[News] Ravens Reach Four-Year Agreement With Cornerback Brandon Carr

You have got to be kidding. I watched last year's cowboys games in condensed version last night on NFL mobile and it's hard to rack up stats when no one throws at you. How many interceptions does J Smith have in his career. Very few because you can't catch what's throw to the other side of the field.

The Cowboys have zero cap room that's why they lost their WHOLE secondary from safeties to Claibourne going to the Jets and Carr coming here. They spent their dollars on the offensive line, now if you argue that's what we should do, you have a leg to stand on, but he is a solid, press, corner who is a great fit opposite J Smith. People forget the salary cap has increased astronomically in the last 4 years and a 6 mil contract is a lot less of the total percentage of total cap space, considerably, since 2012.

It looks like the Ravens are getting back to defense first, second and third and if the offense can get 16 points in a game, then we can win. How many times did we cry about the offense scoring and taking the lead in the fourth quarter and the defense giving up a winning score in the last minute of the game. I remember the "Immaculate Stretch" by Brown that kept us out of the playoffs. Maybe bend don't break is an obsolete strategy. Bend not break is for losers, winners say your not getting a yard.

Lmao not thrown at???? My goodness man I'm not gonna argue. The team stats don't lie, Dallas as a team and Carr has been one of the worst secondarys in the nfl for yrs. Once he left K.C he has sucked and that has been proven. 2015 he ranked 73rd in the league giving up a Passer rating of 117. Oh yea those are shutdown stats, you can put lipstick on a pig as the old cliché goes, guess what, it's still a filthy animal.

He's not getting paid like a shutdown corner. So where's the issue?

There is much more to these signings than some of you realize. Lets start with why some cowboys fans were frustrated with Carr. He signed a 5 year 50 million dollar contract with 26 million guaranteed. You expect that player to be your #1 CB. Lucky for us he will be our #2 and Jimmy will cover the Antonio Browns of the world. He also signed with us for 4 years at 24 million with only 12 million guaranteed. Basically a prove it every year contract that is about as team friendly as you can get. So half the money and almost no risk. Unbelievable job by ozzie. It wasnt how carr played that upset cowboys fans. It was how he played when compared to their expectations. For those who are disappointed we didn't sign Claibourne, I understand. He has the potential to be a shut down corner but can you imagine if Jimmy and Claibourne were to both get injured at the same time. It would be a disaster and had a very good probability of happening at some point over the coming years. I am very excited to have Carr on our team and think he will give us some consistency. Something we have been lacking.

Jimmy doesn't cover Brown that often. Brown lines up all over the formation, and when he's in the slot, Jimmy rarely follows.

In fact, I would bet that if you went back and watched film, the Ravens rarely go man-to-man on Brown, and probably have 2-3 guys playing bracket coverage most of the time.

Overall, Ravens have done a great job in the past of covering Brown, especially compared to how other teams have fared.

Exactly. Nicely said ByThe Bay.
And we can "opt out" of the contract after the first or second year
And he will look so much better playing on our D as opposed to the Cowboys.
Some people are acting like we just paid 15 mil a year for our new #1 or something. And they don't seem to realize it's only a 4 year or even 3 year, if we want it to be.
Not to mention Claiborne, missed more career games than he's played........NO thanks. Esp with Jimmy's history and I think he cost more than Carr.
Great job FO

This was a good move, because now we aren't forced to draft Marlon Humphrey in the first round instead of Sidney Jones. This means we can go for a top-notch edge rusher and WR in the 1st two rounds and fill two really big holes. McCaffrey or Cook might drop to us as well. Both are great receivers as well as runners.

No we aren't kidding nor complaining just stating facts that are readily available to anyone who chooses to look. I mean let's face it, when has Dallas had a great passing defense? I'll wait...when have you ever heard Carr's name thrown out as a top notch, elite or "good" CB? I'll wait! We are steadily taking on other teams washed up, has been DB's and it's annoying. I watch lots of football as I'm sure most fans here do as well...Carr at best is a "decent" CB worth a tryout, not a 4 yr possible deal.

Alright RaRaRavens, bare with me as a long response is coming. And that's cuz I'm stoked on what we're doing, the two of us have pretty much seen eye to eye on everything since the end of the season, and I'm at work and have plenty of time.
In general it seems like most teams are always going to be better on one side of the ball naturally. And there are always holes to fill on teams somewhere. Having said that, I'm extremely glad we seem to be going heavy defensively again. But, I don't think our offense has as many "holes" as people think.
I think our biggest problems on Offense last year were the 2 most important things. The qb and coaching. We're bringing back the same coaching......I couldn't make much sense of that, but it is what it is. And I honestly think Joe will have a bounce back year for a few reasons, his knee being a big one. But most importantly he has to want to, or else...well, yeah.
But aside from those 2 things, I don't think the positions to fill are that bad. We have talent. We need 2 lineman. A center and a RT or LG depending on where we're gonna play Lewis. Those aren't positions that necessarily require high picks or big contracts. And Jensen could be a guy to earn the Center or LG spot. Also, while we need to fill those 2 spots, it's not like we have bums at the other 3 spots either. 2 Mega studs and then a lot of people like Lewis. While we need to fill those 2 spots, if they are filled correctly, our line will be beastly and set for a while. There are still FAs and cuts too.
Then we need a possession wr and red zone target. I think Perriman will take a big step forward this year, and Wallace and Moore can ball if they're complemented correctly. I'm really liking Ju Ju Smith in the second. I think that would be perfect. But I also think we can get away with a wr in rounds 3-5, if we chose well. Which we don't typically do with wideouts. Bound to hit eventually though.
That only leaves the painful gap created by Dixon's suspension to finish off the Offense imo. I really don't think we need to take a rb high this year, at all. I think we'll be fine there. I would love it though if Charles is healthy though and signed a one year deal. He wouldn't have to carry the load at all and would be a great addition. Even at 90%.
While that leaves a solid 3-5 picks for Offense. I think those can all be done with our 4 picks between the 2nd and 4th........( Sleeper Pick...Corey Davis in the 1rst!!!) that would be super interesting!
Also, I think the offensive FA Market was ugly this year. I'm glad we didn't waste money there, or sign a Garcon, Woods, or Britt. Especially while expecting them to be number ones.

Now, the defense...it really is starting to get back to Raven Defense. This season is going to be fun because of it alone regardless of finishing place or anything.
With good reason, I don't think the average fan understands what's going to happen once we not only add Jefferson to the Defense, but pair him with Weddle. I live in CA and have seen Jefferson jump off the screen in Cards games for years now..always wondering who he was. Even so, I still kinda missed on him in FA this year, kinda cuz I thought he was going to get a bit more money. But after studying a bit, this guy checks every box and then some. Seriously, I don't know how many football players I've seen that are as versatile as he is. He can cover, amazing tackler and physical, and he can blitz like a LB. And even though he'll be around the line most of the time, at times we'll see if he can play Center field as well. He's a leader and locker room guy too. A++ to the FO for that pick up.
BWill......sweeet! didn't see that coming. Appears he didn't really have a big market. Plus I'm glad we weren't scared off by an extra mil or two per year. Our run defense is set for years now and that's where it all starts.
Carr- awesome pick up. I seriously Cannot believe seeing these fans posts that wanted Claiborne. I think I would've had to start taking MMA classes just to let out steam if we signed Claiborne lol. Carr is a stud. He was a stud in KC for a reason...people will see. SO much more flexibility going into the draft now. Not to mention our secondary is set for years now, and easily top 5 imo. Easily. Mr Tavon Young now = the best slot corner in the game imo. All 3 corners are different sizes too.
I'm not worried about MLB what so ever. Signing Brown would be amazing though. I also think we'll take a pass rusher in rounds one or 2. ( Harris, Taco, Lawson, and Barnett look good to me. I wouldn't touch Williams, even in the 2nd). Depending on how we finish this offseason, I think our D is poised to set records.

Sorry about the rant but I'm excited about the way things are looking. I could go on and on. I think the offensive holes can be filled before round 5. Our D just needs a finishing touch or two. I think it is going to be substantially better than last year, without doubt.
Let me know what you think....lol. I only post when I'm at work and have time to kill. I love my birds though. I've lived in CA my whole life and hope to make it to a game in Baltimore someday. The stadium seems like an awesome environment!

Some very nice and thorough thoughts, pleasant to read! And wow did you get me pumped up for 2017! lol

All in all I think you might be right. I do not share your big optimism regarding C or WR position however. I really don't see Jensen being able to handle C, let alone be an upgrade to Zuttah, who was mediocre. I've never been a huge fan of Jensen as a player, but who knows, maybe he will be the next player who comes into his own in his last year and plays himself out of our price range at LG. I sure hope so, that would allow us to move Lewis to RT and we'd only need a C and some depth to finish up the O-line. Still, don't think Jensen will be good enough of a starter.

As to WR, I was disappointed that we did not sign any of the vets out there when I saw how little they got paid. 5M for relatively sure pickups in either Marshall or Garcon would have gone a long way for us. Now, whatever we do it will be a huge question mark until we play a significant game come September. We might be off great with inhouse talents and drafted additions, but considering our history of drafting underachieving WRs and bad luck with injuries at the position, I don't see our WR core being in a great shape. Definitely not good enough to carry us deep into the playoffs, if it should come to that. Marty must get mighty creative with his weapons and Flacco must find a way to play well enough to help out his inexperienced WRs, something he has never been able to do.

But with the rest of it I agree, especially regarding defense. Gotta give it to Oz and the rest of the FO, they've pieced together the perfect FAs on defense that fir perfectly to what we're trying to do on defense. Now a disrupting pass rusher and a starter at MLB and we're set. Everything on from there will be just quality depth.

lol, same here. Mostly post from work on slower days. I'm following the best team in NFL from the other end of the globe, though. Making it to a Ravens game would be awesome! Bummed that I can't make it to the Ravens game in UK, but one day...

The issue is throwing money at a guy that doesn't deserve it. Waste of a roster spot, the monetary value doesn't have anything to do with my statement about his performance!

LOL, there's 53 roster spots and a lot of them will be spent on guys who won't contribute beyond special teams.

If you're grand plan was to draft 2-3 corners in this draft and think they're going to come in right away and contribute, your expectations are unfounded.

This was always going to be a mix of FA corners (of which there isn't a ton) and rookies via the draft.

Seems more like an expectation problem on the fans part.

This is a dependable good corner and our defense just got better. In the draft, pick up Mike Williams in the first round to be a play maker which will compliment our current WR's.  Pick up a edge rusher in the 2nd round to help our pass rush.  Pick up Will Likeley, JR in the third round as a competent potentially great corner back and returner and then pick up some linemen in the 4th and 5th round to help our offensive line depth.

I know some people might disagree but we need explosive play makers in the draft and depth.  Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!  Today I drink for Ireland! LOL!

It's a shame too because the people in charge of PR are probably the type of people that are absorbed by their phones and twitter, facebook, ect and think everyone else must be too. A large amount of fans on the forums here are from out of state and even out of country. They will be hurt the most from this. Local fans are engulfed in Ravens fandom. This whole area turns purple every fall. It's enough to make a steelers fan nervous just walking into a dunkin donuts! I hear the team say they want to expand ravens nation but this move may do the opposite. It's a shame.

My god man! I try to make a point that the Carr signing is a good thing and you just zero in on one little insignificant example and you just pounce. I could have used any wr as an example. My point is that Jimmy will typically cover the #1 receiver so there is less pressure on Carr.

Well its not really an insignificant detail, because it doesn't take into account our gameplan or what kind of team we are.

Whether or not Jimmy covers the #1 WR or not depends on whether we're even playing man coverage, whether that WR is an outside vs slot receiver, etc.

Take into account also the fact that Jimmy doesn't play full seasons that often, and Carr is going to have plenty of pressure on him.

Could argue both sides of this.

I mean it costs money to operate these forums, and I don't exactly see a significant revenue source to offset those costs do you?

I mean its not like anybody is going to stop watching the team because they shut down the forum on the teams website, especially when there's dozens of other forums they can go to.

I'm not happy with it either, but I can certainly see why it happened.

That's true and it is something but the fan lead forums seem to be where the most knowledgeable fans congregate. To be clear, while I do find you arrogant and judgmental there is no denying you are extremely knowledgeable about most things football, including cap and contract discussions. It's annoying to be constantly corrected but you do provide a rational voice in a topic that can be extremely subjective. Now go ahead, let me know why that is wrong. :)

No its just Facts. Your definition of complaining is questionable. I don't worship everything Ozzie does. Ozzie brings in a guy and he's the best thing since slice bread .. then their gone. Its called be objective. Ravens lost a RT, Center, and Linebacker where the focus?

There's a reason this guy was a Stud in KC. He was surrounded by talent and wasn't counted on to be the number 1 CB. Just like here. And here is a stud. Great addition. I'm starting to get so stoked about the D I don't even care about the Offense lol

B Carr is solid  , he is a GIANT upgrade to , Wright, Arrington, or whomever we have tried at CB opposite Jimmy Smith,  (not including Tavon he is more of a true nickel) all the Debbie downers you don't know what your talking about... Look at his stats from KC , pretty good pickup OZ

Bruh if you think this was a good move, your expectations of this teams performance must be seriously low. You get what you pay for! And in reality my "grand plan" wouldn't matter considering I'm a fan/spectator just as you are! I'm no guru or know it all but, I have seen many DB's come out of college and outperform tons of vets so, it's not out of the question to draft a corner that can be a plug and play guy. Tayvon being one. Bottom line is, I feel that Carr is not worth a dime, nothing you or anyone here can say to change that!

Shame-Yea some of us have fun on here but others take it way too serious. They think its their purpose in life to correct everyone's comments and then throw insults. I believe they are or want to be coaches with no social skills. It would have been nice if they would explain somethings without throwing their little childish remarks into the reply's.

It figures that the children who run this site can't take criticism. Anyone who disagrees with the ramblings of their writers is labeled a troublemaker. No bad words, heavens no. I respect others opinions and enjoy reading their views. It is ok to have a different opinion, but personal attacks are the weapons of the unintelligent and shouldn't be tolerated. Factual presentations, even if somewhat off color, should be ok among adults. Not here though. A teal shame because some of the posters make a lot more sense than those who call themselves columnists.

Don't forget the secondary lost Coach Frazier. He is a big time loss than what most people think. The new faces need to get used to the playbook so we can't really expect much their first year. Unless Mr. Weddle takes over and teach them the ropes to Ravens football which he did almost perfectly with the season he had. Offense still needs playmakers though. We have the players (Wallace, Waller, Dixon, West, Boyle, Maxx, Pitta, etc) to do damage offensively, but we lack a creative offensive coordinator. We lost Steve Smith too which isn't gonna help. Offense still lacks an identity and needs a leader ASAP! Defensive Coordinator isn't creative either. Truth be told, he's not what this team needs. We need an aggressive play caller and since Chucky P, we have not had one.

Did some research on these boards back when we signed Both Arrington and K Lewis.  A lot of people on these boards were excited back then too, especially with Arrington.  Not trying to bad mouth signing Carr, but I for one will have a wait and see perspective.

I think you need to take context into account on this though.

When we signed Arrington, he was strictly as a slot corner who was supposed to cover inside with Webb and Jimmy on the outside. He also spent much of his time here injured, obviously missing all of 2016.

Would also added that we signed him to a 3 year deal worth $7M total, which means he's less than a $3M a year player. That's not exactly giving him a big chunk of change, or viewing him as a key player.

Lewis also didn't sign for that much, and was actually a decent starter on prior teams (KC and Houston). Not a stud player by any stretch, and not sure he was ever really signed to be a starter either.

I agree with the premise that we typically think most FAs we sign our studs, and these two turned out not to be, but its important to consider context and cost in this.

Its possible we will hear in a year that somebody like a Danny Woodhead was a bad signing because his role wasn't big enough, but again, when you factor in cost and how we committed to him, its not really much.

No different than giving somebody like Ben Watson a cheap, 2 year contract. If it works out, its a bargain. If it doesn't, you move on quickly without substantial cap impact.

Not every FA we sign as a world of expectations when they come in. Given that we gave Carr $6M a year, I would say expectations are obviously higher than Arrington, but also the structure of the deal dictates that we aren't extremely confident in him, and could move on quickly if things deteriorate. Jefferson and Williams are the only two signings I've seen so far that we are actually committed to for at least 3 years.
