[News] Why John Harbaugh Expects The Ravens Defense To Be Great

Can't wait to see the Ravens this season especially after adding those defensive weapons. I've always favored defense over offense so this year will be exciting for me.

Same here. I just want us to get our swagger back. Ever since Ray and Ed left, teams have not been scared of us anymore, but now we have players/veterans who can play smash mouth football and hit. All we need is a dominate rushing attack and we'll be just fine. Joe is at his best when he has a running game working so he can use more play-action plays.

Agreed, BUT, it's easier to have a dominate run game if you have a top tier back, line , or both. Our line and backs are not even close to that. We're going to have multiple rookies on our line and we don't even know who is starting. West and Woodhead are our running backs. So little invested into those 2 areas. Boomin defense coming, brutal offense

So are these the forums that are closing??? Are we not going to be able to comment and respond to each other's comments?? That would be incredibly lame. I'm completely done with Baltimoreravens.com if that's the case

Of course Harbs expects the 2017 Ravens D to be great. After the massive investment over the last 2 years in Weddle, B Williams, Tony Jefferson, Carr, and 11 draft picks in the last 2 years, it had darn well better be.

The cupboard is pretty bare on the other side of the ball, where OCs have been fired like Browns' QBs, partially due to coaching ineptitude and certainly due to a lack of talent. There is precious little cap space to shore up the offense, so I'm not sure what to expect the TEAM to do in 2017.

Agreed. If this D doesn't produce this year, it's on Pees.

I too am nervous about the O. Apparently our strategy this year is to hold opponents to low scores, while our offense gets just far enough over the 50 to let Tucker pile up 3-pointers.

Hope Tucker has good legs ALL year.

No, this isn't changing.  You will still be able to comment in the blogs. The stories that are published for the Ravens will still have comments.

We need to see if KC can handle the ILBer spot Orr left open, and do so quickly....If he doesn't seem up to the task, we need to sign a stop gap, Thats the only concern i have on D...

What if bowser who is a good cover LB can play ILB while also being able to blitz, and then you have the rotation of Judon, Z smith, and Tim willams at OLB

With all the Joe bashing going on here, all I can say is
"Make your words soft and sweet because you may have to eat them".
Going to be really hard for some of you to come back here during the season and then praise Joe when he starts firing on all cylinders.

Honestly I'm not worried about that position one bit. Relatively easy spot to fill. An example is how Orr shined. Especially with the talent he had around him. There will be much much more talent sorrounding that spot this year. All the way around. K.C., maybe P.O., another user brought up the good thought of how Bowser can also play the middle while Timmy and Sizzle come off the edge at times. Basketabll , background, he looks really nimble with his coverage on some tape. Also there will definitely be a lot of times where Mosely is holding down the middle by himself, and times where Jefferson plays next to him as well, with Webby and Tavon coming in on some sets. I hear ya, but I'm not worried about that spot what so ever.

Or we just play less combinations with two ILBs on the field. We already play a lot of nickel packages, and we can start playing dime packages with 6 DBs.

A good way to get Jefferson, Webb and Weddle on the field at the same time.

Frankly, if those packages can work, the only need for a 2nd ILB is on obvious running downs. You've already got a guy like McClellan on the roster who could fill that void.

The only concern I have at ILB is IF Mosley gets injured for a long period of time, which is not something you can really plan on. We lack depth at the position.

Won't be hard for them. They're already hypocrites. They'll just pretend like they never said anything and pray that nobody calls them out for it.

Plus in the past they usually hide in shame most of the time anyway.

That is great and all. However, when the offense gets 35 three and outs a game and doesn't score enough points, they will gas even the best defenses, and lose games. I don't blame Ozzie for not drafting a WR because CD and MW were long gone but I do blame him for not getting a WR in FA. There is literally nothing out there except a few old banged up guys that are not gonna help our offense. The offense was horrible with SSS last year. Let's do the math. Not gonna be a good yea, gonna be third in the division. Good job!

What offense got thirty-five 3 and outs? When?

My problem with this is that Bowser is so good coming out of the OLB position that I don't know if you would want to utilize him in a new spot. Could he learn to play ILB? Probably. Would he play better on the outside? My guess would be definately. I can't see why you would switch a player's position unless the team was desperate for a body there, or thought the guy would play better at that spot, which as of now the Raven's are not. My observation is that Bowser is going to be given every opportunity to win the OLB spot across from Suggs. He's a really great player, don't think the team would hamstring his natural abilities. Correa, on the other hand, has got to be dropping on the OLB depth chart, so would make sense for him to fight for the 2nd ILB position. Which the Ravens were trying to teach him last year in OTA's & training camp, Orr just looked so much better there that he won the job.

I'm a big supporter of Joe. But when has Joe ever been firing on all cylinders throughout the season? He's had moments, but has never EVER been a consistent QB firing on all cylinders throughout the season. I pray for it every year though.

Correct, he hasn't. I'd argue you couldn't name a QB in the league that does either for that matter, but that's also irrelevant.

The point is that when Joe plays bad, the trolls are out with their "told you so" signs, but when he plays great games, they run and hide like cowards.

There's 3-4 consecutive game stretches in every season where we never hear from these folks, and I just want to know why.

SO with two games to go last season we were still in the playoff with pretty much a 3 way battle and as the article states the DEFENSE GAVE UP 21 POINTS in the 4TH QUARTER against the Steelers to lose and get knocked out of the playoffs!!! Not Flacco, Not the Offense - the DEFENSE let it happen and they did it more than just that game. Now our defense is putting a better squad out there (at least on paper at the moment) and our offense has another full offseason, training camp and pre season with Flacco, Wallace, Perriman, West, Dixon and the other young receivers to get ready. IF they can stay healthy as a whole 2017 should be an exciting season!!

There are several QBs that are consistently productive, in the regular season. Matt Ryan, Tom Brady, Drew Brees are just a few. The difference with these guys and Joe is that they read defenses better and call better audibles. No one trolls when a team/player is doing well.
