2 out of the 3 categories are won by Reed for 2008....Showing that age is not a factor for Mr Ed Reed!

I think you short change Ed Reed by only including those stats.
Ed Reed has more PDs, INT yards and TDs and fumbles recovered. Also Ed has returned a punt for a touchdown and scored 4 times for blocked punts.
If you ask me who's a better player, I'll tell you it's Ed Reed every day of the week.

Thanks for the stats. It makes good reading in the off season. You always
post great informative material.

BTW, as much as you post here, do you have any time for your Steelers Board? LOL

Yeah, reed is a FS...polamalu is a SS. slightly different roles. but, a couple reasons reed would be better is b/c he was the only unanimous selection to the pro bowl this year as well as leading the NFL in interceptions, all while battling a career-threatening nerve impingement on his neck/shoulder. that speaks for itsself.

To be fair, the tackles are misleading since Ed Reed is asked to play more in coverage than in run support, whereas Troy Polamalu is Dick LeBeau's ace in the hole (no pun intended) because he does so well in run support that teams never know when he's really dropping back or blitzing. I mean, just watching him play, Polamalu sells the stunt so well that I can't even tell.

I'll still take Ed Reed though, homerism or not, because he leads all active defenders in return yardage, which ironically shows his value in the field position game for the offense. Additionally, he's so phenomenal with the ball that he's made plays every time he's been placed on special teams.

Plus, if you'll notice, most QBs are hesitant to throw deep in Ed Reed's direction; they'll usually test the other safety instead. Conversely, teams aren't afraid to throw deep against Polamalu -- but they still pay for it, more often than not.

Point blank.... Ed Reed puts points on the board single handedly. Polamalu helps but not in the same way. Reed doesn't play run support so he doesn't get as many tackles.

I would love to have Troy play along side Reed anyday, but if it came down to it, theres no chance I pass on Reed to take Polamalu. Especially if age isn't a factor.

I'm sure Pitt fans feel the same way about Troy, but what Reed does makes our D so much better and really helps us win games by himself.

Troy put points on the board against the Ravens.... : ( they're both great, Ed used to be like a missle when tackling you can now really tell IMO he tries to save his body ( with those nerve issues). With that said, I only have ONE JERSEY. Black Alternate #20.

I respect the hell outta Troy, he's a phenominal football player, but without a doubt Ed is the better all around football player.

Well, in this comparison age really isn't an issue. Sure, Ed's got 2 or 3 years on Polamalu, but Troy has a tendency to tackle with his head, and he's had loads of concussions. Reed's body is probably feeling a little younger than Polamalu's just because it doesn't take as much of a beating. I think Ed will play for longer than Troy because you can do what Ed does until your 35 or so. Troy's game is a young man's game, and I don't know if he'll still be firing on all cylinders by the time he's 30 (the same age at which Reed put up a DPoY caliber season)

I don't think you can go wrong with either of these guys. One is a 5 time pro bowler and defensive player of the year. The other is a younger 2 time pro bowler with 2 Super Bowl rings. They both take excellent care of their bodies and have had injury issues. Reed has the nerve issue to Polamalu's 7 concussions. Those could both be career ending given one bad play.

We should revisit this issue in 2015 when we see how things have played out because I think right now it's a push.

yea i know these are not all the stats that i could compare but since they both play different positions i would have to add in like 8 different stat areas......so i picked three

i am still working on the ray lewis thread but for the first half of his career they did not record tackles so im having a hard time coming up with a tree for him
