What Was With The Play Calling Sunday?

22 posts in this topic

Maybe its just me, but the offensive play calling on sunday seemed way off.

QB sneak when we have mcclain back there, or even a little screen pass, they saw that comming way before the snap

What happened with Rice, i seen him make a little screen pass into 22yards and then never seen him again.

It really suprised me on the play calling, we had a great chance to win that game and honestly i think the play calling lost it for us. Oh and the 25 yard penalty that put us back at the 20ish.

Anybody have any similar thoughts

i do understand being conserative, but there its worse to be too conservative, i think we proved that with the play calling

Yes i agree, on that 4th and 1 why not give it to L'trainm he would of got the yard,
And yorue right, Rice cathes the ball in the backfield, jukes two defnders and then stiff arms Farrior and doesnt touch the ball again, it was ridiculous, Joe needs to build chemistry with more people than just Mason

not really depends on if you use them alot and we did not use them alot in the game. Lets see tho how do you get rid of a blitz....screen pass!

true....but why stop the most successfull one, that needed to let joe actually go out and throw, granted there was hardly any seperation from the receivers but thats when cameron needs to do something, like the double reverse, awesome...15yards, didnt see it again. Everyone expects us to play that way so you need to change things up, hell, put reed in as a receiver and i bet that will throw them off big time, then dump it down to rice over the middle.

The Ravens had two games to prepare for the Steelers' very tough D. QUICK passes, lining up Rice in the slot, screens, draws, SLANTS -- that's what I expected to see, because that's what I think would have been effective. Yet we seemed ill prepared to execute those sorts of plays. We ran Willis 20 times. I expected to see more of Rice and McClain. Maybe we would have lost anyway, but I was disappointed in the game planning/play calling.
forgot to mention that wonderful roughing the kicker penalty
Fortunately the Steelers' terrible clock management negated that call, which was obviously blown.

I felt we should have gone with more high %age passes initially instead of launching the ball downfield repeatedly on first and second down to be stuck with 3rd and long consistently. Let Flacco get into a rhythm before hurling the bomb into the teeth of the Steelers' secondary. We were not running the ball terribly either, but we were doing it on 2nd and 10 after a 1st and 10 incompletion. They were not stacking the box so we had room to run that we should have taken advantage of, then thrown some play action passes their way once they start keeping Troy P. up for run support.

I think McClain was still hurting hence his minor role in the game, but I expected to see more Rice as well.

Yeah man, I was very glad to see us throwing early and often. This is why we need to make a WR the top priority over the next few months.

I like Cam but, he just lacks the it value. I don't think hes good enough to be in the NFL. I say that knowing how far we came, and he might of helped it but I feel it could of been done better overall in the right hands.

this was a rebuilding year and I think our offense will come around but it starts with protecting Joe and creating holes for our Running backs to get into. We really had the tools to beat Pitt. We didnt use them in the right manner and we definitely executed everything horrible on offense. We did not once have a 3 WR formation. How are you gonna spread the secondary with Mason and Clayton being our only 2 options for Flacco. I think we should have studied the Titans game plan to use against the Steelers because they know how to handle the top tier D's of the league now. They shreaded Pitt and they did the same to us. We could have followed their style to a T and ran away with that game. We seen that screen passes were effective against Pitt and when they werent stacking the box, we could actually get good runs on them. Cam will have more faith next season and we should see a new style of offense in Baltimore!

Exactly. Thats what the Card's did very productively against Philly. Philly would blitz, Warner dumped a screen that had good blocking. Why cant we operate a proper screen audible in the event of a blitz. Theres where they should work on Flacco in the off season, the audible.

The whole Rice thing was driving me crazy. Why was he taking kicks and not getting the ball on offfense?

Give the guy a break. We had to promote a FB to a RB, start a rookie QB, have one of the youngest offensive lines in the NFL, and the most consistent wide receiver had to play with just one arm in some of the games this year.

Not to mention there isn't a better guy for Joe than Cam. This is the same guy that coached Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers. I think the body of work speaks for itself.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree big time. Cam is credited in helping develop Tomlinson, Rivers and Brees over in San Diego.
Not even factoring that in, I trust Cam with our offense. Overall, I would give him a B+ for this year. Maybe even an A. He did a great job, especially considering what he had to work with. A great example is if you look at all the blowouts we dealt this season. And the fact that we led the NFL in net points. Sure, you can say the defense played a role in that, but we've had essentially the same defense for years and have never came close to doing what we did this year.
I'm looking for big things from our offense next year. With Flacco and our young OL getting a full season under their belts working together, and a healthy Willis and Rice, things are looking up for us.
