How Many Te's Are We Keeping

19 posts in this topic

We just signed LJ Smith

We have Heap, Sypniewski, and Jones

Where does that leave Wilcox? I would hate to see the first player to catch an TD from Flacco traded off already. Wilcox had some good starts for us and played well in the rotation. All that and his 83deg Blog. :)

NFL.com has him as UFA with TBD
TE FA Roster

And we list him under UFA on our roster:

So what is the word on Wilcox?

And
How many TE's do we usually roster?

I really think we keep Heap I never saw any proof the ravens were trying to trade him. But anyway I think we keep 3 and a half on the roster. We will have Heap, Smith, Sypniewski, and Jones. But since Jones could also play some linebacker he only counts as a half TE.

The question should be: How many Tight Ends do we need? And the answer to that question is 3.

LJ Smith isn't going anywhere so that's 1. Sypniewski is very affordable and pretty good so he stays, that's 2. Heap is entering the big $$ end of his contract. He will receive $6M this year alone. If we decide to draft a TE anywhere between rounds 1-4 then I think Heap is a goner. No way we can afford to keep 4 TEs on the roster. It would be a waste of roster space and cap space.

That's why I think Heap is going to get traded on draft day as trade leverage to help us maneuver up in the 1st round to select TE Brandon Pettigrew.

Or...maybe he'll be packaged in a deal for Anquan Boldin?

But I mean if you look at our current TEs, we have Todd Heap who is a passing TE converted to blocking TE. LJ Smith who is solely a receiving TE but he can occasionally block if needed to. Sypniewski is a blocking TE that has good enough hands to occasional make a catch. So between Smith and Sypniewski why do you need Todd Heap? Maybe cuz he can do it all at once but then again, so what?

I don't know, I just think the writing is on the wall with #86 and IMO the Ravens are going to move on without him. Heap and Harb had it out a couple times on the sideline last year so maybe the line has already been crossed?

yea after the signing of L.J. smith i think the ravens' thoughts on pettigrew died out. :( but i guess the ravens were looking for an "upgrade" at backup TE from wilcox, i guess. heap can still play at a high level, don't think ravens are looking for his replacement just yet.

Although Heap had some decent games blocking, he isn't a blocker and neither is L.J. Smith. I expect the team to keep Quinn Sypnewski(sp) and waive Wilcox.

Yup! lol. Wilcox is a great guy, though. So I wouldn't exactly be heartbroken if he came back, even though it wouldn't make much sense to carry more than three tight ends.

I think Wilcox is gone because he has been injured his whole career. The only time he is useful is for the sunday night show before the half-time show and take pics at the retirement homes.
