I wish Jim the best of luck. He did great for us but we have the personnel to fill the hole he leaves for a cheaper price. Thanks Jim!
Wow, Jim Leonhard just keeps getting screwed over at every turn. The Bills screwed him over by not showing their appreciation for his services by locking him up with a new contract. The Ravens kinda screwed him over by accepting the fact that he'll be gone, instead of giving him a long-term contract. The Jets screwed him over by saying there's no guarantee he'll start, in spite of how well he's played the past two seasons for Buffalo and Baltimore.

I wouldn't mind having him back, but I could see him going to the Eagles -- only to be benched because they, for some godawful reason, can't identify talent like they used to.
Why would the Ravens give him a long term contract when we drafted 2 safeties and the starter is coming back?
Any word on any teams that have shown interest in Boller?
apparently the Jets because they have interest in all our players.

Jim was a heck of a ball player, good punt returner, and made some great plays for us. We have players at safety and with Landry coming back, it just seemed like he was going to be odd man out, and Rex liked him alot, so I think it was pretty obvious he was going to the Jets. I wish him the best of luck!

It would not be good for him personally if the ravens would sign him, because then he would not have a starting job either.

I would be happy for him if some team picks him up as a starter, he deserves that. Its a bit sad though, because he gets pushed around like that.

Because there's no guarantee that Dawan Landry will be able to return to form, and the jury is still out on the two backup safeties. Therefore, it'd be wise if the team would've been able to sign Leonhard to a moderate contract (somewhere in the avenue of 16mil?) and kept him as an insurance policy.

Besides, the safety job opposite Ed Reed will likely be an open competition, and Leonhard could always be used to boost the return game if he loses the starting job to the other three safeties.

In other words, it's always better to be safe than sorry. Though, it's a moot point now that Leonhard is a Jet.
well hopefull we can resign dawan landry, then we dont need to wrorry about leonhard
We already placed a low tender on Landry, so the signing of Leonhard to the Jets will probably encourage the Ravens to push for a slight contract extension.
I thought they released Coles not restructured his contract.
Not exactly. Technically, they restructured his contract allowing Laveranues Coles to void the final year of his contract and become a Free Agent.

The reason the Jets did this over releasing him was that Coles had 6 million guaranteed salary for next year, by Coles voiding that and becoming a Free Agent the Jets were no longer on the hook to pay that salary, whereas if they released him they would have been. Of course, by voiding his contract year and passing up on 6 million guaranteed Coles is gambling that he can do better then that in Free Agency. I guess we shall see.

In the end, he's a Free Agent, just this way the Jets aren't on the hook for the formerly guaranteed money.

I don't think it was really a "bad move" We still have Landry, well.. HOPEFULLY. Now if Oz let's Landry go.. then somethings up!

No it's not a bad move...it just stinks to watch a guy give it his all this season to be left out like that. My personal feelings on this aside, good luck Jim...hope all goes well in NY. Thanks for the great season.

It wasn't a bad move, it was a necessary move.

What is with people criticizing Ozzie lately? He's doing the best job he can given the situation.

You aren't smarter than Ozzie, so lay off him and go play your Madden.

Leonard was a free agent, free agent means that you are free to play for any team that will give you a contract! Free!

Leonhard was a much, much better player than I expected when he came to the Ravens. Smart, tough, quick. He was great while he was here. I wish him the best. Can't feel bad about him leaving when the team clearly wasn't interested in keeping him.

My favorite memory of him was when he took down Brandon Jacobs who was in the open at full speed and attempted his usual devastating truckstick, Leonhard just jumped on him and drove him to the ground.

When Reed tried that Jacobs kept running and threw him over his other side with one arm.

Still, Jimmy old friend, you will never be half as good as Reed.

Rotoworld: Jim Leonhard's three-year deal with the Jets is worth $6 million and includes a $1 million signing bonus.
Leonhard is expected to start, but this is third safety money. Still, if Leonhard's smallish build doesn't hold up in 2009, the Jets could put him in a backup/special teams role and not be overpaying. Good deal for New York.

I thought we let him go cuz he wanted too much? you're telling me we couldnt match $2million per year for arguably one of the best playmakers on defense and special teams from last year?????

I think we let him go because he didnt want to be here. He would have had to compete with Landry, Zibby, and Haruki.

Seriously, he shouldnt have been competing with anyone but landry, and even if landry won, hed be #2 and playing at least 40% of the snaps as well as returning.
