Trade Out Of The First Round?

12 posts in this topic

I know many have mentioned it in other threads, along with myself, but I haven't heard anybody really elaborate on this thought and thought it is worth talking about.

It seems that our position(26th overall) could cause us problems with grabbing the players that we are targeting. I understand that Ozzie and the FO will typically go BPA if the players that have been targeted don't make it to us, but why not just draft out of the first? We would land more picks for the first day and the players we do draft wouldn't break the bank like 1st rounders have done recently. I don't follow college football like I do the NFL, but it seems that there is an abundance of depth in the three areas of need for us this year(WR, CB, OL), and besides how much difference in talent is it from the 26th overall to the second round?

This all depends how the players fall this year and I'm hoping that somebody falls to us that Ozzie and company are targeting but I would hate for a reach in the first when we could get more value for the dollar by trading out.

It depends on how our board looks. We've got to many needs and this draft class is kind of deep at the positions that we need, so I dont see it happening.

Good point..I was looking at it the other way, meaning that the guys that we're targeting in the first may not be there but there are plenty of guys to grab later on with the depth in the areas of need. Besides, how much difference in talent is there between our 26th overall pick and the picks we would pick up for the 2nd round?

We could trade with the Patriots for one or maybe even 2 of the 3 second round draft picks they have. The 2nd (34th) they receive from the Rams in the Cassel trade + 3rd would be nice. We could trade with the Cowboys for their 2nd and 3rd since they have the Browns 3rd round draft pick (#5). Remember they traded their 1st to Detroit so they might be interested.

There are a number of teams we could trade with to get extra 2nd and 3rd picks. We could also trade up with Detroit or Philly since they both have 2 1st round picks.

This years draft is going to be fun.

No, the only way you trade your first round pick away is if you're getting a young playmaker in trade from another team.

Yea, but they were talking about picking from the second round... Not trading back up for the spot.

I understand that, but the point i was making was that we traded our first round pick and didnt recieve a proven playmaker, we went on and took our chances int he draft and it payed off.. We've got a great front office that does a hell of a job evaluating players.. I wouldnt be opposed to us trading out of the first round.. It wouldnt surprise me if we found a late round gem..

trading with the patriots is bad luck, check out what happened to us the last couple times we traded with them.
