QB Roulette

2 posts in this topic

Given the lack of clear quality in this qb class, projections for their landing spots are all over the place. What prompted me to wonder about this now is that, with the retirement of tony romo the texans have zero options at qb apart from tom savage (but i doubt they wanna role with him through the season) - so you have to think they'll draft one of the top 4 guys with their first pick or risk losing out on all of them.

So far I've heard so many things that are contrary to what I assume I'm seeing on film - the most qbs I've ever been able to mock ahead of us is 2 and yet there are some analysts who think that mahomes (3rd or 4th on most analysts' rankings) will go before the 15th pick.

Teams rumoured to be potentially interested in taking a qb in round 1: browns, 49ers (unlikely this year), bears (unlikely this year), jets, bills (doug whaley obviously doesnt like tyrod), saints, browns again, cardinals, redskins, giants, texans, chiefs, steelers

now obviously some/most of these are unlikely landing spots but here are some media nuggets I've come across in some research around the media (sources are evading me at this time however):

- the jets and browns are both hot on trubisky but an AFC scout suggested that trubisky might not make it to the jets pick (for me this suggests a titans scout trying to bait the browns into trading up to the number 5 spot ahead of the jets and allowing the titans to pick up even more picks)

- an anonymous afc team with an established qb who has got them to the playoffs but not much farther (probably the chiefs given that the texans dont have enough qb consistency) is suggested to be enamoured with patrick mahomes but chad reuter has suggested that they might have to trade up into cardinals range to grab him (around the 13th pick - the suggestion here seems to be not that the cardinals are interested per se but that another team might make the pick around that spot - although i assume that must be by trade or something given that i dont see the eagles or colts being interested)

- deshaun watson has been invited to a 2 day visit with the jacksonville jaguars which could be ominous for the pick up of blake bortles 5th year option (id be surprised if the pick for the jags is qb given that doug marrone's pitch to ownership seemed to revolve around solving blake bortles rather than starting over)

- bruce arians appeared to intimate that the cardinals are particularly high on 1 qb - the only one they think could start as a rookie (reportedly leaked to a local beat writer as deshone kizer -- this to me suggests 2 things: either the cardinals are going to pull the trigger at 13 on a qb or they are hoping that another team trades up ahead of them/with them and snatches kizer instead to drop better options at other positions to them)

- bears are interested in taking a qb but not in the 1st round (again rumoured to be kizer)

so literally there is no consensus

sorry about the mishmash of info/unsourced rumours - i quickly put this all together mostly from memory... it's getting close to draft time and with romo retiring this felt suddenly like a really important question with yet another layer added to it... there's a hotbed of indecipherable rumours out there and i wondered how y'all feel about the qb situations and the likelihood of any qbs going ahead of the 16th pick...

I think a couple QBs could go before 16. I'd wouldn't be surprised if Trubisky and Watson went in the top 15 picks. I haven't really budged on Mahomes or Kizer, they both seem like Round 2-3 guys, but I think we could see a team trade back into the late 1st for one of them to get that 5th year option.
