Post Free Agency draft

13 posts in this topic

Well, we got some big signings during the first few days of free agency so that changes a bit of the draft strategy. Here's another go at it.

Round 1: Corey Davis, WR, WMU

B9325041223Z.1_20161201000354_000_GLCGJM

Sticking with Davis as the top pick. He's just too good of a fit and too good of a player to pass up if he's at 16. One thing that I didn't mention before, but we saw that Flacco is great at throwing those intermediary passes when he's got chemistry with a guy he trusts (Boldin and Pitta being the prime examples). That's why Corey Davis could be the perfect WR to pair Flacco with. And he's the perfect complimentary WR to Perriman. If the safeties back off to deal with Perriman, Davis will abuse the underneath coverage.

Round 2: Derek Rivers, edge, Youngstown State

Small school guy that dominated at his level. He seemed to only get better when under the spotlight at the Senior Bowl, Combine, and Pro Day. He has every trait you could want from an edge rusher: quickness, athleticism, a good bend, decent strength, and combines it all with a relentless play style. And his ceiling is really high, meaning he'll keep getting better while learning from guys like Mosley, Suggs, and Weddle. On top of that, the Steelers seem to have taken a liking to him. One more chance to grab a high player off their board.

Round 3: Isaac Asiata, interior O-line, Utah

Moving him up since its kinda wishful thinking that he'll still be there for the comp pick. He could even be gone by this point. That aside, he has the traits to become a good center and is the perfect guy to push nose tackles off the line of scrimmage. Hell, he'd probably have the time of his life going toe to toe with nose tackles. If he doesn't work out at center, then we still get someone that can play nearly at KO's level at guard.

Round 3 (comp): Howard Wilson, CB, Houston

To put it simply, he came out of college a year sooner than he should have. He has pretty limited experience. However, he has all the natural traits you want at CB. Fluid hips, plays without fear, good speed, great length, and good instincts. All he needs is experience. Since the Ravens got Carr, we don't need to throw a young CB into the fire. After a year learning from Weddle and spending time in an NFL weight room, he could become one of the great hidden gems of this deep DB class.

Round 4: Brad Seaton, OT, Villanova

Seaton is a big, big man who is pretty good at imposing his will on edge rushers. Unlike a lot of massive tackles at the college level, he actually has pretty good lateral quickness to go along with his size and strength. Does he need a bit of polishing? Sure. But after the initial growing pains he could become a very good RT and swing tackle in the NFL. In the long run, he could be an upgrade over Wagner. He's also one of the few college tackles with his own highlight video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iu6FDBZKXNU

Round 5: Elijah Lee, LB, Kansas State

A sideline to sideline defender that is also a good blitzer, and has some upside in coverage. His ability to find and get after the ball carrier through traffic can make him a great special teamer right away. Plus he'll provide Correa some real competition for the ILB spot, and be a competent backup.

Round 6: TJ Logan, RB/Return specialist, UNC

Logan is a speed demon through and through with the ability to take it to the endzone anytime he has the ball in his hands. Could be a very good returner in the NFL.

This is a good mock. Need to check out Seaton, but sounds like a good pick.

Your draft certainly has plenty of potential. The problem I see is that only Corey Davis and possibly Isaac Asaita will be able to offer meaningful contributions in the 2017 season. By 2019 several of these players could be mainstays in our lineup.

im a fan of davis, asiata (although im still not sure id want him with the first pick in the 3rd but you're probably right he wont be there for the comp pick), howard wilson and i think the tj logan and elijah lee pickups are fine for what they are

derek rivers is a good player but will be lucky to get picked day 2 so picking him in the 2nd round is an enormous reach for a developmental prospect like that - at this point id take him in the 4th probably but not much higher (maybe the 3rd comp pick but that's as high as ill go at the moment) - if we could pick him up later in the draft id be pleased but in the 2nd when there are so many potential day 1 impact starters at many positions (including edge rusher) id be livid if derek rivers was the 2nd rounder

brad seaton has huge size and will dominate slower edge rushers but watching him on film does not persuade me that he has the lateral quickness you suggested he had or the ability to hang with nfl ends and outside backers - he has an awful kickstep, is really slow out of his stance and takes his time getting to the defender... now ill be fair and say that when he gets his hands on defenders he can put them in the ground and he finishes blocks well but at the next level he'll have to get hands on before he can use his size which i think he'll struggle with

I would consider the offseason unsuccessful, not a failure, of we don't draft an Offensive playmaker. Davis is gonna be a superstar. I like Ross as well Zay Jones who would be perfect for our offense.

One of the problems I have is that it is necessary for me to offer limited observations on many of these players as you have selected guys with limited available film, at least that I've been able to find thus far. In any case, here goes.

1) Davis will be the best receiver the ravens have ever drafted. Like the player and the pick....has potential to be star. Reminds me of Terrell Owens after the catch.

2) feels like a need pick and too early. I can see where you're coming from....assuming he won't be there round three and filling a need. I'm not sure I like him down to down in the film I've watched. He's sometimes quick off the ball when rushing, sometimes not.

I don't like him as much as Judon coming out and you better believe Harbaugh makes him prove himself on teams, ....in other words, I doubt he sees defensive snaps this year. A year from now, he could very well be something.....

3) I do like both Asiata and Wilson. To this point in your mock, Davis and Asiata , I believe would be starters and I'm convince Wilson will be a good corner for us. I love how he plays both the run and the ball.

4) feels like a checklist pick to me....could be wrong about that but I'm going corner here.

5) Elijah Lee is an example of a player I dismissed too quickly. I've only seen vs. Stanford but if he plays that way consistently, we have a gem. Fast to diagnose and pursue...has some pop in taking on blocks...good open field tackler....sometimes tackles too high but gets the guy down.

Doesn't hesitate to make decisions and fire his gun. Athletic guy in coverage...sticks his man but needs to get better at finding the ball and reading receiver. I like the player and great value.

I to me, this mock lands three...perhaps four starters but misses something in rounds two and four. I'm finding it difficult to project an edge player in round two without a sort of slide......

I like this generally with a few tweaks.

i imagine a slide would be required too but i dont see it as unlikely that maybe a guy like ryan anderson could fall to 47...

Ryan Anderson is the guy I'm seeing as well.

Also giving a good look at Willis as a possibility.

Agreed. He posted awesome combine numbers, but his film isn't that impressive

A lot of people, or draft analysts, love to focus too much on ceiling. Rather than just watching the tape and seeing what they are and what they bring to the table, they try to project what they can become. This often leads to a player getting overdrafted and becoming a bust. Just look for the kids who can play ball, and not so much the hype.
