Supplemental Draft Picks

10 posts in this topic

Since theres a good chance we will lose at least one of our pro bowl linebackers to free agency I think its good to get some idea what we can expect in terms of compensation from the league. I admit to knowing little about this process. The picks may even be awarded the following year and therefore have no bearing on the upcoming draft but if anyone knows more about the process I would like to know. Thanks.

The picks are awarded before the draft for losses in the prior year's free agency. The way the picks are awarded is a big secret (I'm not kidding) but is based on the "value" of the free agents lost.

If we lose any big free agents this year, then we will be awarded supplemental picks next year (2010), maybe.

I thought we wouldn't see the picks until next year. That stinks. I also can't remember any of the picks being higher than a 4th rounder. We've done great things with late picks before but I guess we shouldn't expect much. We wouldn't even be able to draft him until next year then it would take a few years at least for him to make much of an impact.

interesting...just proves how important coaching is to develop players so you can can get good picks when you lose players.
But that means this "supplemental draft" is based on perception.....and i think some teams aka the squeelers benefit from it.
It's a conspiracy.....

You're right I meant compensatory. My bad. I don't understand the supplemental draft either but I won't get into that. haha.

Got you. :)

The only thing that really matters is the size of the contract. Let's say 5 players hit free agency:

The first one signs a 7 year deal worth 50 mil. (7.1 mil. per year)
The second one signs a 5 year deal worth 25 mil. (5 mil. per year)
The third one signs a 6 year deal worth 40 mil. (6.7 mil. per year)
The fourth one signs a 4 year deal worth 15 mil. (3.8 mil. per year)
The fifth one signs a 4 year deal worth 5 mil. (1.3 mil. per year)

Here's what the compensation would look like:

3rd round pick
Player #1, Player #3

4th round pick
Player #2

5th round pick
- (Gap is too big between player #3 and player #4)

6th round pick
Player #4

7th round pick
Player #5

The NFL also considers post season awards (Pro Bowl, MVP etc.), playing time, whether the player was hurt a lot or not, whether he's a starter or just a backup and all that stuff. But the only thing that really matters is how much money does a player average per year. A guy called "AdamJT" does this every year before the picks are being rewarded, and he's basically 90-95% right with his predictions as to which team is being rewarded what pick exactly (and for which player). You can google him, he's probably going to do it again this season. Although it doesn't look like we'll get anything this year because we didn't lose any good players last season (i can't think of any right now).
