Quite frankly, I think I take the opposite approach. Leonhard has EARNED the right to play here. You Landy lovers need to understand that Leonhard was a vital aspect of the defensive scheme this year. Players, coaches and the talking heads all agree. Earlier in the season the argument (on these very same boards) was that Leonhard lacked big play ability...proved wrong. The poor tackler argument is way out in left field, and he can cover with the best of them. I like Landry as well, but to snub a guy that has meant so much to the team is just wrong. I say we rehash this argument once all the free agent signings/draft and first couple of pre-season games are over. None of us has any clue what will happen personnel wise yet.
Agreed.

I was just wondering myself who from our defense may end up following Rex to NY. would HATE to see any of our boys go...especially Leonhard. He has worked so hard and proved he deserves a starting spot on our D.

I dont have a link, but I was wondering if anyone has the link talking about Jim Leonhard's contract expiring and his maybe following Rex to NY. That would be heartbreaking, that kid shows so much potential.

No updates on Jimmy yet. I know our cap money will be tight. I think more then likley you'll see the franchise go on Suggs,Lewis and see Bart being released. Which is heartbreaking as well. I dont see us letting Jimmy go. I think the following speaks for itself...He was the team's best punt returner, averaging 11.6 yards, nearly twice Figurs. He returned kickoffs on occasion (averaging 20.4yards). And when the need arose as it did in the AFC title game, when the Ravens were short on cornerbacks Leonhard played nickel back, too. He made a career-high 85tackles and played well in the playoffs (one interception, half a sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and 16tackles). I think those numbers speak for themselves. I would hate to see him leave and join Ryan in NY. Jim is one of my new favorite football players. If we resign him im def. gettin myself a Jimmy jersey!!!

If Landry's neck is the issue, could be resigned and but right on IR to see how things shake out? Would that keep him off the cap? Then sign Leonhard for this upcoming season to see if he will still produce or if he was a one hit wonder.

I highly doubt he's a one hit wonder. He's been there for pretty much every big play this season.

Yeah I know, but he doesn't have enough to show he is worth going into a bidding war with say the Jets for. If the price is right by all means sign the man.

Most definitely Landry. Leonhard is decent in our system as he has guys blowing up the line up front, and db's backing him up, but Jim lacks a few key skills. Jimmy is just not a good open field tackler, and he absolutely requires extra help to blow up another player; it probably has a lot to do with his size, but the fact remains. Furthermore, Leo is not above average in defending the pass, and we need a solid secondary that can read qb's well.

I'd love to keep Jimmy as he is an awesome complementary player, but if we were to lose him I'd be confident in Zbi/Haruki filling in nicely. Losing Landry would be pretty bad because our other guys would take a season or two to develop.

And he came up big when we needed him. Do you think we would have had the same season without him? Because Im not so sure we would have. I think he was a bigger factor then what people are giving him credit for. Landry is great, but whos to say he'll be the same when we get him back next season?

I agree he's made big plays. Most his big plays coming in the punt return & blitzing department. There should be an open competition for the spot for sure.

But I do think Landry is the better coverage safety. Will his injury have an affect on him next year? None of us know that answer. He just needs to show up to training camp and preseason, and do what he does.

As for Leonard. If Landry gets the starting gig, I would definitley like to see Leonard used in numerous of packages as well as kick returns. He seems to have a real knack and perfect balance of speed/vision in the punt return game. Transition Leonard into a nickelback, where his blitzing abilities can be used a lot more effectively.

Leonhard has proven to be a real threat on the field. Not that Landry has not been but it seems to me Leonhard would be the better investment.

That's because Leonhard is a fan favorite due to his size and big heart. That doesn't make him the better safety.

Landry's younger, and better in pass cov, which seems to be our little WEAKNSS!

Not to mention he is better in run defense, a better tackler, and a better all around athlete.

hahahaha

Landry has also played as well, if not better, than his brother who was the 6th pick overall. (LaRon has Dawan to thank for being such a high pick). Landry has 4 inches and 40 pounds on Leonhard. Thats huge when it comes to being a safety.

I don't know how you can say Landry is better in pass coverage. Leonhard is way better than Landry in pass coverage. He is quicker and makes bigger plays. Landry is a true "Strong Safety"- he plays the run extremely well. Don't forget that Landry got burned a few times when caught in man-to-man deep. Leonhard is faster than Landry. I like both of them though. Leonhard is better for us right now because he is a better cover guy with a suspect secondary riddled with injuries. But when we had McAllister and Rolle and Reed playing healthy and physical, Landry was better because we could bring him up to play the run more.
I'm in love with Leonard. Landry is going to be the pricier option to keep, but he's a more established player. However Leonard stepped up big this year, and what can't the guy do? Landry has limited speed, Leonard has no limits apart from size. I say we let Landry go to free up cap space and make Leonard the starting safety next to Reed.
I see potential in Leo...However Laundry is a stronger more true strong safty..

I think Landry's neck will be the biggest issue. He might need to be signed to a minimum contract and but on IR just to keep him in our system and resign Leonhard for the time being. Landry is to big a talent that we could keep for a reasonably low cost to let go. Either way I hope he is brought back. Wait until he gets back on the field and you will forget about about Leonhard. (With the exception of punt returns that is ;))

You have the two mixed up... Based on everything I've seen, Leonhard is not a serviceable safety in pass coverage, he is definitely a gadget type player. I would not be happy with Jimmy as the starting SS as he really only does well when used in packages and exotic plays. I'd LOVE to keep both, but Landry is definitely the better all around safety.

Another team would snatch him up very quickly.

Hopefully Zbi takes over that roll full time.
