Top 2009 Draft Prospects: Cb

22 posts in this topic

Well Here are my Top 9 picks/prospects at the CornerBack position of the 2009 NFL draft, lets take a wild gander at this here list shall we? Now all of which are very reliable picks for any team though some may need to work on a few things more so than others, this list is composed of some very good athletes and some of which i think will be difference makers for their resoective teams (whom ever that may be) i will be adding more as time goes on so the list will grow... but heres a look at what ive been working on for the past few weeks

Note: this list was compiled over the course of the past 3-4 weeks or so, it doesnt inlcude the info and analysis of when they worked out at the combine, a majority of this list/info gathered was collected before the combine.

Malcolm Jenkins

Height: 6'1"

Weight: 201 lbs

School: Ohio State

Advantages: If there was ever a stand out player at the Cornerback position over the course of the last season or two, it would have to be Malcolm Jenkins, this kid does it all at the position and is one to which people cant talk about the CB position in collegiate football without (at the very LEAST) mention this phenominal cornerbacks name. Coming out of High School and as a freshman in 2005, Jenkins had worked his way into the corner rotation, and near the end of his rookie Collegiate season, finished the with 37 tackles. He then worked even harder and became a starter a year later catching everyone's eye with his outstanding playmaking ability and overall athletism in which enabled him to earn All Big 10 honors after posting a career high 55 tackles, 4.5 for loss, and 4 interceptions for the season, as a end result as a Sophmore. Last year, as a Junior, Jenkins had racked up 47 tackles, 5 of which was for loss of yardage, and 4 interceptions while earning various All America honors, and earning his second All Big 10 1st selection. But Mr Jenkins wasnt finished just yet, oh no, He then went on and closed out his career winning the Thorpe Award while tallying 54 tackles, 3.5 for loss, one sack and three interceptions. He really had gotten himself recognized for his talent and skill out there on the field, he has excellent size, athleticism, and speed, which enable him to showcase why exactly on many levels, he was the TOP cornerback in College football. Using his size, strength, and aggressiveness made him an un-stoppable force against the run and his natural athleticism and speed make him a special prospect for teams looking for an upgrade at the Cornerback position. He shows the ability to turn and run with just about any receiver in the country and with all his physical skills, toughness, and ball skills you

Coye Francies is probably my favorite cornerback for us.. Hes got great size at 6'1" and his fastest 40 time is a 4.38.. Definately a guy we can possibly go after in the second or third round.. I dont see him slipping into the fourth.

I saw Butler on First Take, and he seems to have the attitude of a great corner. I never really heard of him before that, but he has me believing in him. I think he would be well worth a late 3rd or 4th pick

very nice evaluation, most of which I agree to
Dj Moore is going in the first round (for the most part)
the scouts usually have him as the 3rd or 4th corner in the draft

I totally agree with you on Butler and I think we should definitely look at him in the 3rd round if he is there.

You forgot some other good prospects.

Mike Mickens
Pros: A true ballhawk with great hands that can make up a lot of ground quickly in coverage and has that extra gear to help him take INTs to the house, as he did this twice last season and once this year.
Cons: He needs to add bulk.

Jairus Byrd
Pros: Shuts down the pass and the run by playing extremely agressive. He has played in every variation of man coverage and uses his size and strength to overpower opposing receivers. He is a solid tackler who wraps up the ball carrier.
Cons: He might not have ideal speed to be elite in the NFL. He is sometimes too agressive.

Asher Allen
Pros: Allen posseses the speed to keep up with WRs on the next level running a low 4.4 40 yards dash. He is an intense athlete that makes his presence known on defense and special teams. He has the vision to return INTS, PRs, or KRs the distance, like the time he returned a kickoff 82 yards for a TD against KU in 2007.
Cons: Just a bit undersized at 5'10". Only adequate speed. He is sometimes overly agressive and bites on double moved.

Mark Parsons wasn't even invited to the combine WTH??

Butler won't make it out of the 2nd if he doesn't get drafted in the 1st.

You've obviously never heard of Darius Butler because he's supposed to go in the 1st-2nd round. Mayock has him top 3 CBs.
Fun Fact: He's also Willis McGahee's cousin.
I question his tackling ability and if he can bring down a big running back.

I don't see Darius Butler going in the first round of the draft. I think he will definitely go in the second. By the way RavensIQ I was just saying that if he is there in the 3rd I would definitely take him. I didn't mean that he would be there and thats why I said if he is there.
pat kirwin has butler goin' to us in the 1st round on his mock draft
Either Kirwin knows something no one else knows or he doesn't know football. Butler is good but not only does he have the team taking Butler instead of Moore or Smith but he doesn't even have Smith or Moore in the 1st round. Butler measured in over 5'10 and he has 40+ inch vertical but is he better than Moore and Smith? I don't know...

Here is a scouting report on Francies by PFW. http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/NFLDr.../rock022409.htm

I was all for taking a CB in the 1st round, heck I was even down for trading up to get Vonte Davis. The Saints might take him or a LB and the Lions might be down for a trade to pick up more draft picks to help them rebuild. Now, with all the CB free agents and possible guys that could be released (Shawn Springs, Deangelo Hall), I think we will find our #1 CB as well as some great guys for depth in the Free Agency. We should still draft one for depth, but since the most of the elite CBs will be gone by the 20th pick we can go with another position (WR, LB, DE). Unless you have the skill set of DRC or Antoine Cason, most CBs sit for 1 or 2 years before playing. We have Chad Johnson, Hines Ward, Braylon Edwards, and Santonio Holmes in our division and it might not be wise to throw a rookie to the wolves right away.

So I'm leaning to getting most of our CBs in FA, draft a WR in 1st round (Nicks, DHB, Britt), CB in 2nd, DE in 3rd, T/G in 4th. Throw a TE somewhere in there too for good measure.

I completely agree. I think Butler will be the most successful pro out of this year's draft. I really hope we can pick him up in the second round by trading up or something; that would be a big time steal. Butler has great speed, realy fluid hips, great instincts for the ball, and has decent size at 5-11. He's a big time sleeper.
I dont like Vontae Davis or Macho Harris for us, they seem like workout warrior/zone guys.
Vontae has ALL the physical tools but so does his brother and look at how he's panned out.

Yeah I agree with you, Vontae seems too stiff for me. I'm not a big fan of his.

I have read in some place that he has fluid hips but he looked like a mini-LB at the Combine. I wouldn't be angry if the Ravens got him but he seems like a very risky pick. There have been so many corners with all the physical tools who just never put it together.

I dont like Vontae, Vernon Davis was the same, huge weightroom numbers and passes the eyeball test but isnt a football player. Potential is the only reason hes rated so high.
