Wes Welker

20 posts in this topic

I hear all this talk about trying to get Boldin but why not try to get Welker, New England has just signed 2 new receivers to their roster, Lewis and Galloway ( I agree Welker is better but they got depth), I think getting Welker would be more likely then Boldin and probably cheaper. I don't remember the last time Welker was injuried and I believe he took a nasty hit this year and just shook it off and didn't hold any grudge (from what I read this year, I think it was in the Steeler's game if they played each other). As I see Welker is a possession receiver but as long as we get the 1st downs they will eventually end up in the endzone. Not sure what we would have to give up to get this trade thou.
What does everyone think?

Wes Welker just came off of one of his best years in his career. He was probably the most productive reciever on that team last year. I don't think the Patriots would give him up. Not cheap, anyways.

I love Welker's style of play but i don't think he really fits into this system. What i mean is, the Patriots used multiple-receiver formations and are evidently a pass first offense. This allowed Welker to draw a lot of mismatches being placed in 1 on 1's or against lower rated corners and allow his acceleration to create YAC, especially with Moss attracting deep threat attention on the other side. I don't think he would be as effective in our run-first offense.

That hit was by Ryan Clark btw...uhuh, the same Ryan Clark hit Mcgahee i think.

I agree, i also don't think Welker is as expendable as some might think, despite their WR depth. Like i previously said, the Pats use a lot of multiple receiver formations so they have need for all their WR's and would like as much depth as possible, especially with players of Welker's calibre.

Wes Welkers is just a slot machine and a YAC professional. Catch the 3 yard slant and try to use quickness to get away. I really doubt he is any better than that.

Welker was placed in the #2 slot last season and had one of the best performances of his career, so I wouldn't say that he's simply a slot receiver. Even with Randy Moss there to draw double-teams, Welker still had to get yards after the catch, so being a so-called "YAC professional" isn't necessarily a bad thing, neither; there's plenty of receivers who struggle to get YAC, let alone make consistent grabs.

That is not a bad thing at all. I would take Welker on the Ravens anyday if he is playing the slot, but if he is the number 2 guy he will not do well here. No team is going to double Mason because he is not going to run away from no one.

Wes is the Pats passing game's bread and butter, he's not going anywhere, probably for as long as he is in the league. Why another receiver trade thread?....

We'd have the shortest WR corp in the league, imagine how much Flacco is going to love those red zone throws if that happened. Which it wont. Ever.

He would be a great addition... didnt hear many people talk about him... he would be a good fit for the type of offensive plays we run, short slant routes and curls.
Isnt Welker a tiny little guy, and dont we need a tall receiver?
He's 5'9, 185 lbs. He's only 27, fast and sure-handed. He caught 111 passes, 1165 yds in '08, and 112/1175 in '07. He's an excellent possession reciever, only averaging 10.5 yds/catch.

Having said that, the Ravens will not be trading for Welker - he's NE's most reliable reciever, and Brady will NEED Welker when he returns this year. He would cost a 1st rounder +, not to mention that the Ravens only have $2 million left under the salary cap...

NE won't let him go, guaranteed.
welkers just a product of the system. hes not that good.
This is the most abused term in our forum. Anyone who has become a great play maker has been labeled a "product of the system." Welker has an explosiveness that allows him to get open in short to medium routes. Not to mention he has great natural hands. He is not a product of the system, he's a major instrument in that system and would be sorely missed.

Get the poor-man's version of Welker, Greg Camarillo! He's the guy that got the OT TD two seasons ago to give Miami their only win of the season at our expense. But he's a very under-rated player

Welker is a top tier receiver in the nfl dispite his being overlooked, great quickness and toughness and he navigates over the middle effortlessly. Love to have him most likely won't happen tho =(.

Well said. Welker is an absolute beast, if put in the right lineup. He would be nothing here, especially with the recent signings.
