We have our normal 3rd round pick currently. If he walks in FA, we could get a 3rd round comp pick, which would be late in the round.

If we instead trade him, we would pick up another 3rd, but we would lose the ability to get that comp pick. So all we did was move up some spots.

If we did the deal with somebody who ends up picking in the back half or end of the 3rd round (a contending team), then we would be trading Jernigan one year early and basically just getting a draft pick that's maybe like 5-10 spots better in the 3rd round.

If it were in the first round, I'd see the value. In the 3rd, I don't.

I agree 100 percent as I wouldn't trade Jernigan for anything less than a second. And no one is giving up more than a 3rd for him. So let's at least have him for a good year and see what happens then.

It scares me that our FO probably looks at it another way.

A third this year is as good as a second next year if we flip it. A second next year is as good as a late first the year after that.(That's when we cash in on Jernigans comp if we get one)

1- a third this year or even a 4th is much more valuable than a 3rd comp 3 drafts away.

2- there's always a chance that a player gets hurt or suspended and crushes his value in FA where our beloved comp turns into a 4th or worse.

3- looking at next year's FA, if Jernigan is out of the picture then there really isn't anyone that could yield us a third round comp. That basically means walking into FA with no limitations other than the salary cap. Imagine walking into FA with 30 millionish to spend and no comp to protect. Ozzie is probably drooling already at that thought.

im on your side of the boat regarding Jernigans situation. I'd hate it if we trade him away for a third or fourth but I wouldn't be completely surprised if Ozzie pulls the trigger. It's simple risk vs reward. Call it being conservative and I hate it but it's definitely logical.
