Indeed. You should average out the numbers to see what's up.
Man, those averages are crazy. That means that, in that same span, the difference between the Ravens and Steelers is 12.2 ypg (or a little bit over one first down per game, since a first down is 10 yards), and 0.80 of a point! AN EIGHTH OF A FREAKING POINT!

That explains why the two defenses are such mirror images of one another. It's crazy...
We were 30th overall in D at one time?

Oh wow, I never thought that was possible.
We were also the old Browns in 1996. All offense, no defense. The complete opposite of what the Ravens would eventually become.

That's why Vinny Testaverde is considered by most long-time fans to be the greatest Ravens QB in franchise history thus far. On the same token, because of the team's history of defense shortly thereafter, people forget that the Ravens weren't always a defensive team. The Ravens only became a defensive team because of the physicality of the division; the theory was, in a division filled with great defenses, you needed a good defense in your own right in order to compete. And in a throwback to old-school football, the team that was able to out-muscle the other team, would usually win.

It's understandable that you wouldn't remember the defense being ranked so low, though; you're a young(er) fan. I certainly didn't know until I went back and did more research on the team on my own.

Thats cool. Now why dont you compare the offenses? I think the discrepency between the two defenses will be made up there. Thats the problem with numbers there is always some way to screw with them to make them say what you want them to say.

yea we put up very similar numbers

what also impresses me is that in 13 years we put up 10 combined first or second place finishes

technically wouldn't johnny unitas be the greatest baltimore QB.... or do we abandon our "baltimore colts" history when they left?

The Colts took the franchise records with them on the Mayflower trucks according to official NFL stats. We however left the Browns their stats, colors and team history when the Ravens were born.

Note that I said Testaverde was the greatest Ravens QB in franchise history, not Baltimore QB.

In 3 years we went from 30 to number 2. Thats amazing. We were the DoDo Browns as stated, MJ and Alexander and Vinny hell..even byner were our offense. Defense was SAD.

Oh my gosh Prophet, if you hadn't posted those points, I'm not sure I would have gotten any sleep.
Lol jk. Seriously though, it was intersting to see just what the Ravens defense had to overcome in order to win the superbowl. I had heard the offense was nearly Lion-worthy.

Damn, the Steelers really haven't had an "off year" since at least before 1996...

The Ravens have had more impressive individual performances, and the two teams are ridiculously evenly matched since around 1998, but I never quite fathomed how good Pittsburgh has been for an extended period of time.

I don't really respect much about the organization, or anything associated with it in general, but the Steelers are a damn good football team on a consistent basis, that's for sure.

Thanks, Prophet, that was actually a cool post.

If u do the average for both teams we rank as the number 10 overall defense for the past 13 years and they average out to number 5 overall

Don't forget that for the first part of those 13 years we were an expansion team while the Steelers had been around for decades by that point. That kind of affects our average; but even so, we've done pretty well. :)

I would moreoso do the last decade rather than when we were still building our D..though we still did pretty good overall

Actually we never were an expansion team. We had the Browns players, several of whom were pretty good.

Well, it's probably better to start using data for the Ravens after 1998/1999, but the Ravens weren't really an expansion team...
