Source: Ravens ask NFL for no prime-time game in Pittsburgh

By Jamison Hensley | jamison.hensley@baltsun.com

Contrary to rumors, the Ravens are not expected to kick off the 2009 regular season at the defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers in the Thursday night season opener.

As part of their scheduling requests to the league, the Ravens asked not to play a prime-time game at Heinz Field this season, a team official told The Baltimore Sun.

The Ravens have played a nationally televised game at Pittsburgh for three of the past four seasons, including the past two years. The Ravens have never won a prime-time game at Pittsburgh, losing all four times.

It has become tradition that the defending Super Bowl champion opens the NFL season with a nationally televised game at home. There were rumors that the league would begin with Ravens-Steelers, a rematch of the AFC championship game.

The first games of the 2009 season -- the prime-time games for Thursday, Sunday and Monday nights -- are expected to be announced next week at the NFL owners meetings. The rest of the regular-season schedule is usually announced in April.

I for one am happy and would rather play at home week one against an easier opponent. We don't need to play in pitts week one, when they have their superbowl celebration.

The Steelers. Lol, probably someone like the Browns will get stuck with it.

Lol, i laughed so hard. I don't wish that on anyone. I bet it will be the titans. If they played the Jets this year I would say move the Jets to that game since they want to be us.

In essence, its similar to the whole Ravens at Dallas deal.. Dallas requested a game against an "easy" opponent to ensure a victory as the last game in their stadium.. But nobody is calling them chicken.. Quite frankly, i dont blame the Ravens, im not saying we would lose the game against Pitt, but id much rather play an easy opponent and start off 1-0 instead of starting the season off against a tough opponent with the possibility of starting 0-1..

I know we are not lucky on prime time against the steelers but so what let the players play dammit. It will be a hell of a win.

It wouldn't make much sense for the Ravens to open their season with another loss. We're one of the better team in the league, but playing in Pittsburgh at night is just a death trap.

Why don't they come to our place once in a while on Monday night?

If the Ravens don't want us then I'd like to play the Titans at Heinz.

Why can't Pitt play here? It does look strange all the Prime Time games are there. No prime Time games would be fine too

I wouldn't be against opening in WK 1 in PIT on a Monday night and then closing in WK 17 in BAL on a Monday night. It's always a great game.
