But defending in soccer is very similar to defending a pocket. Retreat a little early with one foot forward and one back for balance. But you dont retreat too much and have to be positioned just right so when they try to cut back inside you can cut that attempt off and keep your body positioned inside.

The footwork and body positioning is very similar. Staying low for leverage when making contact is key as well. The obvious difference is the amount of contact and the hand use.... but for that his wrestling ability is very useful. All about timing your shoot to land first, and controlling the guy across from you's body and weight... using their momentum against them, etc..

Both 1v1 defending, 2nd/3rd defender and team shape defending concepts probably surprisingly to some have a ton in common... coupled with wrestling seem like a darn good recipe for the base of an OL. Just very rare youd have a soccer player become the size of an OL.

to be fair just growing up around soccer and rugby have similar skills and in much the same way that US kids will understand some things fundamentally about defending etc. almost by osmosis it will be the same for him - it's funny because the way you talk about that wing-back type defending style in soccer is similar to team drift defense schemes in rugby - i guess there are just techniques and similarities between a lot of different sports that carry over - you're right though that the wrestling is almost certainly the biggest deal

Youre right, defending the wing positions in basketball is near identical in terms of concepts to defending in soccer. On ball defending very similar to 1v1 defending.

Never played rugby but considering the countries/cultures that seem to love and thrive at rugby also many cases love and do well at soccer -- i imagine youre spot on with there being many similarities in techniques and skills...

And i wasnt discrediting the impact rugby would have on a football player, hope it didnt come across that way. Just that i dont think his 1 year playing rugby (bc it was the closest organized sport to football in his town) would have developed much in him that would stick as a habit.

oh yeah no worries at all - i was just talking about in terms of rugby the idea that he would have been around the sport even if he hadnt been playing organised sport - maybe even playing it in school... (depending on his schooling)

Not very, I'm afraid. He only played it as a kid, switched to football after moving to US at the age 14.

He played soccer from 3-13 years old. Played Rugby at 13 for 1 year. Moved to the US at 14 and started playing football.

Hes now played football for 6 years compared to 1 of rugby. Neither is much experience. My point was simply that playing 1 year of rugby probably wasnt enough for him to learn and retain anything meaningful that would carry over to his football playing. Hes now got far more experience playing football, which itself isnt much.

He was from England, right? So one could technically say he's played "football" for almost his entire life. B)
