Merged 2009 Hof Theads

Sorry if this is old news, but long-time NFL Owner (Browns and our Ravens of course) and visionary, Art Modell, was once again denied access to the NFL Hall of Fame... this really sucks, and for these morons to deny Art yet again is shameful

I don't really know how the HOF voting works, but I know they can send a max of 7, but they sent 6 this year. So they thought Art (or any other hall of fame candidate) was less deserving than absolutely no one?

Exactly, it's an absolute crock, and not enough people (aka ESPN) talk about this travesty. If they did, maybe the voters would be more swayed

I think they can only send one front office person to the hall per year. This year, they chose Ralph Wilson.

In a sense, Wilson may be more deserving because he was one of the key figures in the AFL-NFL merger, and was instrumental in developing the concept of revenue sharing that exists today.

Wilson has been in same situation as Art, and yeah I think you're right about the number of non-players being entered, but regardless, Art is loooooooooooong overdue as was Wilson prior to today

I think that, bottom line, part of it also had to do with getting positive PR for the Buffalo Bills, especially with their fans who feel that they've been snubbed by having their team play "home" games in Toronto.

That's not to say that Ralph Wilson isn't deserving of induction, but it'd be ignorant to deny that the shaky situation with today's Bills and the city of Buffalo didn't play a part in it with the voters.

Plus, when you compare the two legacies, if you have to pick one over the other in terms of who had the most noticeable impact on today's NFL, Ralph Wilson would still win out because of his contributions to the financial side of the game. While Art Modell was a pioneer in the field of marketing the game and securing television contracts, Wilson's revenue sharing concept is what drives the league today, and had Wilson not kept the AFL afloat, there'd be no Super Bowl today since the AFL-NFL merger was largely inspired by the success of the big game.

Art is still being looked down upon for taking the team out of Cleveland. But Baltimore deserved a team since it was stolen overnight from you before. I'm glad Baltimore and Cleveland both have teams again. Well, Baltimore has one. the Browns are the Browns

I agree. Baltimore still gets blamed for "stealing" the Browns and Modell is still vilified for it. Somehow, Indianapolis and fingursay got a bye. I know I'm biased, but it should be the other way around since, even though the original Browns left, Cleveland got to keep the name and colors and stats, so, even though they went a few years without a team, it's just like they have their old team again. With Baltimore, we got shafted all around. Still, I like the Ravens and their colors... just wish we could have the Baltimore Colts stats.

Art wasn't even a finalist so I knew he wasn't getting in. But I can't Believe Sharpe didn't make it and Chris Carter snubbed a 2nd time.

One of the main reasons Art left Cleveland, if not the MAIN reason, was that they didn't want to build a new stadium! Can you blame him?

I don't see it as a big deal for this very reason. If the HOF was a reputable entity Art should already be in there, as it is he isn't and probably won't be until the day after he dies. Art Monk should have been a first ballet HOFmer but it took him 8 years. In my opinion all of the HOF's are a joke and I would never spend a single penny of my money or a single second of my time to visit either of them.

That is very true. I always chuckle when I see Ravens fans bragging up Woodson. I will agree that he was a good contributor during a very special time in the Ravens organization. But there is a difference between being a decent safety on a great defense for a few years and being the best shutdown corner and a top punt returner in the league for a decade. He was a professional athlete doing his job for the 49ers, Cowboys, Ravens and Raiders.

Rod Woodson will always be a Steeler at heart as evidenced by his presentation of the AFC Championship trophy to Dan Rooney.

I agree that many players that have moved on to another team still hold their original team [or the team that they played with the most years or whatever other reason] closest to their hearts. That doesn't mean that the other teams that he played for can't be proud and happy for his accomplishments or proud of what he did for that team. I have no doubt that the Steelers hold that special place in Woodson's heart, but I think he also has some love for the Ravens - as they do for him.

Good job, Ron!

Let's put it this way, Rod was a Raven when it mattered ;)

I think they could've made a case for Cris Carter over Derrick Thomas, but I think they felt that Thomas needed to get in before he was forgotten due to his untimely passing a few years ago. So you have to believe there was a sympathy factor there for his family.

But he's going into the HOF as a Steeler so he's a Steeler. He even said so himself that he's a Steeler and wants to be in HOF as a Steeler.
