[News] Ravens Not Done Adding Players To Address Remaining Needs

Bring Q back. He has HEART

AGREE. Can never have enough WINNERS on your team. If we can get him at approximately the same price the Lions paid him last year Q would be a great addition. 2 million is small money for 67 catches and 8 TD's, not to mention the toughness, down field blocking, and Red Zone presence. #81 is now available. Karma?

If you mean Taquan Mizzell - in the highlights I saw, he is either really good or beat a lot of bad arm tackles. Either way, he can catch.

He's fast too. You don't get the nickname smoke for no reason. Only thing that might hold him back is his size. We will see if he makes the team. He doesn't seem scared so they better find a way to use him.

One cannot help wondering... just how hard is it for any fan to grasp the notion that the draft is NOT the last chance to add players to the roster? How hard one must ignore news to miss all the sea of news every single summer that this or that team added new guys to the roster - months AFTER the draft? How removed from reality one must be not to know that a roster is as far from its final, finished version in the first day of May, 4 months before the start of the season, as it can be? Who doesn't know that Steve Smith, Owen Daniels, Jacoby Jones, Vonta Leech were all added to the roster WELL AFTER the draft - just to name a few key late additions?

Who worries that all 53 players ending on the Ravens final roster in September, are already on the roster now?

Yes, one doesn't have to know the intricate details to be a fan. But we're talking about basics here...

Your history is a little hazy...

1. Steve Smith signed in March, about 2 weeks into FA. Well, well, well before the draft.

2. Owen Daniels signed in early April, about a month before the draft.

3. Jacoby signed in early May, about a week or two after the draft. While important to our SB win, he was primarily just a returner and never developed into a quality receiver.

The notable summer additions in recent years include Daryl Smith and Vonta Leach (and those were quite a while ago, actually). While we typically can get a role player at some point in the summer/fall, we're not signing world-beaters this late in most cases.

Yes wide receiver is a real concern BUT I do not believe that we have the O-Line solved yet. Yes we drafted 2 pieces but they were not top of the draft picks so it's questionable if either will be able to come close to starting and neither is a center. I do not think that either Urschel or Jensen can handle the starting center roll ..... Help Needed!

Nico Siragusa is starter material...Dude is a beast, who played every game that he was eligible in college. Look at his stats(or game film), he is not only a piledriver, but extremely durable to boot. I could easily see him starting at LG, and moving Alex Lewis to RT.(remember, Lewis played tackle in college, so not such a big transition for him.) As far as center, I wonder that Mangold and the Raven's don't have a handshake deal that he signs after June 1st. We'll have to wait and see...

I agree, we now should address the C, ILB, and WR....they did sign some undrafted rookies though, maybe they can become gems

All indications are we are content at ILB with internal players. We heard the same thing from fans when we decided to go with Orr at ILB as well.

Correa is going to get the first shot at the job, and if he gets outplayed by somebody else so be it.

From where I'm sitting, a 2nd ILB isn't really all that important in a base 3-4 that plays a lot of nickel coverage. Could even see more dime packages with the depth and talent our secondary now has.

Can see plenty of scenarios where the 2nd ILB is only playing maybe half the defensive snaps.

No matter what the Ravens do, I think it's going to still be a couple years before we can contend. Too many holes. Although the draft this year really focused on D, how many times do all of a teams drafted players come in and make an impact? Let alone undrafted guys. We better find a few UFAs to fill the biggest gaps we have this year, or we're in real trouble. I think next year the FO will focus heavily on offense, then we'll need a year to see how those picks go. By the 2019 draft we'll be looking for Joe's replacement and whatever holes are still there, which I hope aren't a lot.

Just can't feel super positive right now.

Depends on what we are "contending" for. If its for a playoff spot, we're already there.

If its for a SB, then yes, probably at least a year or two away.

I look at it this way...

1. I don't see any team in our division, outside of maybe Cleveland, who has significantly upgraded their roster from the previous year. Pittsburgh did basically nothing in FA, and while they made some draft picks I liked, I still think their defense is a significant liability. Cincinnati is going to be a lot worse than people think they are, mostly because they're not very good defensively anymore and their Oline is atrocious. And while Cleveland is doing a lot of things I like, we obviously know they aren't contenders next season.

2. If you make the case that our offense is still bad, we at least on paper upgraded the defense, or particularly, upgraded the secondary. I can't see a version of this team being worse on defense this year than last year.

In theory I suppose we could be even worse on offense, but that's hard to see based on how badly we looked at times.

Not likely this season that the Ravens will be playoff team. Too many new players trying to gel together. I do see it next year with all the new talent from this season and an improvement on the offensive side. Remember we got a qb that can be like hot and cold running water. And that means that unless we replace him (not likely) the defense is going to have to be on their game most of the time...

Not really all that concerned about defensive players ability to gel together. Most of it is in the secondary anyway.

I certainly see an improved team from a year ago. If we don't make the playoffs, I think it'll either be because of a key injury (to somebody like Joe), or because other teams in the conference/division simply improved more than we did.

The first part of the offseason is the whole FO hitting FA and redoing contracts. Then Decosta had his draft. Now its Ozzies time.....

This is when Ozzie bargain hunts. if im not mistaken, this is when we landed the likes of Jacoby, doom, zuttah. This is when players get traded for dirt cheap because teams are rebuilding and drafted rookies replacing vets.

this is where we get gems for the right price. I like this team with decker and mangold if it only costs us giving up a 6th and releasing Watson.

Great post. I'm loving the offseason so far. We need a few more pieces and this team can compete. We don't even need game breakers. Just a few quality starters.

I know a lot of people won't want to hear this, but I just watched Cruz' highlights from just last year, I think the video was called rise, it's on youtube. He still looks pretty good imo. His legs look good. He didn't get a lot of separation when he was on the outside, but that's not his game. He was playing outside cuz Sterling was in the slot. He has also recently been saying he just wants to play. I'm sure he would Love to play for us. Though I'd rather have Q, I have a feeling he might not want to come back. Cruz would be cheap and be a nice chains mover from the slot. He would be a big jump ball red zone guy like we need, but he can still work the slot in the red zone. There aren't going to be a ton of quality options at this point, especially to add to the offense. But Cruz' legs looked good to me, and he looks to about as fiery as they come. Which would be another thing that just departed. Though he's not quite the physical bulldog that SSS and Q are, his heart looks to be just as big. I think it would be a great spark to add to our wr core, on and off the field

Cruz would surely be a welcomed addition in my opinion. Iv always been a big fan of his play. His injury history would scare me more than anything else at this point. I just feel like by the time he works some chemistry with Joe, he'll be injured again

I'm not too worried about that. It's the NFL, anyone can get hurt. Plus he only got hurt in 14', and sure it took him a long time to get back, but that's really the only injury of his career. I would bet anything he wants to go out with a bang. He still has some serious fire, desire, and game.
Going into the year with Cruz, Wallace, Perriman....would make me feel 10x better than if we didn't add anyone, which we might not. I would love for Camp to work that slot, but I think we all know Camp makes Jimmy Smith look like the ultimate iron man. We just simply need to add another piece or two if we're planning on beating NE in January. And I know there are some pessimists on here, or realists as they say, but I know we can.
I too love what we have done this offseason, I just wish we would've already added another wr or back. What can you do though. The defense is going to be nasty. Honestly I like Awuzie and Tabor better than Humphrey, and they went about a full round and a half later, but Marlon is now a Raven. And there's no denying he has potential. I just hate that word around here. At least he's walking into a perfect situation. Our first 2 picks are not 100% ready to start imo, which is kinda crazy, but they have potential. But so did AB and Elam. And to be honest, I was excited about Elam and AB when we drafted them. Bowser and Marlon could become bigtime players for us, but they're going to have to work incredibly hard to get there. Our 3rd round picks however, imo, are beautiful. Both ready to contribute right away. Chris can play anywhere on the line imo. Anywhere, while be effective from each spot. And we all know we're just going to put Timmy out there with one mission, GET THE QB.
I don't think there's any doubt we will be much better than last year, but if we want to go deep into January, and be playing in February, we need to add one or two offensive pieces imo. And they don't have to be big ones, at least contract wise. Not that we have a ton of money anyways. This is a pretty simple and basic approach, but I'm think we should cut Arrington and Watson. And sign Mangold and Cruz. I seriously believe that those 2 would upgrade our offense exponentially

Oh no don't get me wrong, Cruz or Q would surely make me feel better about this team but please excuse my greed. I'm hoping for something a bit better than just that.

I think your underestimating the value of Hump. He's a top ten talent and it shouldn't take him all season to become the starter. Carr was a great addition but hump can be a multiple pro bowler that can just take your best WR out of a game. He's even better! You don't get the opportunity to grab one of those guys without paying less than 10 mil a year so we're good.

Juju would have been nice but he's a steeler now and I hate him lol

When it comes to Bowser, I think he's the starter come September! Pass rush was a greater need as we have 2 good receivers but only one aging pass rusher that I still love but finally have to admit that his days are numbered.

Also, I don't think enough is said about Bowsers cover skills... He can really hang with anyone. And It makes me imagine a formation where Suggs and Williams rush from the outside. Judon from the inside and Bowser playing ILB with Mosley on obvious passing downs

Yeah, either way, I'm just glad we have 4 corners now instead of 2.
The silver lining that I'm trying to reason to myself about Ju Ju, and believe me, I have to fight hard to do so.....lol, is at least we have a CB that matches up perfectly against him- Mr. Jimmy.
I like your ILB idea about Bowser. Part time on any downs would work really. Cuz you're right Timmy, Sizzle, and even Judon will be coming off the edges a lot. Bowser will too, but watching that film, and with the basketball background, it definitely looks like he could turn into an absolute premier cover lb, with pass rushing skills too.
What do you think of this line up going up against a third and 12. This lineup doesn't even include CJ on the field.

Sizzle and Timmy Williams rushing from the edges With Wormley, Kufasi, and Willie Henry rushing from the inside.
TJ playing "lb" in the middle of the field
Weddle playing deep
Tavon, Jimmy, and Carr in (we'll see if Marlon takes Carr's spot. I have faith in Carr though. Esp. now that he's back to being a number 2)
Then just have Bowser walking back and forth down the line before the snap. Let him diagnose the play. Either hang in the middle to hold it down with TJ, watch for a back coming out of the backfield, or just go get the QB with the rest of the boys!
And that lineup is without Marlon, Judon, Webb, and Mosely on the field.....
SO much depth, talent, and versatility for our D.
Let's add a couple more to the O and I'll be counting down the days til September

did I mention that I really really like this D?!!

march 11 is when FAs don't count against comp picks any more. Looking forward to that date.

I think that would be impressive. I don't think we'd line up with 3 big guys on a third and 12 but take any of them out and put Mosley in lol

did I mention that I really really like this D?!!

march 11 is when FAs don't count against comp picks any more. Looking forward to that date.

March 11th? we're well past that. Did you mean May 11th?

You are mistaken, and that's the point.

Doom was a March acquisition, and so was Zuttah.

As I said earlier, the "bargain shopping" theory is nice and all, but it doesn't happen every year and it rarely lands a world-beater type player.

Yes, you can get somebody like Jacoby. He had one season of being a good kick returner and was integral in our SB win. After that, not much.

Daryl Smith is probably the best of those late acquisitions. A good player certainly, but that also doesn't happen every year. This is the time of year we usually sign maybe 1 key role player.

No one is calling for a game breaker. Key role players will do.

you forgot to mention that in most previous years we had no cap space to work with by this time. This year we do.

So are you saying there's no way we bring in Mangold and Decker and give up a 6th and release Watson? I think that's more than "not much" and I believe those two will do wonders to improving this offense

1. We've had cap space to work with the last few years. We've carried over around $4M + in the last few years. That's more than enough to sign a veteran player who's getting cut in the summer.

2. I fully expect us to bring in Mangold, but he's also a FA and has been for some time. The kinds of players you guys are talking about are cuts or trades from other teams.

I still think we release Watson. And I don't think we get Decker. It certainly won't be via trade, because he's due $7.5M this season.

If we get Decker, its IF he is cut, when we compete with many other teams who would want him.

Plus, if you're concerned about cap space, we only have about $4.5M of it right now. So how you plan on signing Mangold and Decker with that is going to be a stretch, even with a few more cuts.

Watson and whatever his face CB that's getting cut frees up 5 mil more. And we have 6 mil not 4

Source for the $6M?

Plus we don't know for sure that Watson is getting cut... we just assume that he is. We won't cut him unless we have somebody to sign with his money.

As far as I know, neither he nor Arrington is healthy enough to release at this point.

Really, we're doing this again? I don't have a source, I called Ozzie myself lol

and as far as I know, none of the rookies have been signed so your source is basically guessing if we're gonna play that game.  Point is we have cap space to sign 2 or maybe even 3 players. Hurst and Jensen can be let go of for another 3.2 million. Watson frees up 3 and Arrington frees up 2 that's 8 mil more than what we already have if the right players come along.

Yes, we're doing this again. Obviously not just going to trust some number that somebody on a fanboard throws out there. And you definitely don't need to know Ozzie to figure this out either... its readily available on the internet.

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/baltimore-ravens/cap/

That includes the draft pool.

I guess we could cut guys like Hurst or Jensen, but that's pretty unusual for this franchise to cut restricted FA tenders that we just handed out. Jensen in particular figures to very much be competing for a starting role.

I agree that we likely will ultimately cut guys like Watson and Arrington, though again, two major caveats here:

1. They have to be healthy enough to pass a physical. If they can't, you have to cut them with a settlement, which will eat into the dead cap space. We have no idea what that amount will be, or when we can even cut them without one. Watson's only about 7 months from a torn achilles and he's an older player... if it takes him 10 months or so to recovery, you can't even cut him without a settlement until close to the start of the season. At that point, his cap space is largely useless.

2. The rule of 51 means you won't get all of that cap savings. If you cut a player, another player moves up into the top 51. Current cutoff looks to be around $540K, so if cut both Arrington and Watson, you lose about $1-1.1M of that cap space.

Bottom line... the longer these guys are injured, the more difficult it becomes to cut them.

You know spotrac and over the cap are not always accurate right? They both had us above 10 mil before the draft and they don't get it right untill the PA releases official numbers.

back to the rule of 51, so if you release Areington and sign anyone alse for a million. Wouldn't you save a million in cap? Whoever it is that's 52 on that list goes back to 52 when you use that cap space lol so basically if you free up 2 mil then you actually have 2 mil more to spend ;)

and no it's not that uncommon to cut guys you just tendered. We just did that with a guy and would do it again if let's say mangold is signed 1.7 mil for proven backups is a steep price to pay. It's basically insurance

i honestly think Ozzie is not done with making moves. This offseason hasn't been like the past few and if we keep this momentum rolling then we can seriously compete

lasr but not least, I would hope Arrington clears wavers ASAP coz that would be such a waste. And Watson if I'm not mistaken is almost cleared

1. Yes, they're not always accurate. Except which players are you waiting on them to release numbers for? Most of the time the accuracy issues come from the fact that a player just signed recently and their contracts aren't public yet. Which player does that apply to in this case?

Short answer is at this time of the year, they basically are accurate.

2. Yes, actually it is uncommon. The guy we cut earlier this year was one of the first restricted tenders I recall us revoking in many years prior to the start of camp/preseason.

3. No, $1.7M isn't a lot to play for veteran insurance. The minimum salary for a 4-6 year veteran is like $800K anyway, so its about double the league minimum. That's not much. Its why so many teams covet the restricted FA tender

IF we were to sign somebody like Mangold, I highly doubt you'd see somebody like Jensen get cut, mostly because you're going to need reserve lineman and you have a lot of marginal players competing for those spots. If he gets cut in August/September, fine, because he got outplayed by his competition. Heck, that could happen to Mangold himself. But you're not cutting these guys in May.

4. I don't know if he's done making moves or not. I'm not a big Mangold fan, mostly because he hasn't been very good in a little while, so to me adding a guy like him isn't really making much of a move. I'd bring him in to compete for the job, not hand it to him.

Outside of them, maybe some depth signings here and there, but I don't see any difference makers being signed. I think we've got a lot of youth on this team, particularly on offense, and its time to find out if these guys can play.
