXTREMELY versatile guy who can come in as a return specialist, a dime back, and even possibly as a Wildcat formation option. Lots of upside here.

Round 5a - Jason Phillips ILB, TCU = B-

Will come in and play a some special teams probably as well as provide depth behind Ray and Tavares. That's about it, good value pick though. He is not the biggest or fastest guy but brings lots of collegiate experience with 4 years as a starter and has the mental sharpness to stay on top of plays.

Round 5b - Davon Drew TE, East Carolina = C+

This is really the only pick I'm not too high on. First of all I figured we had enough tight end depth with Heap, L.J. and Quinn returning from injury. Secondly, I thought that even if we did address TE in the draft, I figured we would grab the versatile and productive James Casey of Rice or Cornelius Ingram since we actually checked him out pre-draft. Both guys hung around on the board forever and were more or less consensus better values here. Drew put up solid receiving numbers for a tight end and was average all around blocker in college. We'll see I guess, you never really know how guys will pan out.

Round 6 - Cedric Peerman RB, Virginia = B

This was definitely not a big need but I can't argue with this pick at all. Peerman has some limited collegiate exprerience but was pretty productive when he was playing. He is a pretty fast and elusive guy and is pretty powerful as well for his size (I hate to cite a combine stat, but he completed the bench press 27 times), really pretty similar to Ray Rice actually. Probably won't see the field too much if he does make the final roster, but if injuries do strike again, Peerman could wind up being a great value here

Overall I give our draft a B+. Oz addressed most of our needs and got some good value picks considering the amount of our picks and the placement of them in the draft. Obviously Oz is confident in all of the big, young receivers already on our roster or he has something else in the works......a trade perhaps?.....I'll continue to trust him for now. Good overall draft.

i liked the draft, i say B+ overall. i liked the depth picks and it'll allow alot of the young guys to get use to the system before being thrown in. i also like the way the team is saying we're going, running game and defense. the passing game will come, be patient

I don't like grading the draft overall until we have seen them play. As for the players, I agree with you Corvus.

I like all of your grades except Drew and Phillips. Phillips should definitely be higher, his instincts are amazing and he will be the replacement for what Scott did, not Gooden. I can see your low grade on Drew but the FO has said all along that any TE's we go after would be blocking ones, so Casey and Ingram were easily ruled out. I like Drew because he brings a great combination of size, athleticism, smarts (former QB btw, but Ingram and Casey also were I believe), and maybe even versatility as an HB which we don't have.

Overall grade: B+

Overall draft grade a solid B. With the last 2 years in mind I don't think this team can have too many DB's or Te's injury bug messed with us bad there. Solid O line pick in Oher , loved the pick of Kruger think he will move up quick finding away on the field.Phillips a solid body with a lot of intelligence.

the TCU D was absolutely insane this past year. look at this stat: this side of USC, TCU had the most backers drafted. that's crazy!

Grade: B

Nothing Sexy, just solid.

- Michael Oher is a steal at 23.

- Paul Kruger could be the next Adalius Thomas

- Lardarius Webb is a playmaker on defense and special teams

- Jason Phillips = Beast

- Davon Drew is an athletic TE that is willing to block

- Cedric Peerman looks like our insurance policy for McGahee, but also could be Willie Parker in disguise.

However, we have to wait 3 years to see if the draft was a success.

Micheal Oher - A+
We get Flacco a moster at RT and are building him a great wall, great value at 23 as he was my 3rd rated OT and in my top 10 players, love this pick

Paul Kruger - A-
Kruger is a guy that i love, great awarness and just doenst stop the motor, always in the quaterbacks face and just seems to make plays, will be a rush linebacker for this year and then be Trevor Pryces replacement next season, builds great depth on the defensive line

Ladarius Webb - B
Although i think we should of traded down and got a guy like Coye Francies who is a physical and big guy im still happy with Webb, he reminds me a lot of Asante Samuel, whenever he is on the field he makes play, great player and solid pick

Jason Phillips - A+++++++++++
Okay so IMO this has got to be the steal of the draft, i dont car about Maualuga or any one else, this is the steal of the draft, Phillips will start day one and be a great ILB for us, the smartest player in college football and will onlg get smarter next to Ray Lewis, with Phillips playing the thumper role it allows us to only use gooden when ray is out of the game so Gooden doesnt damage his 230 pounds as a thumper, an IBL core of Phillips and Gooden in a few years excites me, i love this pick alot

Davone Drew - B-

Good overall player, although i would have prefered Ingram or James Casey i think he is an okay player, great hands from what i have read and a reliable blocker, i trust the scouts with this one

Cedric Peerman - A
Many people who follow coolege football closey and scout player believe he is the Next MJD, the guy is electric and will be a great compliment back for us, i could see this as a move that means ARI is interested in Ray Rice so we send them our 2nd next year, Todd Heap and Ray Rice for Boldin but thats just speculation, would of prefered a WR here like Gibson but i love the pick

Overall - A
I am just pissed we didnt get Cornelius Lewis, Jason Watkins, Jamarko Simmons, Kevin ogletree, Chris Baker, Frantz Joseph, Darnell Ellerbe or Domonique Johnson

Great pick up in Gano BTW aswell, he will be our next Kicker

Round 1 - Michael Oher OT, Mississippi = A-

i only gave an A- because i really wanted Britt but i like Oher,he has more potential then Gaither and he can play either tackle position

Round 2 - Paul Kruger DE/OLB, Utah = D-

this guy is Jarrett Johnson 2.0,i really dont like the pick, has a low ceiling, average players are suppose to go in the later rounds not round 2

Round 3 - Lardarius Webb DB, Nicholls State = C

this guy will be nothing more then a punt returner....lets hope he's a good one

Round 5a - Jason Phillips ILB, TCU = A+

may end up being our best player from this draft, very underrated and a steal in round 5

Round 5b - Davon Drew TE, East Carolina = INC

i have no idea who this guy is so i wont grade him but we shoulda drafted Cornelius Ingram or James Casey

Round 6 - Cedric Peerman RB, Virginia = A-

i love this pick, great value pick, now McClain can play more FB now that Neal is gone

overall i give us a C- cause we didn't address our biggest need(WR)

Please, explain why Kruger is JJ 2.0. Is it because he's white? They've got very different styles of games, but they DO both have great character. As for Webb I can see some people just don't really understand what kind of player he is, they just assume he's another small school corner that won't be a factor. Do some research people. Oh, and as for grading the draft a C- because we went by VALUE and not NEED is just ridiculous. Maybe you should root for whoever Matt Millen ends up with because he will be sure to please you with his drafting, and I'm talking to all of you guys who are mad because we didn't take a WR this year.

Round 1 - Michael Oher OT, Mississippi = A+++++++ (absolute steal)

Round 2 - Paul Kruger DE/OLB, Utah = B (inexperienced on defensive side of the ball, but that makes for unlimited potential.. still some guys available i might have rather seen, but oz and his staff know a lot more than I do, so we'll have to wait and see)

Round 3 - Lardarius Webb DB, Nicholls State = B (playmaker.. fits the bill in Baltimore.. lacks size but is very physical)

Round 5a - Jason Phillips ILB, TCU = B+ (i see him more as a 4-3 backer, doesnt rush the QB very well, but can run and cover.. solid tackler.. hopefully he pans out as Ray Lewis' successor)

Round 5b - Davon Drew TE, East Carolina = A (unending upside.. only a TE for 2 years, extremely athletic.. one of my favorite picks in the draft)

Round 6 - Cedric Peerman RB, Virginia = A- (4.34 40yd/d - might suprise some people with contributions on special teams, tough runner, was one of the best all around football players available IMO)

overall B+/A-
