Landry V Leonhard (merged Threads)

116 posts in this topic

Jim Leonhard i think in my own opinon is that he is one of the ravens best defenders and i think that he should try to get re-signed to the ravens for the next 3-4 years... i mean he broke all of the punt return records at the uw in wisconsin and tied with jamar fletchers 21 interceptions in his 4 year college career... Who Do u think leonhard should play for...

Peace Out :D

ok, let me start by saying that leonard had a great year. he made plays when given the opportunity and was at the right place at the right time. but remember this guy was a free agent for a reason. we have the system to take average players and put them into a position to succeed. that does not mean that they are great in and of themselves. when healthy, landry is a dominant safety and he was coming into his own last season. if he is healthy to start the 09 season there is no way leonard has the job. i don't see us keeping 6 safeties on the roster either we cut someone or put them on the PS. whether they clear waivers is another story. but i can assure you landry will have his starting job back if he is healthy.
Too hung up with hero worship to see the obvious. Landry is already one of the top young safeties in the league, Leonard had a good year despite his flaws and has earned a backup position. This situation boils down to either Zbibikowski or Nakamura getting cut or put on the practice squad.
I don't think so because we're going to be tight on money, and some other team will pony up for Leonhard. Zbi/Haruki will stay as great depth when Leo leaves.
I'm in love with Leonard. Landry is going to be the pricier option to keep, but he's a more established player. However Leonard stepped up big this year, and what can't the guy do? Landry has limited speed, Leonard has no limits apart from size. I say we let Landry go to free up cap space and make Leonard the starting safety next to Reed.
I would imagine that because of Jim's play this season, he could get more money than Landry could elsewhere. He proved he is capable of learning defenses quickly and can execute very well, and he definitely showed it all year. Landry is a great player and he will only continue getting better but he hasn't really done a lot on the field that screams 'big money" not sure where you got that idea. Landry was also a 5th-6th round pick if I'm not mistakened so he is not going to be occupying as much cap space as you think, even with a new contract.

i would personally like to see both of them back here next year. We took 5 safeties (Ed, Jim, Dawan, Haruki, and Tommy Z) into the beginning of the season this past year, I don't see why it wouldn't be an option for us to possibly do so again providing we resign Dawan AND Jim.
I was just wondering myself who from our defense may end up following Rex to NY. would HATE to see any of our boys go...especially Leonhard. He has worked so hard and proved he deserves a starting spot on our D.
I can almost guarantee you that if Jim and any of our "big 3" (Ray, T-Sizzle, and Bart) are not resigned they will be wearing green and white next year.

That's an ideal situation, but I highly, highly doubt it'd come to fruition. Why would Jimmy stay in Baltimore and remain a backup if there are numerous teams out there willing to give him the starting job?
i think people are jumping the gun on leonard. landry is by far the better safety. he is the better tackler, he's better at stopping the run and better in coverage. i'm not saying that leonard didn't come up big for us in a lot of games this year, but i've also seen where he's cost us on missed tackles and blown coverage. there were times when he made into the backfield and just stood there like he didn't know what to do and the rushers just blew past him. i think we try to keep both but landry is the better safety.
well put.. i agree.. even if you want to put numbers into the equation, look at landry's rookie year compared to jimmy's his first year here.. and we have enough talent on PR/KR like ray rice and tommy z that it isnt a NECESSITY to keep him because of his value there.. i say keep both if possible but we have bigger fish to fry with suggs, scott, lewis, brown, and others.. I loved watching Jimmy play, but we drafted two safties last year for a reason and they played pretty well when they got the opportunity, too.

If it were possible, and I don't know how realistic this is, I would like to sign Leohnard to a deal and trade him for a second round pick.

if only Jimmy could play corner lol... on another note, im not ready to see McCalister go.. now that hes had two injury plagued seasons in a row, its easy to forget he was an ELITE corner in the nfl for years before that.. we NEED secondary help, be it through the draft or FA.. hopefully we can come through with some talent to take Chris' place, because those are some big shoes to fill.. im sure the organization will do what is right, i just wish we could get some value for c-mac instead of just cutting him to free up cap space. i guess they'll do what they have to do though to sign the backers, brown, and hopefully landry
