Welcome to Baltimore Chuck Clark

From Hensley:

Quote

With their final pick of the 2017 draft, the Ravens select Virginia Tech safety Chuck Clark in the sixth round. He's a physical, three-year starter in college who projects to be a special teams player in the NFL. Baltimore needed to add depth at safety behind Eric Weddle and Tony Jefferson.

As a fellow VT alum, welcome. Happy to have you on board.

Although Ford would've been a bit sexier, he should be able to contribute on ST as well I assume. Oh well, let's grab Boldin in FA - that'd be cool.

Not the first time the Ravens have taken an unknown defensive player, and it won't be the last. Sometimes these.guys become pretty good, so I'll wait and see what happen.

Like l said in the draft post, I used to coach Chuck Clark's Pop Warner football team, and I'm very close with is dad.  His dad was an Eagles fan until 30 mins ago.  I'm so proud and happy for the Clark family.

Definitely needed some more ST players. People don't realize the Ravens lost a lot of their best ST players- Juice, Huff and Elam (believe it or not) were two of the best ST players on the roster last year and they're gone. Clark has good field vision/tackling ability and seems like a perfect ST coverage guy. With Levine, Waller, Onwuasor, McClellan, Canady and now Clark- there's a solid group of ST players on the roster to aid with the last season's departures.

Did Hensley forget the Ravens have Webb as depth at safety as well?

From what I see, he's only expected to contribute through ST. I'd like to see him develop into a good successor to Weddle/Webb but being realistic, probably not.

Clark was one of the few guys that I didn't look into much at all, but we needed long-term S depth something bad, and it sounds like he should be a quality STer.  Not bad value in the 6th.

that's an incredibly good point id completely ignored - mclellan's still here, levine is still here but we also lost zach orr, juice, elam, and because of the depth at tight end there's no guarantee waller makes it this year either so while im not sure he was the BPA on offense/defense he may well have a larger effect on this team than any of the other guys we might have drafted - still disappointing but given the way the rest of the draft fell i can easily get behind him and say welcome to baltimore and hopefully we dont need him on the field on defence

we already hit our quota for cool names with tyus bowser - fish smithson would have caused overload

I mean... Isaiah ford for there for us to take. Talk about production, had like back to back 1000 yard season. This dude might be a good special teamer, but we could get those more in UDFA. I just don't get it

To be fair, I'm a little biased. I'm a Kansas alum. We only have so much we can get excited about with our football program. Now he's a Redskin. Doh!

Considering Ford didn't go until mid 7th, I think he was one of those players the nfl viewed very differently than the fans.

So what's the skinny on this guy?

Not super athletic, but high level instincts and football IQ. Always moving a step or 2 toward the play before it happens. Some ball skills.

Probably nothing more than a ST, but maybe could come on as a dime/nickel safety in 2-3 years.

Hard to find a whole lot on the guy in terms of tape... but seems like a decent floor/low ceiling type prospect who you feel confident you know exactly what youre going to get... thinking him becoming a Levine type player is close to the best we could hope for. Team guy, hard worker, ST standout that may eventually give you something in a niche role on defense.

His instincts and football intelligence seem to be the standout traits though.

Okay, gotcha. Thanks. Was hoping we got a guy that was more of a potential single high, but a sixth round pick for Anthony Levine isn't a bad deal.

I checked him out after we drafted him and I think he can function as a single high on occasion, but is more of a cover 2 guy.  Should be a good STer.  I saw a Haruki Nakamura athletic comp but with better tackling and IQ, and I don't think that's too far off.

Yea -- at least then he'd bring a skill set we dont currently have in any safety on the roster. But, nope... more of a combo guy like what we have.
