Updated: Flacco Wins Diet Pepsi Roy Award

Wasn't this Pepsi award voted on by the fans? Online?

I don't want people thinking that the same AP writers who didn't even acknowledge Joe are now lauding him for his postseason performance...

It was voted by the fans...regardless was cool that he won something voted for by the fans of the NFL as a whole...and not just us :)

But isn't the AP full of writers we regularly criticize for being brainless morons? The same bunch who also picked for coach of the year as the only coach who was massively fined for cheating last year?

I'd take a pointless award by fans over a vote by a bunch of blowhards anyday.

The fact that the fans picked Flacco over Matt Ryan and Chris Johnson makes it even more impressive. We have a tiny fan base, we could never get Flacco to win an award no matter how many times we vote. Just look at the pro bowl voting, we couldn't even get Ngata in.

I prefer this award over the hyped up AP award where some of the writers actually said that Matt Ryan is MVP material. Bunch of tools.

It's more of a "what have you done for me lately" type of thing. Being that Joe Flacco was in the limelight for a full two weeks longer than Matt Ryan, Joe probably made up most of the ground during that time period.

The Ravens aren't popular at all. In order for one of our players to win an award they would have to outplay the guys they're competing with. Otherwise nobody's going to vote for us.

Well...it helped that we had that stickied thread on here promoting the award, as well as all those 50 billion times that I voted every other day...lol.

I don't think you understand how difficult it was to click and refresh and click, over and over and over again with a laptop touchpad! lol.
I stopped caring about the AP polls when Smith won coach of the year. Are you kidding me? Sparano should have been the clear cut winner, and I know I'm prejudiced, but I think Harbs should have edged out Smith. ok, Smith had the whole "Vick" situation, which, although horrific morally, I really don't see as being that difficult to overcome. He turned the team around, but so did Harbs, and Harbs had a much tougher process to go through. He took a team of vets led by the defense that had turned into a group of solo acts that were treated like Kings by Billick and laid down the law and won them all over. Harbs completely turned around the franchise. IMO, Sparano, Harbs, then Smith. AP poll was a joke.
Smith deserves it.
Personally, I would have voted for Sparano too, because I feel he did more with a lot less, but I have no problem with Smith winning it.
And no way Harbs gets it over either of those two. I think it's fair to say that the Ravens had FAR less problems to fix than either of those two teams did, and they both made the playoffs as well.

I agree. Both Ryan and Flacco did what was asked of them by their teams and more. We can both be proud of our rookies and I know we both are. Praising Flacco does not mean we have to belittle Ryan or any other rookie - I was also quite impressed by Chris Johnson. All of the rookies had to have good, supportive players around them to achieve what they have, and that's certainly not a knock - even established players can't win games on their own.

I hope our rookies continue to impress us and make us proud. Maybe some year in the near future, Flacco and Ryan will be playing in the SuperBowl against each other - it would be exciting to see that.

So, congratulations to Ryan for his ROY and congratulations to Flacco for his ROY, they are both deserving and I'm glad that each of them got one.

1. No award is meaningless. This was voted by the fans. Even if folks had a chance to hit refresh and vote again, they did it over 1 million times for our Joe Flacco. It also shattered the old record of 400,000. That shows the respect and popularity of Joe Flacco. (Hey, we always cry about getting no national respect. Well, this shows otherwise).

2. This tells me that Joe is slowly becoming a media darling. With his two postseason wins, he has earned the respect of many throughout the NFL world. He did with old fashion hard work, because no one knew who he was before the Senior Bowl.

3. While the overall face of the franchise is still Ray Lewis, Flacco has given our offense a face. I wonder if we lose Ray, would Joe Flacco suddenly become the face of this franchise. Two names were heard during this postseason as it pertains to the Ravens: Joe Flacco and Ray Lewis.

Now let's get him some receivers and watch Flacco take the next level.

I don;t get these silly arguments that "Flacco played behind a great defense." "All Flacco had to do was manage the game."

Hello! Football is a team sport. There is more than one guy out there. A players greatness can always be linked to the performance of others on the field.

Joe Montana had Jerry Rice and vice verse.
Peyton has Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne and vice verse.
Tom Brady has Randy Moss.

Hell, Peyton Manning won his first Super Bowl when he learned how to utilize his running game and his defense and just manage the game.

Big Ben is the ultimate "manage the game" QB.

Look, Matt Ryan success can also be linked to a great running game from Norwood and Turner, as well as a great season by Roddy White. It does not take away from Matt Ryan's greatness.

Joe Flacco had a great season, because he had Derrick Mason, Rice/McClain/McGahee, as well as our great defense. It is a TEAM SPORT! So, when I read comments that "the defense carried Flacco," I question that person's knowledge of the game.

Greatness in football is relative. Get Flacco two strong receivers in addition to Mason, and keep our defense strong, and watch how good Flacco could be next year.

Bottomline, Flacco was a big reason why we went to the AFC Title game this year. Matt Ryan was a big reason why ATL went to the postseason.

I'm happy Flacco got SOME post-season recognition but it seems hollow. It still doesn't change the fact that he was completely snubbed for the AP RoY award.

No its not. The fan vote is only 1/3 of pro bowl voting. The other 2/3 of the vote comes from players and coaches. So, when you make the pro bowl, you've not only earned the fans respect but you've earned it from your peers. Thats something that I do agree with Chris Johnson on. The opinion of guys who play or coach the game is more important then that of writers who are wrong 99% of the time and fans who let their emotions dictate basically every football conclusion that the come to.

Define "real". A bunch of writers who always get predictions wrong or tens of thousands of fans... I'll go with the fans instead of the ESPN wannabe crowd.
I wish I owned a company so I could make my own meaningless awards. How is anyone excited about this?
It's sponsored by Diet Pepsi in conjunction with the NFL. Why should anyone care if their team wins the college football championship if it's sponsored by some random corporation? Why be excited to have tickets at M&T Bank stadium? The sponsor is just piggy-backing on the attention the game gets. The NFL would still have the voting - Pepsi just gets to put their name on it, a la "Nokia Sugar Bowl" type stuff...

And we get excited over it b/c Joe deserves it.

the point is that regular average Joes like us voted for who we thought the ROY should have been. The people have spoken and they thought Joe was the best rookie out there. Sports writers crowned ROY to Ryan before the season even started so I dont buy into their meaningless empty thoughts. The normal people that watch the game with passion, their opions mean more to me than sombody watching the game for a paycheck
