Why Are Pro Athletes So Greedy?

76 posts in this topic

This is pretty funny. We are brought up in a society that flashes money, big house, nice cars, stupid toys and pricey vacations. With all the shows on tv....cribs, etrue hollywood, faboulus life of blah, we get to see what its like to have that kind of money. Spending 10Grand a night to stay at a resort? if you have the money why not....

But.....im a sports fan of course. I played sports in highschool and did above average, averaging about 30pts a game in basketball, but colleges didnt seem too interested in a 5'8 white point gaurd, lol. That being said, i would easily play for the leage minumum and be happy, you have to really wonder, guys that make 10 million a year....what do they do with their money. I mean, someone stated they could retire with 20 million and be ok...are you serious, i could make a million last the rest of my life, not hard.

It all comes down to....."well im better than him, i should make more money"....agreed
Im not gonna point fingers at anybody because it doesnt matter, if the money is there the players will go after.

Its just funny to me...You have players making crazy amount of money (all sports), hundred million dollar contracts...bla bla bla...But yet we are in a recession, glad our priorities are straight

Sometimes it's abiout where they want to live though. Say a guy like Ed REED, Lewis,Mcgahee get offers from Miami or tampa or Jax for alittle more money they might want to go back to where they played college of grew up plus you have to think about taxes and scenery/climate. This is there job, if your current job pays you say 50,000 a year and another company comes along and says they'll pay you 150,000 a year but you have to move , what are you going to take. While you'd like to see guys finish careers with the teams they've played great for the money they make now have to last them the rest of thier lives.

Why? You mean they can't get a job after their NFL career is over?

Willis McGahee sure as hell won't. Lewis will get one in pretty much any aspect of football, and Reed will be a coach.

Wouldn't have to be in the NFL, he could get a job wherever.

And honestly, if these guys have any sense at all, they'll be investing the money their making now into their own (or at least someone else's) businesses, or whatever else would be appropriate for them.

Or even if they just let it sit idle in a savings account...what is 3% of $1M (of course, I'm assuming they at least had the self control to set aside $1M)?
$30,000 every quarter just off interest alone. That's $120,000 the first year, just for letting your money sit in the bank. And it get's higher and higher each year, since that money accumalates (unless of course they're living off that $120k--I'm sure they can get by on that).

This point has been raised and batted down several times. Can this please be the last? THOUSANDS are much less than MILLIONS. The comparison is bogus.

.... .....

30 points a game in high school Basketball is way above average.. Be for real, either you played on a church team or you have a really bad memory. There's not many pro basketball players who averages 30 points a game in COLLEGE let alone High school.

When you make $8M a year, you're not going to have payments to make since you own everything you have; unless you're one of those dips who make $50k a year and live in a $800,000 house. All you're going to have to worry about paying is very basic things, like taxes and upkeep, etc...

Besides, was just giving that as an example. You'd be a fool if you made millions and did absolutely nothing with it other than let it sit in some savings account. Even if you did the minimum and just opened a few MMA with that $1M I assumed you put aside, that's a crapload of money you're making doing absolutely nothing.

yes very true thats why players need to surround themselves with good people. I doubt Adam Jones has any money saved up and I know he doesnt have his degree.

lol! Wow, and all this time we've been bashing the poor guy. Here he is putting under-priviledged women through college, and we give him hell for it! Poor, misunderstood Pacnuts!

Greed is one of the primary foundations of our society. I can't (and you shouldn't) fault Ray or any other player for getting the most money he can for his own benefit and for that of his kids.

I think you'll find that, at this point, WINNING is probably as important to Ray as money.

Would he take an extra 10m to go play in Detroit or Cleveland?

I very much doubt it.
