Jersey Foul

22 posts in this topic

Those of you who are hockey fans and read Puck Daddy might be familiar with this, but basically a jersey foul is when someone wears a jersey with a name that is not the name of an actual player, past or present, or it's the name of a player that doesn't belong on the jersey from that time period (i.e. Alex Ovechkin on a 1970's era Caps jersey). Here's some links to a few examples:

If you were to witness a jersey foul committed by someone wearing a Ravens jersey or even an Orioles jersey, would you take issue with that? I'm curious because yeah, I've seen it done on Ravens jerseys, such as a Ravens jersey with Unitas on the back, or even a few of them personalized with nicknames. Would you really care enough to give someone grief over it.

I figured I'd throw it out there since I'm considering personalizing an Orioles jersey with a nickname of mine (and no it is not McLovin :P ) and I wanted to gauge if I'd take a lot of heat from other folks in Baltimore ;)

I only get mad if the number on that customized jersey belongs to someone that is synonymous with the team. For instance, a customized Ravens jersey that has #52 but not R. Lewis on the back, or a #80 49ers jersey that doesn't read Rice on the back. There's just certain numbers that are untouchable, period.

I just got #1 with my last name on the back; I figured, no one wears #1 for the Ravens, and no one from my family will likely play for the team anytime soon.

Makes sense to me, of course, I don't see anyone wearing 82 (year of my birth) so I could get away with it for now ;)

I have cheapie custom with a nickname on it. I couldn't see getting a Jersey just to have some player leave and feel stupid wearing it. I went out of my way to pick an unused number though (19, as a nod to who is hopefully the second best QB in Baltimore History [#5 being the greatest]).

That's too easy, unless you're a Sopranos fan, then it gets even easier!

Well, I do have an authentic black Ravens jersey with #89 and Crowdog on the back. Even though the Ravens have had a few #89's on the team. #89 was the number I had the one year I played in a league waaaaay back in 1971, when I was 15.

Crowdog is just the nickname I have....based on the Lakota Crow Dogs.....(Google the name).

I have a #98 Steelers Jersey that I regret having made way back when (Casey Hamptons #). In hindsight, I should have gotten my birth year instead. Not that I don't like CH (I love the guy), but it's my name on the back, not his. It's kinda corny now.

Weird, when it comes to customising a jersey in the UK a fan will usually have his name with the number of his favourite player!!
Mainly because it signifies who his favourite player is.

After all, who would want to wear the name of the only Ravens qb to have a superbowl ring?
