Depends on who's replacing him. $7M year can get us an awfully good player.

I doubt we'd dip into FA for that position, most likely the draft.

Ok, so being a regular here for a few months, I have noticed that there are several myths prevailing amongst some of our purple brethren. Let's examine these myths, and give them the proper burial that they deserve. Consider this a public service!

Myth #2

We don't need X wide reciever, we are a run first team!

Well, duh! Maybe we're a running team because our recievers suck?? And not for a lack of trying, we've already burned a couple first round picks on WR over the past few years. Make no mistake about it, if you can't run the ball, you're not going to win many games. But in order to bring that trophy home, a balanced offense is need. You HAVE to be able to make plays through the air consistently as well. That doesn't mean that you need a top 10 passing attack, it merely means that you need to be able to make plays though the air when needed. Yes, we DO need X wide reciever!!

Myth #3

Mark Clayton is an emerging deep threat.

I guess technically, this is true, due to the word "emerging". What a great word that is! It allows one to apply any arbitrary amount of time necessary to substantiate your pathetic debate.
"True, Clayton hasn't done anything in his four years in the league, but he is still emerging!" Do you see the silliness in that statement? No? Then nevermind, you're hopeless and I'm wasting my valuable time on you pissants.

Myth #2 Yeah we need a X WR but I'm just not sure that we do not already have one. We you game plan for a up coming game, you have to have a back up plan. For example the bengal's bracket D. Mason for the entire game someone else has to be open. You are telling me that you can not go 3 WR and get the ball to K. Washington as well as opening up the running game or are you telling me that there was no back up plan?

Myth #3 Funny and so true! :29:

Actually, I wrote this thread well before Kelley came along, so apparently our FO agreed with #2, lol...but truthfully, I dont think we would have even needed to resort to a 3 wr set had Washington been our #2 in the first place.
I think you're alluding that Kelley is our "X receiver", or at least should be, and I agree with that. Hopefully, our staff figures that out before it's too late.

OK but I may be crazy or something because it seems that when the ball is thrown his way, he makes the catch. Then we play a game and D. Mason is getting doubled and we are not throw to K. Washington. This is just silly to me! :th_shame:

Just a quick reminder to all, let's keep the conversation reasonably on-topic and also directed towards the points made in each post and not each other. From the tone of a lot of these comments, this is more sarcastic or humorous than actually meant to be taken seriously, but at the same time, it's hard to express sarcasm on the internet even with emoticons.

With that said...to whoever's dishing out negative rep points for no reason, even though the reputation system literally means nothing, let's grow up. Thanks.

(And now, back to our topic...)

I think sizzle needs to step it up just a little bit more, Ngata, and Pryce need to get to the QB! and the WHOLE secondary needs to step up, ED not included ;)

Sorry for digging this outta the graveyard (this was originally posted over a year ago), but the recent Mark Clayton thread made me think of this thread.

So, myths #2 and #3 are officially debunked in light of the past year, which I think we should be grateful for. Cant believe so many people clung to those beliefs so vigorously!

#1 remains to be seen, but I am confident it will come to pass as well. There's just too much talent on this defense for it not to succeed.

Myth #1

Life after Ray Lewis

Many believe that L.a.R.L. is the football god's equivalent of damnation, sending our defense to the greatest depths of hell previously only resided by the lowest of the lower life forms (Detriot Lions, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Pacman Jones, etc.). Boys and girls, THIS IS A LIE. In a sport where an individual's success is so heavily reliant upon the talent supporting him, I propose to you that our defense made Ray Lewis the legend that he is, not the other way around. As we all know, Baltimore has always had an embarrassment of riches on the defensive side of the ball, and Ray has benefitted immensely from the presence of the other greats. Hence, Ray's public campaign to recruit guys like Haloti Ngata. Ray knows who butters his bread.

Myth #2

Myth #4

"Ozzie is god, yo!" "Ozzie is soo kewl!" "Ozzie is da man!"

Actually, not quite sure how this got on my list, because it is all true. Never question the wizardary of Oz.

There are several more newer myths developing, but they are so asinine that even the majority of the mouthbreathers attempting to read this thread can recognize them for what they are, so I shall not waste any more of my precious knowledge on the unwashed masses.

I think the loss of Ray would be big but its not like the Ravens have not been without half a defense before and still made things happen. In 08 we lost 2 CBs a strong safety and a NT. Thats 3/4 of the secondary and a NT that is the most important part of a 3-4 defense. They still had a good year. I think as long as superstars keep emerging we can take the heat of losing Ray Lewis.

How about the myth that this was "Rex Ryan's defense." before that it was Mike Nolan's, Marvin Lewis, Jack Del Rio..... exactly how many people should be able to take credit for this?
I like this suggestion.

I am appending this to the original post--

Myth #5
Life after Rex Ryan

It has been said by many that the Ravens defense will come up flat with the departure of Rex Ryan. Why? It is believed by these people that our defense owes it's success to Ryan's innovative and aggressive schemes, which came to be known as Organized Chaos due to Ryan's complex blitz schemes and exotic formations.

It is my belief that these people are either ignorant to the history and heritage of our franchise, unaware of how talented our players are, relatives of Ryan or just flat out stupid.

The greatest defense that this league has ever been brutalized by was a defense led by none other than Marvin Lewis, years before Ryan drew up his first blitz package.
Mike Nolan and Jack Del Rio also enjoyed success during their tenures here.
Greg Mattison made a fine debut, leading us to a #3 overall ranking, despite not having the weapons that Ryan enjoyed.

How many more DC do we need to go through before these people get the message? Will they ever realize that when people like Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Terrell Suggs, Haloti Ngata (or in the past, people such as Chris McAlister, Samari Rolle, Sam Adams, Goose, Boulware, Sharper, et al) are on the field, it does not matter much who is calling the shots?

Life after Rex Ryan is a utopia, just as Life before Rex Ryan was.
Consider this myth officially debunked.

Wow the Ray Lewis myth was horrible. It doesn't matter how much you add up the talent on the defensive side of the ball that man is in no way shape or form a man of a system. This guy is a very unique talent in this league better than anyone before him playing the same position with equal talent. To say that was a mouthful this may hold water with a lot of other players but Ray Lewis in the NFL has had a better career in my eyes then lets say Peyton Manning. Life after Ray better end up with Ray as a replacement for Mattison.

Not saying he is a product of the system, I'm just saying that without all the other greats playing beside him, his legend would not be near what it is today.
It's no secret that he publically campaigned to draft Ngata, because he wanted a big guy in front of him to eat up the blockers. Read between the lines: Ray doesn't shed blocks like he used to, nor is he nearly as quick as he once was.
Yet even though Ray isnt what he used to be, and hasnt been for quite some time, our defense is still annually a top 3 defense. Why do you suppose that is? Cant be all Ray Lewis, can it?

I don't know if you're right or wrong, my take is that if Ray was a creation of the players around him then perennially strong defenses would each have a player as good as Ray, the Jets Harris and Scott are good, but not Lewis good, and in 08 the best D had Farrior, again, no cigar.

Seems to me that this thread needs a revision of some sort, although I am not sure exactly what. There are so many off the wall things being said about Flacco that there is not a consensus complaint regarding our QB, just the general idea among a certain sect of fans that he is not shaping up to be our long term answer.

Let's end the madness.

Myth #6
Joe Flacco is not progressing and/or is not the long term solution at quarterback and/or Flacco should be benched for Bulger

It embarrasses me to even attempt to address this as a die hard Ravens fan.

You see, if you told me prior to week one of this season that in the first five weeks of the year, we would play 3 of last year's top 5 defenses, on the road, and play the league's #1 pass offense, and after those five games our record would be 4-1, I would be impressed.
If you told me that Flacco's solid performance was a huge factor in our week one win against the league's #1 defense, his domination the main factor in our week three win, his very impressive performance against the Steelers, including a last minute game winning TD in their house was the cause for our win and then his first half domination in week five that resulted in a 17-0 lead, which allowed us to cruise to an easy victory....after hearing all these things...I would say to myself, "Self, we are blessed with an amazing quarterback. Clearly he is growing into the quarterback we envisioned he would when we drafted him."

But apparently, these things aren't so obvious to an awful lot of people around these parts.

Is Flacco perfect or on the level of Manning/Brees yet? I'll answer that question with a question of my own...is he a player with a mere 2 1/4 seasons under his belt?

Does Flacco need to refine his game a bit more? I'll answer that question with a question of my own...is he a player with a mere 2 1/4 seasons under his belt?

Let me ask all these Flacco bashers a very simple question -- why don't you do intelligent and reasonable human beings a favor and just go jump in front of the bus that you feebly attempt to throw Flacco under? Please?

Thank you. It's getting hard to stand, but I know that it has to be a small minority of fans that feel this way. They're just really persistent.

Hmmm...time to revisit this oldie to add another one to the list.Myth #7Joe Flacco is average / will never be elite / will never accomplish X-goalhonestly, I won't even bother explaining how ridiculous these comments are.The only one I will bother with is whether or not he will be elite. In that regard, he is already widely regarded as a top 10 QB after just 3 seasons, with nothing but constant improvement in those three seasons. As already pointed out ad nauseum, his stats compare favorably to any 'elite' QB out there, other than perhaps Manning. Which is made even more impressive considering that all three seasons he has been here, our offense has been a run heavy one (we ran the ball more than passed each season). Will he ever be elite? Who knows. But to rule that possibilty out...well, you're probably a Colt McCoy fan or a relative of Troy Smith, so your opinion doesn't really matter anyway.

This is going to be one of those arguments that never seems to end isn't it? Even when Flacco proves himself, there will always be those critics for something or another. They'll probably stick around unless Joe throws like 7,000 yards, 100 TDs, 0 INTs in the regular season.

I'm not going to say that he'll be as good at his peak as Peyton or Brady, because they are the once in a generation, two of the best ever QBs to play the game. But that people are writing him off or claiming he's a perennial playoff choke artist is too far.

I believe that he'll continue to grow, quite likely to the point where he's considered elite, but it's up to him to prove it.
