Greatest Defense Of The Superbowl Era

6 posts in this topic

The 1973 Steelers featured the greatest shutdown pass defense of the Super Bowl Era, allowing quarterbacks that year a combined 33.1 passer rating.

How good is that? Consider that if every pass their opponents threw that year fell incomplete, they would have had a Defensive Passer Rating of 39.6.

in Superbowl IX (1975)

Pittsburgh's defense permitted Minnesota only 119 yards total offense, including a Super Bowl low of 17 rushing yards.

And Then of course there are the constant top place finishes in defense throughout the years

This actually reminds me of an article I had planned to write for a while now about the greatest defenses of the Super Bowl era.

And to be perfectly honest, I was planning a tie at the top spot. I'll leave the rest up to speculation...

oh i agree other teams have claims to the top spot(Ravens,Bears) but im a steelers fan lol so in my eyes the tie breaker goes to the steelers.....but the word greatest is an opinion word....so if you can make a logical arguement as to why your team is the best.....then they are in your eyes..ands thats ok i think
well they can have the best superbowl d....but we have the Best defensive year ever
well holding quarterbacks on average to a 33.1 rating is a legendary year as well .......honestly....the ravens and the steelers are the only ones with consistant elite level D

Other teams have a year or two where they can point and say...."see that our D is the best".......we have those years too, but the difference is we have an elite level D almost every year.

I think thats a great accomplishment for that era but as far as GOAT defense I have to give the nod to the D's of this era, its hard to be a consistantly elite defensive team because the game caters more to the offensive side of the ball and I'll assume that the D's today are doing it without the roids, until we find out otherwise of course.
