Ravens Prospect Visits Through the Years

34 posts in this topic

I made this thread last year, so I figured I'd update it for this year. It's mostly copy/paste, but I've updated it somewhat.

It's no secret that teams interview prospects for many different reasons, ranging from genuine interest to purposely feigning interest to trick other teams. In addition, teams will never meet or speak with certain prospects and then draft them, much to the surprise of the player himself. So this got me wondering: how strong of a connection is there between the Ravens' prospect interviews and actually drafting them? Taking what I could find from various sites, I composed a list, highlighting those we actually brought in either through the draft, UDFA, or waivers.

So what does this tell us? Well, we met with our eventual first round pick every year in which we had a first round pick in this sample size, so it seems like they don't purposely not interview the players they want in the first. After the first though... it seems like a crap-shoot. We interview around 25 prospects for every 1 we actually draft. Most of the players we draft each year after the first round are never even interviewed, at least according to what we know from these databases. Of our second round picks over this stretch, we only interviewed Torrey Smith.

What I wish I had consistent in all of this data is when/where we are meeting these prospects. A meeting in private might be weighted more heavily than a meeting at the EW Shrine Game, for example.

Another thing we will never know is just how much the Ravens actually coveted a player they didn't even have a chance to draft. For example, the Ravens never actually interviewed Khalil Mack, but they attempted to trade up from 17 to get him. They interviewed and really coveted Marcus Peters, but they never had the chance to draft him. And they twice met with and then tried to trade up for Jalen Ramsey, but Jerry Jones thought we actually wanted Elliott for some reason, so that never happened. Needless to say, it's hard to know who they really want in a given year.

Anyway, this list is nostalgic if nothing else.

I'm starting to think we might be very interested in taking chris wormley with our second round pick. He seems like an Ozzie type player and has that harbaugh connection, meeting with him multiple times also shows interest

Meetings are a crapshoot and I think the above shows you can't glean too much from them. Even though the above shows that we met with every 1st rounder, you still see guys like Elam are combine interviews and such a low percentage of those meetings are actually reported.

I actually think it's easier to look into the late round guys that have private visits, especially at positions in which we have a coach that typically has a developmental pet project.

I remember Paxton Lynch visited last year. Thought that was weird.

Sometimes visits are to see what other teams have interest in case a trade back opportunity presents itself. Find which teams are most interested and wage a bidding war.

Its really a mucking up process. A lot of these players the Ravens have no interest in but of course some there are. You just want to keep your interests covered. Right now its full out "lying season".

I'd be thrilled if the Ravens landed Josh Jones. We'd need to get a bit creative when figuring out how to use three high caliber safeties, but he has the potential to be incredible in the NFL.

Definitely agree with the second part. I remember Castillo working out Myers, as an example. Pretty sure they also worked out Gradkowski. (neither of those two turned out very well for us either lol)

In the end, these meetings (the ones that are known) only have the value that you assign them. I guess my only real takeaway is that, if the Ravens haven't met a given first-round prospect whatsoever, then the likelihood of us drafting them decreases to a degree.

Awesome job updating this. I was just about to say we had a private meeting with Tim Williams. Probably just Ozzie saying hi to his Alabama buddy lol

Well if the trend of having met with our 1st round pick continues... kinda narrows down for us, at least thus far. I'm sure a few more visits are likely to happen, but as of now the trend suggests we're taking one of:

Taco Charlton

Takk McKinley

Tim Williams

Haason Reddick

Mike Williams

John Ross

Zach Cunningham

Caleb Brantley

Pat Mahomes

At least in terms of the guys frequently mocked in the 1st. From there we can probably narrow it a bit further.

I imagine this list will have a couple OL and CB added to it before all is said and done to add to the intrigue.

Not to mention we'll find out later about unreported combine meetings that took place at the hotel, and other more informal things like that which technically constitute meeting with a player.

No Derek Barnett. Im getting the feeling that we are leaning toward Takkarist or Ross.

Theres also the very real possibility that we've met with several guys but its gone unreported... informal meetings with guys at combines, pro days, Sr bowl, EW shrine, etc...

Plus we still have more formal visits available.

Not only that, im sure theres certain guys we're 100% on in our evaluations from tape. A guy like Mack who were ready to trade a kings ransom for to move up and get, i dont believe we ever had a reported meeting with.

Barnett is a guy who is polished and its obvious on tape, has the production, and by all accounts in an extremely hard working and likeable guy off the field. If they feel confident in that evaluation and his placement on their board, no need to waste a meeting or put people onto the scent.

Decosta did say a lot of visits are smoke screens and that some player visits that have been reported were never true to begin with.

Not surprising, when we do the pick the picks game later this month Robinson is definitely going to be on my list.

I've updated it based on what walterfootball has reported, but if there's anyone else you think should be on the list, let me know.

One name I like seeing is Kpassagnon. I loved what I saw out of him at the Senior Bowl. We really need to come away from this draft with a 5-tech, someone to compete with Kaufusi and Urban, and he possesses a lot of upside. Plus he seems kind of like a typical Raven pick as someone from a smaller school.

Of those players theres only two I want in the first M.Williams and Hasson reddick. I'd be a tad meh about Tim Williams and McKinely..would prefer to trade down for them. John Ross isn't breshad perriman ( ie he isn't crap) but i worry about his injury history. Caleb brantley would be a meh pick. solid floor but low ceiling, in the 2nd round wouldnt be bad though. Same with taco charlton.I would love zach cunningham in the 2nd though. I think he's great in coverage and has great instincts.

I think fans forget about the smokescreens teams throw out. The team only met with Correa once before drafting him and it wasn't reported because it was at the senior bowl I think. It wouldn't surprise me if they met with these players and don't want it to be on record in fear of a team jumping in front to take that player.

Yep.  So many go unreported, and sometimes, you can meet a player once and know you're good.  Often times, top 30 visits are reserved for guys you have questions about or guys you want to make believe there's strong interest.  If a prospect is considered "safe" then a smart team isn't going to tip their hand.

I also think teams meet with players they know they are not interested in just to psych other teams out. That avoids predictability.

Christian McCaffrey has received a draft guarantee from a team presently selecting in the teens, according to reports from various media outlets.

Might apply here lol.

Might be us, Philly or Indianapolis. Maybe Washington as well.

Thinking Corey Davis will be the pick unless he's gone then we trade down. Are 2 day visits rare?

I'm just going through some pro day stuff from the guys we've met with on this list and Keion Adams had a pretty impressive day

Height: 6’ 2”

Weight: 247 pounds

Hand: 9.5 inches

Wingspan: 78.25 inches

Bench press: 27 x 225 pounds - One of the knocks on him is that he lacks strength, 27 reps is great for him

Vertical jump: 36 inches

Broad jump: 10 feet, 4 inches

40 time: 4.68 seconds

Short 20 shuttle: 4.35 seconds

60 yard shuttle: 11.12 seconds - would have been the best at the combine

Pretty great numbers for a mid/late round prospect, tape shows some solid bend and great quickness. Isn't really one to string pass rush moves together though. I wouldn't be mad if we grabbed this guy with our 5th or 6th.

You're right about that. And this year some that flashed for me are Malik Golden and that young corner form Miami Corn Elder. Both seems like typicalRavens pick. Golden is a Special Teams Ace in the NFL in my mind and could earn a way playing the Dime and Elder would be the Tavon Young type of pick. I'm not as high on Elder as I was on Young in term of ball skills but both players are fierce and undersized sure tacklers.

Pretty great numbers for a mid/late round prospect, tape shows some solid bend and great quickness. Isn't really one to string pass rush moves together though. I wouldn't be mad if we grabbed this guy with our 5th or 6th.

He strikes me as a guy the Ravens would like as well. He met with each team in our division and worked out privately with the Steelers.

Could be a bit of a sleeper pick taken way earlier than we suppose.
