We've Only Got $2 Million In Cap Space Left!

17 posts in this topic

And according to Jamison Hensley from The Baltimore Sun thats only after saving over $700,000 by releasing Nick Greisen.

This clearly means some guys are gonna be released. Namely Samari Rolle and possibly Willie Anderson. Two million wouldn't even be enough to sign our rookie draft class let alone any new deals in free agency that Ozzie has hinted at. I had no idea we were this tight. Maybe we'll see some contracts getting restructured too.

I don't think that cap figure includes the amount set aside for rookie contracts. And that's not to mention the strong possibility of contract restructuring and other cap moves that normally happen around the time of the draft.

This isn't panic mode, basically. And it's not like we're cap-strapped every year like the Washington Redskins.

I have never heard of this before. The cap space is the cap space. I don't see how or why teams would divide it up like that.

True. I believe we already set aside the draft class money. You can pretty much guestimate what you will need to sign your picks based on last yrs draft. Unless the #1 pick gets stupid money from Detroit (Aaron Curry).

But then why haven't I ever heard it described that way? I'm not arguing with you because I can see from a finance standpoint the need to set aside that money. I've just always taken when someone says this team has $40 million is cap space that that is what they have and not actually $45 million if you factor in the draft.

I have no idea how this cap space works, so let me throw this out there...

Wasn't that why Tennessee traded us McNair? Because his cap hit was so high and they needed to make room to sign their rookies?

I think when you hear people say we have so much cap space, the figure is calculated after the $30 mil or so that is reserved for both the draft and regular season. In case a player goes down mid season and we have to sign someone else.

The NFL does it. The rookies have a seperate salary cap until the season starts to ensure that each team has the money avaible to sign their draft picks. How much the team gets depends on how many picks and what picks they have. So, for instance the Lions, with the number 1 overall pick and 3 extra draft picks, will probably get the most. I dont have a link but they mention during the draft almost every year.

Ok that makes sense. Thanks.

Just a point of clarity: the rookie salary pool is carved out of each team's cap. The team has to set aside a certain portion of their cap space to sign the rookies. The rookie contracts can not exceed X dollars. Thus, there's a cap within the cap.

Okay, maybe that wasn't so clear after all. :D

For example: if the salary cap is $150 million and the team's rookie cap is $10 million, then there's only $140 million to sign other players.

we have about 6 mil after we cut rolle and when we extend suggs well have another 4 mil or so so we are about 10 mil under after we cut rolle and extend suggs, enough to sign Torry Holt!

There is a "Rookie Pool" for the salary cap. I don't know all of the details, but I know there is a portion of the cap dedicated to the rookie signings.
