[News] 2017 Draft Profile: DE Derek Barnett

17 posts in this topic

WELL ... Barnett has just become more of a real consideration bc we just traded Timmy Jernigan plus our # 99 overall pick for their # 74 overall pick.

IDK... I don't like it. I know that we were going to lose Timmy but If we would have moved up 25 spots and got an extra 5th rounder from them.. I would have felt good about it... but

Even we just let him play his contract out and lost him... we would have gotten a 4th round pick for him. So basically we traded a starter at 3rd round pick and a 4th round to move up 25 spots this year in the 3rd round?

what makes you think we would have gotten a 4th round pick for him? That's not a guarantee.

Nope you are right we could have got a 3rd.... I was just being conservative in making my point but your right.... we may have traded away a starter and two 3rd round picks for a higher 3rd round pick! SMH

Jernigan would have to sign a Top 5 Free Agent contract after next year - highly doubtful that his contract would be bigger than Cousins, Kam, Alshon, Lacy, Ezekiel, Edelman, Jimmy Graham, etc. etc. If he signed the same deal as BWill - it would probably only net a 4th or 5th rounder because of the other free agent contracts. My guess is its a 6th Round or not at all.....

A 3rd? LOL. It's more likely we would've received a 5th, or nothing than a 3rd.
This is another A+ move by the FO this offseason.

If Barnett somehow fell to us at #16, he's a no-brainer pick.  You can't dismiss his production over several years in the SEC.

Big fan of this kid. I've gotten to watch him quite a bit over the last two years living 2 hours from Knoxville TN and he has a nonstop motor and a passion for the game. He actually reminds me a lot of Sizzle when he was coming out of college. Both similarly sized, very productive college players who were/may get pushed down in the first round due to not being an "elite" talent athletically. If he is there at #16 I would love for him to be the newest Raven but I don't see him getting out of the top 12 or so really.

Barnett and Corey Davis at 16 would be Beautiful

Definitely agree if all the big names come off the board in the first 15 picks I take Barnett and then Davis. I think Mike Williams (WR) is gone by 12th pick. If these two are off the board try to drop back 3-6 spots and get an extra 2nd or 3rd pick. If we have to stay at #16 My next two would be Dalvin Cook (RB) and the best rated CB left.

I 100% agree with the guy. You are not getting a 3rd from Jernigan. He has struggled staying consistent and chances are you are looking at a 4th rounder at best and that would be in 2019. Also the move up from where we did is valued higher than a 4th round pick. I think it was a perfect move by the front office.

We are going to see the importance of trading Jernigan with having Picks 74 and 78. They can use them as 'Moving Up' leverage, for one scenario.
I think they keep those Picks and grab either 2 good O-Linemen or maybe sneak Sidney Jones in, if he is still available.
I'd be satisfied with Corey Davis, Mike Williams , Derek Barnett ,Taco Charlton or Haasan Reddick with #16. It's possible that none of those 5 are still available at #16.
Would they then go for an OL..... like Ryan Ramczyk or Garett Bolles ?
That is where that 78th Pick can come in to play . And if they Pick where they are ? They are still looking at getting 4 quality Players.

It was a good move by the FO for various reasons. Like you mentioned there's a risk of him getting hurt or suspended or maybe just play bad. But the guy was saying stuff like he'd have to play top 5 to land is a third. Hell no, 8-10 million a year lands you a third. If Jernigan plays a bit better than he did we'd be guaranteed a 3rd comp. did you see how many were given this year?

im on your side that it was smart to cash in on an asset and a third today is as good as second next year so long term it's a good move. But don't go as far as saying Jernigan was bad and he wasn't playing good or that he could only land us a sixth. And please don't agree with him when he claims its an A+ move short term when we all agree it's a long term move. No one we draft in the late third or fourth(that's the value we got for Jernigan) is expected to play as good as we'd expect Jernigan to play this year. And no one we sign in FA will play as big a role as Jernigan did for his 1 million salary.

I agree it was a good move and probably for the best interest of both the Ravens and Jernigan himself. But let's not fool ourselves here. This was a pill that we swallow to feel better in the future.

one last thing not mentioned. If we weren't going to land a good comp for Jernigan then it wouldn't be because of his play. It would be because we have a lot of cash to spend next year and we probably will spend more on FA than we lose. That's why I think it's a good move to get out of the comp formula in the first place as next year's FA will be a delight.

it was good. Perfect would be us landing a second round pick or trading Jernigan for Matthews. And shredding Jernigan to make yourselves feel better about the trade certainly doesn't go down well with me
