What The Heck Is Up With The New Draft Order?

12 posts in this topic

instead of going based entirely on regular season standings they're now going based on regular season standings for all teams who missed the playoffs and then based on success in playoffs for teams who made it. that way it's completely fair. the team who just won the super bowl doesn't need to be drafting before a team who lost in the first round of the playoffs. A division champion shouldn't be able to draft before someone who didn't make the playoffs, etc.

Yeah i agree with it, i've always wondered why that wasn't the case anyway!! The vote was unanimous also so it seems like a good change IMO.

It makes alot of sense, but it's probably going to really hurt us down the road. We won two playoffs but since we only finished 11-5 we get a better pick than we would have with this new rule. Oh well...

I thought I read that the 2 teams that make the superbowl will still be pick 31 and 32....with the winner being the 32nd pick, respectively!

Am I mistaking??

Yeah the Superbowl Teams will still get 31st and 32nd pick as usual, the change is the Championship game runners up who will now get 29th and 30th, the Divisional game runners up will get 28th - 25th etc. And then it will go by record with the teams that missed the playoffs!!

You are not mistaken. The loser gets the 31st pick and Winner gets the 32nd. And the draft order, like someone said earlier, all 12 teams in the playoffs are the last 12 spots and also depends how far you make it in playoffs. For an example, eagles finished 9-6-1 and THIS year they are drafting #21, but under the new system they would be drafting 30th b/c they made the NFC championship game. Now for the Ravens, they were 11-5 and THIS year are drafting #26, but under the new system they would be #29.

So in a way, it is good that the new draft order isn't going to be used until 2010 because then the Ravens would drop 3 spots in the first round.

Not quite. We would get 30th pick and eagles the 29th, since our record was better thant the eagles. Ranking would be like this, as I understand it:

1. Superbowl-winner Draft-pick 32
2. Superbowl-runner-up Draft- pick 31
3. AFC/NFC-championship runner-up (with the best record compared to the other runner-up) Draft-pick 30
4. AFC/NFC-championship runner-up (with the worst record compared to the other runner-up) Draft-pick 29
5. Divisional-weekend loser with best record (of teams losing in divisional) Draft pick 28
6. Divisional-weekend loser with 2nd best record (of teams losing in divisional) Draft pick 27
7. Divisional-weekend loser with 3rd best record (of teams losing in divisional) Draft pick 26
8. Divisional-weekend loser with worst record (of teams losing in divisional) Draft pick 25
9. Wild-card loser with best record (of teams losing in wild-card) Draft pick 24
10. Wild-card loser with 2nd best record (of teams losing in wild-card) Draft pick 23
11. Wild-card loser with 3rd best record (of teams losing in wild-card) Draft pick 22
12. Wild-card loser with worst record (of teams losing in wild-card) Draft pick 21
13. Team with the best record, who didn't make playoffs. Draft-pick 20
14. Team with 2nd best record, who didn't make playoffs. Draft-pick 19
...
32. Team mwith the worst record (who offcourse DIDN'T make the playoffs;)) Draft-pick 1

The difference from before is, that making the playoffs with a worse record than a team that didn't make the playoffs, means you'll get one of the 12 lowest picks. Example: The chargers made the playoffs with a 8-8 record. This year they'll be picking 16th overall, by the old rules. The patriots didn't make the playoffs with a 11-5 record. The Patriots have the 21st overall pick. By the new draft order The Pats would choose 20th overall, but chargers would move down to 25th overall.

Hope that helps in explaining it ;)

my bad with that mistake... but yeah I understand the new order and everything, I'm just not sure if I like it. I guess making the playoffs is a bigger accomplishment then having a better regular season record by a game or 2 and not making the playoffs because you're in a diff conference.

We will see how it shapes up in the next few years and then make a decision if we like it or not...

any other thoughts?
