yeah I just read the article about him giving us $8 mil more cap room. I won't be to sad to see him go if thats the case. I don't believe Heap is a free agent yet? I think we still have him for another year or so

You're crazy, for years McAlister was arguably the best corner in the league.
the salary cap is a really complicated matter, and if you understand it better than I, awesome... but I bet you don't.

For you to repeatedly state that keeping mcalister has a smaller impact on the salary cap vice releasing him (Where we know we will save $8mil on the cap) is quite bold. How much of his salary goes toward the cap in 2009-2010? Anyone know? Whatever it is, I seriously doubt it is worth keeping him on the team and taking up a roster slot. He needs to go.

I'm not sure we have ANY shot at keeping all three LBs if we keep McAlister (just based off his projected 2009-2010 salary [but i'm not sure how much of that counts towards the cap])-- but if we release him, we at least have another $8mil to use towards those three LBs you mention plus brown, heap, stover, leonhard, etc.
Well it really won't matter for 2010 because there won't be a cap in 2010 or 2011 as of right now.

But after looking through the web today, a lot of sites are reporting that the Ravens are indeed planning on cutting their ties with Mcalister. Most of these are reports are from yesterday, so most of the current details are pretty vague.

I would say that its inevitable at this point. I really didn't think they would do it. They put all that money behind a guy a few years ago, plays great in 2006, obviously played through injury in 2007 and in 2008 he gets benched and operated on.

Now it seems he won't be a Raven any longer. Shame! The guys been a part of this team for a while.

I don't think Chris accepted the new coaching mentality. He was used to doing it the easy Billick way.

are you seroius..? C-MaC was a shutdown corner from 1999-2006. It is only until the recent "feel sorry for the WR so call penalties on everything" that he has not been a shutdown corner.

It would be nice to keep C'Mac but the reality is we can't.

C'Mac is NOT a free agent next year. He is slated to make $10 Million dollars in 2009. The thing is, we don't have a whole lot of cap room to work with for next season. With the dead money from the McNair and Ogden contracts we're gonna be tight this year. We have about $14 million in available cap space as of now (probably less bcuz of Flacco's/Willie Anderson earned incentives). Next year you have to set aside at LEAST $10 million for re-signing our restricted free agents and exclusive-rights free agents plus to sign our draft picks. Also, you have to set aside a couple Mill incase players get injured throughout the year and we have to sign replacements (like we had to do this year: chad slaughter, stone, douglas, ogelsby, terrence copper).

That doesn't leave a whole lot of $$ to re-sign Jason Brown, Terrell Suggs, Ray Lewis, Bart Scott, a Free Agent WR/CB ect...

C'Mac makes $10 million in 09 (he will be the highest paid raven for 09) if we release him we take a cap hit of $2 million in dead money but we save $8 million dollars in available cap space. Samari as of right now will make $6 million plus in 2009. If we release/trade him we will take a cap hit of $2 million dollars in dead money but we'll save $4 million in available cap space.

That's $12 million dollars in extra cap room to work with by just releasing/trading those 2 players. So insted of only $14 million to work with we could be looking at $26 million in cap space.

If we let go Heap, Willie Anderson, and frank Walker we could save an additional $8.7 million dollars of cap space($35 milloin in availble cap space total) In order to keep around Brown, Lewis, Scott, Suggs ect. we have to release players we can do with out.

C'Mac hasn't been able to stay healthy for the last 2 years. Neither has Samari rolle for that much. They're getting older and can't seem to shake the injury bug for whatever reason. C'Mac is not worth $10 million dollars for a season he might not even fully play in. Either he takes a pay cut or he gets cut. And I highly doubt he is going to want to take a paycut. He's already burned the bridge with Harbaugh. We've proven we can win without him. Take that $10 mill and invest it in a younger fresher shutdown CB or a premier WR or to re-sign players or to do all 3.

For some reason I feel bad if we release Rolle but i wouldn't care if we let c-mac go, but i think unless we plan on getting an FA CB we can't let them both go, who would we have a rookie, washington and walker, that isn't that good, rolle is still good

C-MAC is a great corner...probably one of the best to ever play for the Ravens.. However 10 million is money that we can use to add depth at different positions. I would love to have C-MAC here next year. However, we cannot afford to pay him, the three monster LB's, the young center, and Jim leonhard. Obviously, the more feasible plan is to cut or trade C-MAC. That money can be used to sign another quality corner (Maybe Dunta Robinson) and help free cap room for the LB's we need to sign. Fact of the matter is, we don't need C-MAC'S services (heck, we made it to the AFC Championship Game without him). We would love to have him because he creates turnovers and shuts down big receivers but that money could help bring talent to the offensive side of the football and help sign other quality guys..(i.e. Jim Leonhard or Jason Brown)

We need C-Mac back next year. For those of you who say he isnt a shut down corner, well, you forgot what he did for us. THis year and last year he had this same knee thing. He didnt have surgury this offseason, which was clearly a mistake. He had 3 picks this year in the 5 games he played, with a bad knee. We need all the depth we can get because, frankly, i dont want to see Frank Walker starting ever again. We draft one this year with our 1 or 2 pick, and we groom him for the future. Rolle+C-mac+Fabian+Walker+New guy=solid secondary. Ivy might still be ok as well. Im comfortable with Fabian, C-Mac, and Rolle starting. Fabian and the new guy being our corners of the future. Id love for us to restructure his contract, because we know hes not going to get big money if we cut him. Our corners was clearly the weakness in our defense for the past two years, and the common problem in there was that we didnt have a healthy c-mac. I just dont feel comfortable with our secondary if we have to start Rolle and Fabian as our 1 and 2, because chances are one of them is gunna get hurt.

Walker and Fabian Washington starting, and Ivy and Oglesby as the backups...i dont care how well we can stop the run, we arent stopping anyone from passing on us with that as our healthy secondary. I dont know where youre getting these numbers from, but i have a hard time believing theyre that low. We payed Ray 7 million, Bart 3.5 and Suggs 8.2 for this season. Thats 18 million we payed last year in their salaries. You have to count that towards cap space. Suggs will, hopefully, go long term in which he'll make 5-6 million this season. Bart will be the same deal. Ray, i would hope, isnt going to ask for more than 6 million. All of this added on that this is guaranteed money, and not bonuses. Sure cutting c-mac/rolle would help us keep our linebackers, but our secondary would implode.

Do we need Cmac? I don't really think so. We made it to AFC Finals without him but I wonder what difference would have made if he did play. We get with the deep ball allot. Would C Mac have made a diffrence and If keeping him saves money for us to sign other players i say keep him. Esp if we have o fight to keep Ray Ray out of Dallas.

That pretty much says it right there. Though, to be fair, Rolle has had his moments here and there when he's been healthy. Seeing as how he eats up less cap space than McAlister, it wouldn't be out of the question to see Rolle back on this team for at least one more season.

It's not that McAlister can't play anymore -- we don't know that for sure. But what we DO know is that it's unlikely he can play at the same high level when he was healthy and younger, and it's unlikely he'll take a pay cut to reflect the erosion of his physical abilities. We love CMac, but this is one of those instances where he will have to swallow his pride if he wants to remain on the team.

if their any position that suffers a serious dropoff in just one season due to injury and age, it's CB. plus his knee injury is chronic, means that its not going to just go away anytime soon or ever.

Exactly. In fact I still think C'Mac has some game left in him I just don't think it's $10 million dollars good enough. It's either keep C'Mac, hope he returns to his old form, and sacrifice our Free Agents or cut C'Mac, save some much needed cap room and bring back 2-3 critical players (Lewis, Brown, Suggs).

Someone mentioned in one of the above post that Washington and Walker would be our starters with Ogelsby and Ivy backing them up.

No. That will not happen. If we cut both C'Mac and Rolle we're definitely going to get a CB in free agency or via trade. Deangelo Hall is a free agent next year (I think), Dunta Robinson, Nnamdi Asomugha, Phillip Buchanon, Bryant McFadden, R.W. Mcquarters, all will be free agents in 2009. Not to mention we have Derrek Martin coming back next year off of IR. Rolle might take a paycut and return as our starting nickel depending on who we pick up in Free agency. We might even draft a 1st round corner like Vontae Davis or Malcolm Jenkins who could fill in as a starter in some way or fashion (nickel or dime packages). But I don't see Ivy or Olgelsby returning next year. Ivy doesn't play coverage he plays catch up and Ogelsby...who? Yeah, exactly!
I've heard numerous reports that C-mac already has one foot out the door. Thinking back to the benching incident earlier in the season am I the only one that thinks C-mac didn't get along well with his new coaches?

Could you IMAGINE how well our season would have went if he hadn't been injured? Sure we'll be saving 8 mil. a year. But at the same time, who's going to step up in the CB position? Rolle is good, but his numerous injurys cause concern. He's also not getting any younger. Washington is a decent CB but I feel like there were plays he could have made this year that he did not.
well first off fabian washington is probley one of the best corners in the league. he has elite speed and amazing at covering.. the boy just needs to work on his tackling which wouldnt be hard to do. look how good he did against top recievers since he took over when mcalister hit the injured reserve list. he covered t.o. with no problem, only mis play he had was when he tripped in the endzone. look how well he covered against santana moss. common now u need to watch more football. look when we playeda the giants, when u thought bradshaw was gone, look who caught up to him in seconds. and fabian was on the other side of the field. also in the playoffs against the steelers look how well he covered santana holmes on that play when he got a td thee only td for steelers on the offensive side, big ben is dangerous out of the pocket, he scrambled and we couldnt get to him this also says we need better pass rushing. fabian slipped up but he was right next to holmes for a good amount of time until he fell. can i ask what kind of mistakes there has been. the kid has talent for being so young, the team needs to look for someone on the other side, i would say release mcalister and have 11 m to spend, i would def go for dunta robinson or better than that nmandi asomugha. thy played together in oakland im sure they would do great here especially with reed landry leonard.. and bischotti did say he will do everything he can to keep lewis, but if it doesnt work out. then thats the way it goes, ravens are looking forward such as 2010, they want a young team with elite players..
people sit there and say keep ray but the man needs to take a damn discount, greta phenomenal player who leads this team. yea he is going to be 34 next season but he plays like hes 28 and every1 can agree.. but he is going to want almost 25-30 million we cant do this. if we do we are jeopardizing our roster.. our team pretty much. if playing this all smart we would sign scott and suggs, both young guys. keep leonard and landry i know we can do that, def release ivy (felt bad when he got destoryed by lima sweed) great tackler tho..... let go of martin and olgesby release yamon figurs he looks scared out there.. this team has great rookies that will step in at anytime, such as ZBIII and Harukiii.. rolle might plan on retiring hes not to sure, i would def say keep frank walker as well he did great against titans and steelers, every1 on this board says its the corners fault, corners take care of outside when linebackers inside play a zone they watch the middle, most of the passes from tennesse and steelers were over the middle.. they were throwing slants left and right.. oglesby did get destroyed by lima sweed tho i will say that. and he dropped the ball, that was a for sure TD but luckily it didnt... i hope this helps.. i say we all make a fundraiser and every raven out there should donate 10 bucks to the ravens just to keep our boys.. lol wouldnt that be so awesome if that could ever happen, and i know ever1 would do it to... hahahahah B)

I agree with you. C-Mac might still have a lot of game left. But he's also a bucket full of questions right now. For that amount of money, it's not worth to see if all those questions are answered in a positive manner. We could end up disappointed again.

I don't mind Fabian staying and even starting. But we need to do something to change up our CB core. There are some good free agents we can try for. But we should definitley draft a CB early as well. Something needs to change. This is the second season in a row, our CB core has been devastated by injury.
