Steve said The Ravens are "hopeful" that they will lock up linebacker Ray Lewis to a long-term deal and don't foresee using the franchise tag to keep him off the free-agent market.

Harbaugh said that he wants to keep the position within the organization. What are your thoughts on keeping the Defensive Corrdinator coaching vacancy "in house"? Best candidate for the job?

Thats going to be a tough call....its definitely not something to rush into. Im all for looking around if we can decide on a guy thats "right" for the job. Im all for keeping it in house. It has not failed us to this point.

Edit: I do like Mattison as well. I doubt he will be looking for another job too long either.

I agree with Mattison, and I believe he is a solid choice. Staying in house we can still run a similar defense to Rex's hybrid system, and allow a smooth transition with the players we currently have. No need to go outside and find a guy who will totally change the philosophy.

Agreed. We dont need too much change this season. Just a few key players to give us that extra "edge"

Since Ryan is gone it's going to be even more critical to keep Ray Lewis around bcuz next to Rex he's probably the smartest defensive mind we have in our entire organization. He'll be able to hold our Defense together in top form. Now if Ray leaves the question becomes...will we have a problem?

Rex is in NY and is basically running that entire organization, I wonder how much he'd be willing to give up in a trade if Ozzie Tagged Sizzle and offered him to Ryan? A couple 1st round picks? ;) Then we'd be able to go after Peppers. Peppers would increase the pass rush dramatically and ease the pressure on our secondary. So will Mattison or whoever, be able to dial up blitzes that will allow us to get to the qb as effectively as Rex did? If not, we might need to make that deal happen and bring in Peppers.

You know Ryan is going to try and steal as many Raven personnel as he possibly can. How badly do you think he'll want Sizzle? :D

i just hope whoever takes over doesnt start running some simple vanilla defense. we better keep our aggressive and blitz heavy philosophy.

Nope. Nope. and Nope. Suggs is younger than Peppers, and probably all around more talented. I'd much rather have Suggs dropping back in coverage than Peppers. Suggs will also be a cheaper option as a DE/OLB hybrid compared to a strictly DE like Peppers. Also Peppers doesn't play in a 3-4 so who knows how effective he would be in our system. We know what Suggs brings to the table, and how hard he is willing to play. Look at how well he performed in the AFC Championship with basically one arm. I'll take Suggs over Peppers any day and every day.

Why would either team want to do that? There is not even a chance that the Jets would give up two first round draft picks for Suggs, and Ozzie would be out of his mind to then flip those picks for a 30 year old defensive lineman...

Not only is Suggs going to be better for longer, but Sizzle also knows our system already, and excels here. Peppers would be nice to improve the pass rush, but it's not worth giving up a more complete linebacker.

Same. But it doesn't look like he's losing his head coaching position just yet.

i dont want peppers here and we must keep sizzle

Also rex would rather have Bart SCott or Ray IMO as they have Pace and Gholston so they are set at OLB

id like us to hire Clarence Brooks as D-coordinator

Bill Cower would never come to Baltimore to be a D coordinator. I know you will say its about money but this man wont come here for 2 reasons. His heart is in Pitt and I dont think he would join our organization just for that. The 2nd thing. I think hes only coming out of retirement to be a Head Coach and nothing more

here are the bios of the four main candidates for DC:
Clarence Brooks, D line coach
http://www.baltimoreravens.com/People/Coac...nce_Brooks.aspx

Greg mattison, Linebackers coach
http://www.baltimoreravens.com/People/Coac...g_Mattison.aspx

Chuck Pagano, secondary coach
http://www.baltimoreravens.com/People/Coac...uck_Pagano.aspx

Mark Carrier, defensive backs coach
http://www.baltimoreravens.com/People/Coac...rk_Carrier.aspx

I, personally, like Clarence Brooks. He's been with the team the longest of all those candidates (It's Mattison and Pagano's first years on the team) and he is a dline coach just like Rex Ryan was.

Brooks deserves to be the front runner. I just remember Mattison had a very dominant overpowering defense at Florida. I know thats college and all but you have to look at that and say the guy knows what hes doing.

While I don't know whether this would fit within the guidelines of the CBA, there's a couple of pretty simple solutions to consider. Promote Mattison to Defensive Coordinator, and sign Ray to a longterm deal (8 - 10 years) that would make him linebackers' coach as well. I figure Ray has 3 - 5 years left, discounting injury, at which point he could simply shift to being full-time linebackers' coach. Mattison turns 60 this year - if he retires in a few years, Ray could be promoted to Defensive Coordinator at that point, unless he feels that he'd rather be in the front office. If Ray would rather go that direction, transferring from linebackers' coach to working with Ozzie would be really easy.

Or just go whole hog right now and make Ray player/coach as Defensive coordinator.

Either way, we might be able to save enough money on a long term deal with the promise of continued employment for Ray far into the future either as a coach or in the front office to bring everyone back.

You guys really think the Panthers are going to let Peppers get away? This is a business the Panthers are going to franchise him and then probably resign him next year. I wouldn't be surprised if Clarence got the job. Orignally I thought it would be cool to have Mark Carrier as a DC, but as a secondary specialist he wouldn't be native to blitzes. It would be too much change working from the secondary in rather the Ravens work from the tackles back.

If Peppers doesn't want to be there, then yeah. Maybe they'll tag him this year, but what about next? If he doesn't want to be there, he won't sign a long term deal. Or he could hold out, or whatever...

I know everybody saw the article in the Sun about what Bisciotti said, but WNST had a pretty cool video about how he feels about Ray. I still think that this story is way overhyped and that Ray will have a deal with Baltimore before he even gets a chance to taste true free agency.

I think Cinci truly feels their rough season was due to all their injuries...and maybe it was. Perhaps we will see a different team this year?
